hey guys, figured i would post a thread about Season 3's possibility's...

GM Connected, new online franchise mode from the NHL Dev team. where we can play vs other human users and cpu controlled teams. the mode also is going to have an iphone type app to stay connected on the go, so ya have to figure that means we will have an EA Website like NCAA and Madden do. sweet!!

this gives us some options that we never really had before. sure EA had the online league feature, but it was horrible. if owner x played 15 games, then was removed for whatever reason. all 15 of those games got reset as if they were never played. as of now, my thinking this wont be the case with GM Connected.

now, im just guessing here, but we could have 3 options as a league schedule wise using the above mode. a 29, 41, and 82 game season.

usually, in the leagues i have run in the past, we would have a 40 to 44 game schedule. all obviously user vs user games!! we would have anywhere between 22-30 owners per season. a few seasons with a full 30 team league. IMO 41 games would be enough to get involved in the season and then let us run another right after.

with that said, here in the THL we have a solid core of 12 guys. i would like to thank everyone for getting the NHL kick started here with these first 2 seasons.

i figure we will have the usual 6 guys or so sign up bc the game is new and they want to play from here, maybe more. i then figure to add about 6 to 10 guys that have played in all my past seasons elsewhere. most havent signed up here just yet, just waiting for the new game to get closer to release.

from the looks of it, it shouldn't be an issue getting 30 owners all signed up and ready to roll. but, we wont be using 30 owners. with this league still fairly new, regardless of using the GM Connected or using a set up like we have now, 22-24 owners probably would be the perfect fit.

if need be, we can set up a small minor league type set up, for guys that are interested in playing in the THL, to prove themselves, or just to keep them playing until someone is removed for whatever reason. we can cross this bridge if we ever get to it though.

trading will now be an option as well. we would definitely need some trade rules in place bc EA's trade logic never seems to be updated. here is what was used in an NHL 2K League i was involved with in the past.

    --
Trading: Only five [5] players can be traded. So, if you make a 3-for-3 trade, you can only trade 2 more players. Also, you can only trade one [1] player rated 90 or above. When trading, the overall rating differential of the players involved cannot exceed 5 points (Utilize the average of the players if more than two players are involved). If you are doing a 2-for-1 trade, both players have to be rated at least 10 points less than the single player (for example, if the one player is rated 90, the other two must be 80 and 80 respectively, or less). If you are doing a 3-for-1 trade, the three players have to be rated at least 15 points less than the single player (for example, if the one player is rated 90, the other three must be rated 75, 75, and 75 respectively, or less).
    --

is the above perfect? nope. but it made trading much more realistic in our leagues. the above can be talked about, tweaked, etc. that goes for everything.

so, things that would need to be figured out by Sunday September 2nd 8AM EST.. (hopefully sooner)
    • how many owners
    • schedule length
    • trading rules
obviously we need to see how this GM Connected is going to work. if we can remove owners and have the games still stick, or will they all reset like in the past. if they reset, this could damper us using this feature. i doubt that will happen, but ya never know with EA, their track record sucks. LOL..

i would like everyone to chime in here, post thoughts, ideas, etc.

    thanks guys...

I want in on this one for sure.

I don't want to jump the gun on any ideas, though, until we get some more information about the game mode. I'm wondering if it's going to be like Madden's Online Franchise, which is pretty much awful compared to single player Franchise, or if it will be an actual copy of GM mode and put onilne (which I'm guessing it is since I heard him say something about GM Connected being played alone or with others).

The only thing I didn't really agree with was the 2 for 1 and 3 for 1 trade stuff, but there's a ton of time to work that out. Just with NHL's ratings, trading a 90 guy for 2 80 overall guys is giving up a first line guy for 2 4th liners. But that's no big deal until we see what the trade logic is like and how everything will work.

yeah trading is a touchy subject.. the way guys get rated in EA's game are suspect for sure. but the rule i posted above worked out well. with that said, went off of 2k's ratings, so we could adjust a bit for EA's.

the thing with trading in general..

lets just say owner x, signs up, plays 20 games, trades 5 to 8 guys.. he for whatever reason cant finish the season. we replace him, but with who? player y may not want to take over a team that has been gutted so to speak.

thats why limiting how many players we can trade is key.

another thing we would have to work out is that, if its like Maddens Franchise, we can just start over for a 2nd season of this, using default rosters, having a draft etc like we do to pick teams worst to first. but it would be awesome if we can just continue into another season without having that draft. everyone would have to be content though with the teams taken.

like i mentioned, this will all be new to us hockey guys. since we used to the 1 v 1 type leagues.

im excited for this though. should be a blast!!

Oh yeah, I had absolutely no issue with the trade total. Very rare that more than 5 guys on one team will be traded in a season anyway. Was more over the way EA ratings are done compared to 2k. Maybe change it to something like 85 and 85 for a 90 and 82/83x3 for 90. But yeah, like I said, this early it's a moot point.

And I'm hoping it has a draft in it. The way they're making it sounds, I'm assuming it will. I've always loved managing a team, but it's too easy to stack a team in GM with computers.

OK, so as GM we run the team but games are simmed?
Or do you mean that now there's GM responsibilities along with playing 1v1, like in the Madden leagues.

If this is anything like Madden's Franchise I think this will be a dream mode for us that we've been waiting for....I can't wait for Sept.

    so much great stuff..

the one thing that stood out though, as its all coded to a 82 game schedule and advancing of the league in three-day, one-week, or two-week periods.

i wonder what that means with the advancing though?

like how many games on the schedule will be available to play at once? thats some important info left out for now, just curious how this will work bc it will obviously effect how we do things.

i got an answer to the above yesterday at Operation Sports...

i can control how many days/weeks are open on the actual schedule. we can do 3 days, 7 days, or 14 days open at once.

without obviously knowing 100% how this will work, from the looks of it having 2 weeks worth of games open would probably be best. why? well since we would be running with an 82 game schedule the more flexibility we can have the better. it will give guys anywhere between 6 and 10 games to play at once in that 2 week period.

i just think that 3 days dont give us much flexibility, bc we would have to wait on guys to schedule and play. it would slow us down a lot IMO.

using 7 days could be an option, as it would give us say 3 to 5 games to play..

the best part about his response above is that we are not on a set time frame where the league will advance. if we have to delay thats fine, i will have full control to make the league advance or not.

also, from reading all this info, if an owner is going to be away on vacation or away for work they can set their teams strats, lines, etc and the other player can play the cpu version of that owners team and the games get played. stats and all. can also keep up to date with it via the mobile app.

side note - we will even have the option to just GM/Coach Teams, and sim 2 weeks at a time. like a glorified console version of an OOTP Baseball style type league, but on our console. NIIIIIIIIICCCCCEEEEEEEE!!

@Side Note: That is the greatest news in the world. That just made me ridiculously excited, because that's what I love to do most.

It sounds like the advance is a mix of 2k Basketball and NCAA. Commish chooses when to advance like NCAA, but the amount of games/time passed between advances is a set amount, a la 2k basketball. That's about the only way to do it for NHL without doing a set advance schedule like 2k has, which sucks.

I'm pretty excited about this even though I'm going to be getting creamed most games. Should be a fun thing to do when not playing club.

yeah the GM stuff and simming could be a blast as well, we could possibly get one of those going as well for those that would be interested.

could be a great time killer as we wait for guys to get their games in and advance in the THL. we could do a sim of 1 week or 2 weeks at a time every other day or so.

with that said, OOTP Developments will be releasing a text sim hockey game just like their baseball game. so, we may just be better off using that instead. lol :)

    some more from Luger33..

the full hands on is what we will want to use in this, from the sounds of it. then if player x will be away or wont meet a deadline, the other player can play against him and his strategy's to get the game in on their end.

from the looks of it the commish will have that control. to assign what each owner will be etc. coach, gm, player, or all of the above.

I am optimistic, but skeptical. It all sounds fine and dandy, but what is it going to actually be like? What kind of user interface is this going to require?

Fiddy14 I'd like to throw my name in the hat to join the 13 league. I'm a casual fan of hockey during the regular season. I become a lot more dedicated during the playoffs, but being a NY Rangers fan this only lasts a round or two. I haven't played NHL in a couple of years, but I think the improvements EA is making along with the great guys here at TSO will make joining a league a lot of fun.
