S1W9 Southampton 0 vs 1 Atletico Mineiro Atletico record there first victory since the club decided to move on to knew managment. The match started off with the Saints posing the most threat. Shots coming in from all angles due to a combination of early pressure high up the pitch and the Brazilian's tendency to play the ball out of their end rather than have the keeper sending it towards midfield. Unfortunately the momentum was cut deep into the first half due to the flood lights going out (a.k.a the game froze). So after a discussion with the officials it was agreed that the match would start from the beginning. This time it was the South Americans who would come out applying the pressure with attacks, which came to fruition in the 11th minute when Jo slithered his way through the defense with just the keeper to beat. As he approached closer, he attempted a chip shot, but it deflected off the reached arms of the keeper and into open space in the box. then sprinting through was Fernandinho who was there to place the ball into the open net. Atletico kept the pressure on going into halftime, but it was different story in the second half. Mineiro resorted to a possession game, which, while they did that well, allowed Southampton to apply more pressure. Thus resulting in a slew of near converted chances. The Brazilians managed to hold on though after a few more chances of their own and went home with the 3 points.
Lille 5-1 Southampton Lille Shots 21 On Target 18 Possession 61% Gueye (17') Balmont (26') Roux (45', 80') Kalou (57') Kalou (2) Mavuba Kalou Southampton Shots 7 On Target 5 Possession 39% Cork (13') Southampton got on the board first with a beautiful strike from Cork from about 26 yards out that found the upper left hand corner in the 13th minute and took control of the game as the first 12 minutes were back and forth with no one really gaining possession. Idrissa Gana Gueye responded 4 minutes later in the 17th minute with a nice strike of his own just inside the 18 to tie it up. The goal of the game came in the 26th minute as LOSC Lille was given a free kick 22 yards out Florent Balmont stood over the ball to take the kick. As the kick left his foot the wall jumped and the ball glanced off on of the defenders head and put it in the back of the net on the opposite side of the goal as the keeper was frozen and had no chance of saving it 2-1 Lille. The flood gates opened up after that as Roux tacked on a 45th minute goal to head into the half up 3-1 then Kalou and Roux both scored in the second half as the Lille defense shut down Southamptons attack. Good game again Lucky Day
Udinese 2 Southampton 1 This game was played in a torrential downpour. After some jockeying for possession, an interception by Ranegie at the mid field line saw him find a streaking Di Natale with a great through ball between 2 Southampton defenders. Di Natale put a foot on it right before the keeper got there, lifting Udinese to a quick 1-0 lead at the 18' mark. Shortly thereafter, Pereyra was able to put on in the net from 15 feet out after a blocked shot by the Southampton keeper that found Allan, who played a perfect assist to Pereyra, giving Udinese a 2-0 lead at the 27' mark. Unfortunately, that's the most Udinese could do. Suddenly, the match swung heavy in Southampton's favor. Even though Udinese held the edge in possession, Southampton was dominating the field, with shots from everywhere. Finally at the 57' mark, Lambert scored with a great bending shot from 12 feet out. Southampton took 23 shots in all, 14 on goal, but Brkic was the Man of the Match, stopping 13 of those 14, including 3 wonderous saves within the last 5 minutes to preserve the win for the Bianconeri, their 1st in league play this season!
Udinese 0-0 Southampton Udinese Shots 1 On Target 0 Possession 51% Southampton Shots 17 On Target 7 Possession 49% Brkic Southampton traveled to Stadio Fruili for the final match up between the two teams this season. From the outset, this one was controlled by Southampton, who limited Udinese to just one shot for the entire match. The Saints however had a baffling display of shooting in this one and despite numerous chances couldn't convert any of their opportunities. Perhaps the best chance came in the first half when Rickie Lambert got free near the corner of the penalty area. All alone Lambert fired a shot that missed the goal by a huge margin and looked like it was meant to be put into the upper deck of the stadium. Chances continued to come for Southampton, including two series of shots that included balls defended at the line by Udinese players. Željko Brkić, the Serbian goalkeeper for Udinese, earned a well deserved man of the match award in a performance that saw him just barely get a finger tip on more than a few shots. In the end the Saints got a needed road draw, but left wondering how they can turn around the offense after a stretch that has seen just two goals in five matches.
CSKA Moscow 4-0 Southampton CSKA Moscow Shots 20 SOT 17 Poss 54% Honda (PK 5', 25') Dzagoev (36') Doumbia (45') Keisuke Honda Southampton Shots 11 SOT 8 Poss 46% Recap: The game opened in rainy Moscow as the home team showed dominance through the first half netting all 4 goals in the first period, the first a penalty kick coming off a advantage given in the penalty box, the referee went back after the play was over and awarded the spot kick. Keisuke opened the scoring with a well placed kick sending the keeper the opposite direction. About a minute later Osvaldo found plenty of space in the 18 Yard box but failed to find the finishing touch to put it away, almost immediately The Saints came knocking on the door again this time it was Lallana missing just a touch wide right. After some attacking play from CSKA found its self in the final third when Southampton tackled for the ball CSKA closed down for a quick turn over then finding Honda for his second goal securing his brace, only a header short of a perfect hattick but it wasn't to be. In the 36' Dzgoev buried a 18 yard strike in the top right corner just out of reach of the keepers outstretched hands. Doumbia scores a pretty routine goal getting assisted by a Tosic out swinging cross to find Doumbia's head at the far post to place it in the back of the net. The second half was ALL southampton, he had chances but just lacked that finishing touch, Jay Rod and Lambert had some great chances but Osvaldo was putting in work but just couldn't coax the ball in the back of the net. It was a great game over all, very fun to play Lucky, look forward our second.
Southampton 1-5 CSKA Moscow Southampton Shots 7 SOT 2 Poss 44% Osvaldo (77') OUT: Rodriguez IN: Lambert (72') CSKA Moscow Shots 20 SOT 12 Poss 56% Doumbia (18', 52', 77') Honda (85', 90") OUT: Wernbloom IN: Berezutskiy (72') Pontus Wernbloom Recap: This meeting in Southampton sparked the second meeting between these two sides a 6 goal affair, although Lucky got unlucky being on a losing end of a lopsided loss. The match started about 5' in when Keisuke Honda found space when he was put though by Doumbia, a great save by Boruc saw the ball go up over the cross bar. The second highlight and only other highlight in the first quarter was a goal scored by Doumbia, turning off of one defender and touching it past another to put a final foot on it pass the goal keeper in the bottom left corner 1-0 CSKA going into halftime. The second half was much more eventful baring the rest of the 5 goals. Doumbia again was to score in the 52' this time getting a favor returned by Honda playing a lay off between the two centre backs to find space, one touch and it was in the back of the net 2-0 This strike was so potent it needed it's own line break, Fonte played a ball from about 20 Yards out the clipped the top of the crossbar, This is when the unspoken rule of we need to watch the replay was taken into affect. Two minutes later a ball that squeezed its way between The Saint's 2 centre backs found its way on to Doumbia's run, only to be slotted wide right disappointing Doumbia and letting Boruc a sigh of relief. Miscommunication between the centre back and the keeper led to the Third goal of the evening, a in swinging cross from Cork found its way to Osvaldo's head between both centre backs and a outstreched keeper to bury the ball in the back of the net. Then in the last 13 minutes CSKA went on a scoring 3 goals, another one for Doumbia rounding out his Hattrick, and a Brace for Honda in the process. All three were counter attacking goals playing off of Southampton's change of formation in the 72'. In all these were good games and good luck to Lucky Day thoughout this season.
Athletico Mineiro 1-2 CSKA Moscow Athletico Mineiro Shots 10 SOT 8 Poss 60% Jo (2') CSKA Moscow Shots 9 SOT 5 Poss 40% Honda (31', 80') Recap: A rainy day in Brazil for the showdown between Mineiro and CSKA. I don't know what it is when Mineiro play but the flood lights keep going out in their games, (a slight interruption in the first minute made us restart the match) I also had a small problem, I had a little glint on my lens from where I was watching the game (There was a number seven on the bottom left hand corner of my screen for the first half...) I tried to get it off but by the time I looked back up Jo had scored and put Mineiro up 1-0. Then again in the 21' Mineiro came knocking on the door, with a gaping net and Jo looking to find another, he hits the crossbar and it goes straight to Akinfeev for a save. A monstrous chance for Jo to double the score took carelessly and missed. A minute or two after that Dzagoev strikes one wide of the Athletico keeper letting the score remain at 1-0, until the 31' when Dzagoev's cross finds Keisuke Honda at the far post with heaps of space, cool and collectively Keisuke chests the ball down and rifles it to the back of the net 1-1 going into half time. The Athletico Keeper, Victor, had to weather a storm when CSKA started to get into rhythm, chances were of quality but none went in until Honda beat Victor as the ball hits the crossbar and rolls over the goal line the long way for the winning goal. Although in the 86' Josue had a venomous strike from about 24 yards out that the keeper only could push away, it rolled to the crossbar only to have a CSKA player clear it up field. In all great game ehesky, as always I look forward to our other match up.
Yeah that was a great match. I still can't believe that i missed that chance that went off the upright post. It was a tap in. The ball came to me so quickly that I just tried my best to react and at least make contact. Shocking. hahaha.

CSKA Moscow and Udinese played both games, I couldn't grab as much info as I would like to be but I beat him in both games. Looking for more games to play to round out the season...
I'll post this once as a warning/reminder from the TFL rules: Games that finish with a goal differential of 5 or more goals will be subject to issue of red card. The decision of the red card being issued will rest in the hands of the losing team in the game. To clarify, a result is posted with a 5 or more goal differential and the assigned commish of the league will reach out to the losing team and ask if they would like to issue a red card. This red card will stand. Be easy on your opponents, and know when to let your foot off the gas. --------
Read and noted, I apologize to both of the players that I had done this too. I wasn't fully aware of this rule, I am terribly sorry for my behavior.
