    Miami Nips North Carolina

    Canes Win 31-17

Coral Gables, FL- The Coach Bulgy Era got off to a good start as Miami upset the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday.

The running game was a focus for Miami and Graig Cooper ran for 172 yards on 35 carries, but Miami needed them all as Jacory Harris got off to a rough start by throwing 5 interceptions. When Harris did hit the right jersey Aldarius Johnson was the recipient of most of his throws cathing 9 passes for 135 yards.

Next week the Canes play UCLA at home.

    Miami Slips Past UCLA

    Canes survive upset scare 37-33

Coral Gables, FL- Miami narrowly escaped an upset Saturday by barely getting past the UCLA Bruins.

Graig Cooper was again the focus as he ran 27 times for 136 yards and a TD. Jacory Harris struggled again going 19-38 but he threw for 2 TD and 1 interception. Running his total to 6 through 2 games. Aldarius Johnson went down with an injury early and wasn’t a factor. Dedrick Epps stepped up in his place and caught 6 passes.

    Miami Rolls Florida

Seminole War Canoe Heads To Miami

Gainesville, FL- Miami trounced longtime rival Florida 38-7 Saturday. Graig Cooper continued his hot start rushing 29 times for 151 yards and 2 TD. Javarris James also scored a rushing TD and added 56 yards on the ground.

Dedrick Epps played well again catching 6 passes for 144 yards and a TD. He had a 78 yard score to end the 3rd quarter and put Miami up 24-7. Jacory Harris showed signs of life going 16-20 for 249 yards and 1 TD, but he threw his 7th pick of the season. It was however a pass he threw while getting hit.

Miami kept the ball most of the second quarter. After taking over inside their own 10 yard line the Canes offense chewed up almost 4 minutes of clock on their way down the field before punching in a TD with 17 seconds left to go up 14-7. Florida tried to get into field goal range, but threw an interception on the first play. The DB was smart enough to quickly get down, and it set up a field goal for Miami to allow them to go up 17-7 at the half, and get the ball back after halftime.

    Next up is Arkansas.

    Miami Storms Arkansas

    Canes Roll 59-27

Coral Gables, FL- Coach Bulgy finally got the huge game he has been expecting from Jacory Harris on Saturday as he threw 7 TD passes en route to a huge win over the Arkansas Razorbacks. Harris finished 24-35 for 7 TD and 1 interception. He helped Miami get 581 yards of offense including 373 passing.

Harris set a new record for passing TD in a game by a Miami QB breaking the old record of 5. Graig Cooper had a good game going for 158 yards on the ground, but it took him 41 carries. Arkansas’ midget running back David Smith turned into Superman in the first half running for 133 yards and 3 TD and had 9 broken tackles. He only tallied 11 yards in the second half however.

Harris spread the ball among his receivers well hitting 5 different WR for TD and 4 went over the 60 yard mark. Dedrick Epps had 6 for 71 and a TD, Laron Byrd had 5 for 53 and 2 TD. Aldarius Johnson had 4 for 102 and 2 TD, including a 72 yarder in the second quarter. Leonard Hankerson had 3 for 61 and a TD, and Patrick Hill caught 3 balls for 46 yards and a TD.

Randy Phillips was the leader for the defense getting 5 tackles and 1 for a loss he also managed to deflect 5 passes. But true freshman Ray Ray Armstrong had 3 and also came up with a fumble recovery.

Miami looks to have their work cut out for them next week as they take on the Ohio State Buckeyes.

    Miami Rolls Over Georgia

    Canes Win 59-7

Coral Gables, FL- The story of the blowout is the sprained elbow of Graig Cooper. Cooper missed the whole game with a sprained elbow, and it looks like he could miss a month of football. It looks like SR Javarris James and true freshman Lamar Miller will have to carry the ball for a Miami offense that has also seen JaCory Harris succumb to the injury bug.

If the defense plays the rest of the season the way they played against UGA the offense may not have to be explosive. The Miami defense held Georgia’s offense to 210 yards on the day and forced 4 turnovers. The kickoff unit forced and returned 2 fumbles for TD’s in the final minute of the first quarter. Those two plays turned a 21-7 Miami lead into a 35-7 point hole that no one was coming out of.

The Miami offense was one dimensional with the big lead, and Lamar Miller carried 29 times for 104 yards and 4 TD’s. Randy Phillips was the defensive player of the game with 4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss and an interception. Phillips downed the pick at the 25 to allow the offense to wind down the clock in the victory formation.

    Miami Survives Penn State

    Canes Win 33-27

Happy Valley, PA- Lamar Miller filled in admirably for Graig Cooper on Saturday with 28 carries for 129 yards and 1 TD. Javarris James was happy to pilfer TD’s as a goal line back carrying 15 times for 38 yards and 2 TD’s. The offense had a tough time picking up yards against a stout defense. AJ Highsmith found that out first hand going 11-26 with 1 TD and 3 picks. Sean Spence had a great game on defense with 7 tackles 3 tackles for loss and a safety.

    Miami Routs FSU

    Seminoles Lose Early Lead

Coral Gables, FL- FSU had an early lead on Miami, but lost it amid a nasty string of errors, turned a 7 point cushion into a 15 point deficit.

Ty Jones, took a hand off from the QB and turned in a TD 28 yards later to put FSU up 21-14 with 2:58 left in the first quarter. The Hurricanes were led downfield on the arm of Taylor Cook until Lamar Miller put in a TD from 5 yards out to tie the game. The Miami defense forced a very quick 3 and out and were able to sneak one last TD in to take the lead with :04 left on the clock. FSU returned the short kickoff to the 40 yard line. On FSU’s Hail Mary play DeMarcus Van Dyke comes up with an interception and returns the ball to the 10 yard line. When Van Dyke got to the 10 he saw he was going to be tackled just short of the endzone and attempted a lateral to Marcus Forston. An FSU defender was able to swat the ball down before Forston could catch it. Forston returned the fumble the rest of the way for a 36-21 lead.

Taylor Cook placed his arms firmly around the starting QB position with a 19-26 296 and 4 TD effort. And Lamar Miller nearly broke the 100 yard mark in his final start before Graig Cooper’s return. It was a total team effort on defense and no one player really stood out Saturday.

#6 Miami Survives #5 Notre Dame

    Canes Win 42-35

South Bend, IN- Miami was able to survive several charges by the #5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, mainly because the offense kept moving down the field. Miami had a huge offensive day in a game they needed to have one.
Miami had big days from several players who stepped up in situations throughout the game to keep the Hurricanes one step ahead of the Fighting Irish. Taylor Cook stepped up in a big way in his first major road test, throwing for 357 yards on 24-29 passing with 3 TD’s and most importantly 0 interceptions. His 2 main targets throughout the game were Aldarius Johnnson who caught 8 passes for 124 yards and Dedrick Epps who caught 6 for 104 yards. Both players scored a TD, and Laron Byrd joined them in the endzone. Lamar Miller and Javarris James stepped up to fill in for a suspended Graig Cooper (I forgot to change the depth chart after he returned) carrying a combined 30 times for 96 yards. The Miami offense stepped up in a huge situation late in the second quarter

The Hurricanes had driven inside the Notre Dame 10 yard line before being stopped for a 3 yard gain on a 3rd and 4 from the 10. Coach Bulgy sent out his field goal unit with 1:19 left in the game. Before the ball was snapped Coach Bulgy decided to go for it. The offense picked up a first and scored a TD to go up 21-7 with :19 seconds to go in the half. They scored a TD quickly in the 3rd to go up 28-7. The offense stalled through the rest of the 3rd quarter, but got going again in the 4th.

The defense played a solid game against the run game, but struggled to contain the Notre Dame passing attack. Jimmy Clausen threw for 356 yards and 4 TD on 24-38 passing with 1 interception. The defense did manage to sack Clausen 5 times. Marcus Robinson and Eric Moncur each picked up 2 and Marcus Forston picked up one. Cedric Grant and Randy Phillips led the team in tackles with 6 each. Colin McCarthy made on play all game long, but it stopped a Notre Dame drive in its tracks, so the OLB will be forgiven for not making a single tackle all game long.

The Hurricanes have 2 more games left in the season, next week at home against LSU and the final week of the season on the road in Tuscaloosa to face the Alabama Crimson Tide.
