    2009 Ole Miss Rebels

    Ole Miss(1-0) @ Memphis(0-1)

    Ole Miss - 37
    Memphis - 10

The game started off great for the Rebels with an intercepction for a touchdown by linebacker Patrick Trahan. The ground game was somethin' serious with 252 yards. Brandon Bolden the had most with 211 yards but Cordera Eason had some quality runs for 2 touchdowns. Even with all of those yards on offense the highlight of the night has to be the 6 turnovers(All 6 were interceptions) caused by the Rebels. Ole Miss heads into their bye week concentrating on improving their Pass Defense (276 Passing Yards Allowed) before West Virginia comes to town hoping to make the Rebels next on their list. Who will win? Well the naked eye says "shoot-out" but if the Rebels can capitalize on mistakes like they did against Memphis, its very possible you will see this same score except with West Virginia on the other end...

    West Virginia(2-1) @ Ole Miss(2-0)

    West Virginia - 24
    Ole Miss - 27

Ole Miss started off the game by jumping ahead with 13 unanswered points thanks to 2 40+ yard FG's by Joshua Shene and an INT returned by Marshay Green for a TD. But by the end of the half West Virginia had come back and were up 14-13 courtesy of a 31 yard TD pass hauled in by Jock Sanders and an INT that was retuned for a TD. But during there comeback star running back Noel Devine suffered an injury that kept him out for the rest of the game.

Down 17-13 in the 4th the unusually stagnant Rebel offense came alive with a 25 yard TD pass from Jevan Snead to Shay Hodge to put them up 20-17. With 3:21 left in the game. Later on, an errant pass by Jarrett Brown was hauled in by linebacker Allen Walker for another Pick-6. After a strategic TD drive led by Brown that put the Mountaineers within 3, they failed to recover the onside kick and the Rebels got the ball back with less than 30 seconds left in the game. And with no timeouts, the WVU defense could only stand there as Snead took a knee to lock up the hardfought battle 27-24.

The key to the win for Ole Miss was there newfound practice of causing gamechanging turnovers. But the Mountaineers also caused there fair share(2 INT's, 1 Fumble). Also one has to wonder if the game would have been different if Noel Devine had not been injured, he started off slow but he does have that Big Play ability.

The Players of the Game were Jock Sanders for WVU and Greg Hardy for Ole Miss and both desrved it. Sander's 2 TD receptions kept the Mountaineers in the game and Hardy's 4 sacks(New Ole Miss Single Game Record) kept the pressure off the Rebel secondary.

Next week WVU has a bye week before TCU comes to town to take on the Mountaineers while Ole Miss gets limited rest before heading into Williams-Brice Stadium for a Thursday Night Game against Steve Spurrier and his rebuilding South Carolina Gamecock. (Can anyone say trap game?)

Yeah, may have caught a lucky break there - Devine runs all over me whenever I play against WV. Nice win, and good write-up.

Thanks raz, I had to do some research for the Hardy sack record. I didn't know they didn't have them in online dynasties.

    Ole Miss (2-1) @ South Carolina (1-3)

    Ole Miss - 43
    South Carolina - 45

In what was believed to be a trap game waiting to happen, Ole Miss lost there SEC opener to a South Carolina. A team that many feel are the "bottom feeders" of the SEC West. This was a straight slugfest, South Carolina's punches were just more effective. The game was decided in the 4th when the Rebels failed to recover an onside kick after not being able to get the 2 point conversion to tie the game. After that the Gamecocks just took a couple of kneeldowns to drain the rest of the clock. This was also the first game that Ole Miss lost the turnover battle (2 INT's, 1 Fumble against South Carolina's 1 INT). Ole Miss will try to pick up the pieces and go to Nashville next week where they will take on Vandy in a cross division rivalry. Hopefully Ole Miss will have an improved pass defense where they continue to struggle.

    *SIDENOTE*

Just a week after Greg Hardy got the school record for sacks in a game (4), Marcus Tillman tied that record this week against the Gamecocks. Both players are now in line to get the school record for sacks in a season and I'm sure it will be a very competitive race. Right now, Tillman is in the lead with 6 sacks on the season but Hardy is only 2 behind.

    Ole Miss (3-1) @ Vanderbilt (2-3)

    Ole Miss - 55
    Vanderbilt - 31

A week after the shootout loss, Ole Miss came into Vandy hoping to start causing turnovers again, and limit their own. Well they did one of the two and both teams finished with 2 INT's and 2 fumbles lost. Snead got off to a hot start going 3 for 4 and throwing a TD before he went down with an injury that kept him out for the remainder of the game. Thats when the running game came in amassing more than 250 yds on the ground with Bolden, Eason, and McCluster getting some reps. Vandy's Hawkins had a great day with over 100 yds rushing but his performance was in vein because the passing attack was nowhere near effective.

Next week is a must win situation for the Rebels if they want a shot at the SEC title. They go into to Tuscaloosa to play Alabama, a team they have played well against in recent years.

"Everyone is gonna be talking about our strategy with the running game but I think Snead is ready to come out and make his case as an elite quarterback at this level. So I'm gonna put the game in his hands and see how it folds out. I'm confident that he can do what needs to be done when in the clutch situations." - Coach Perry

    Week 8

    Arkansas (4-3) @ Ole Miss (5-2)

    Arkansas - 34
    Ole Miss - 25

This season, Ole Miss has won games off of safe play and causing turnovers. That wasn't the case this week. Not only did they not force a single turnover(first game to not cause a turnover all season), they played sloppy on offense and forced turnovers on themselves. Snead passed for 315 yards, but he had 5 INT's. Bolden rushed for 100+ yards, but he lost a fumble and only had 1 TD. McCluster, Breaux, Harris, and Hodge combined for 250 receiving yards, but they also combined for 6 drops. The defense only deflected 4 passes out of 28 thrown. The only thing consistent was the front seven(15 TFL, 5 sacks). Marcus Tillman became the school record holder for sacks in a season(9 sacks). If he can manage to get 7 more he will hold the school record for career sacks.

Next week, the Rebels head to Auburn to attempt a rebound. They are now in a must-win situation if they want to even consided going to Atlanta for the SEC Championship game.

    Week 9

    Ole Miss (6-2) @ Auburn (7-2)

    Ole Miss - 41
    Auburn - 27

Short Summary: This week the Rebels were back to causing turnovers(4 total, 3 FUMB, 1 INT) but they still had trouble preventing them(5 total, 1 FUMB, 4 INT). Snead had a terrible day and once again it was the rushing attack that bailed him out(272 yards, 4 TD).

    Week 10

    Ole Miss (7-2) @ Texas (7-2)

    Ole Miss - 24
    Texas - 7

Short Summary: Snead's return to DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium didn't go quite go like he planned. He threw an interception and was injured before the 2nd half leaving back-up Billy Tapp to do the dirty work. He didn't put up Heisman numbers but he was effective. The rushing attack did it again this time with 254 yards and 2 TD. The defense let McCoy pass for 200+ yards bu he only had 1 TD.

    Week 11

    Tennessee(6-4) @ Ole Miss(7-3)

    Tennessee - 33
    Ole Miss - 23

Short Summary: Ole Miss went in to this game looking ahead to rival LSU and they got caught under the chin by the Volunteer defense. They had the Rebel rushing attack in a strangle hold the entire game and for just the second time this season, Ole Miss didn't have a player with 100+ yards rushing.

    Week 12

    LSU (6-5) @ Ole Miss (8-3)

    LSU - 28
    Ole Miss - 45

Summary: After losing their last 2 home games, many people were already counting the Rebels out in their rivalry game with LSU. They were also counting them out on possibly winning the division considering that Ole Miss HAD to win this game...Thats all the Rebels needed to know.

The Rebels were on a mission and jumped ahead 14-0 by the end of the first quarter. Then Snead, once considered a Heisman hopeful, started throwing INT's but they left him in because of the good plays he made. With time running out in the 1st half Snead threw another ill-advised pass in the endzone when he had 2 players open. Then he was benched and back again was senior QB Billy Tapp. His first pass was incomplete and his second was an INT because his receiver slipped while making his cut. But his third pass was a 41 yard to Summers that set up an 8 yard TD pass to Hodge. Bolden kept the defense tired with his 29 carries for 190 yards and 2 TD.

Next week we head to Starkville for the Egg Bowl. Ole Miss needs to win this game and Auburn needs to lose the Iron Bowl in order for the Rebels to punch there ticket for Atlanta. Maybe Coach Perry will call down to T-Town to give Saban a few pointers...
