2010 ECU Pirates Week 2 East Carolina 21 - Memphis 19 East Carolina played their second nail biter game in a row, this time coming out as the victors over Memphis. This game was a defensive battle throughout, but especially in a 1st quarter that saw no scoring. Amazingly, it took a safety to get ECU on the board first for a two point lead. Memphis came back to take the lead on a Cannon Smith TD pass. ECU then struck back with a TD and a FG to take a 12-7 lead into halftime. After halftime Memphis scored the only TD in the 3rd quarter to take a 13-12 lead into the 4th. Was the missed extra point here a preview of things to come? In the 4th, the teams traded early TD to set the stage for a long ECU drive that ended with a 42 yd Ben Ryan FG to claim the lead with 2:07 remaining in the game. Now the ECU defense just needed one more stop but were unable to stop the Memphis drive. With four seconds remaining, Memphis kicker Henriqes lined up for a 35 yard FG. The kick went up and was WIDE RIGHT! Time ran off the clock and the Pirates escaped with an amazing 21-19 win. Statistically for the Pirates, HB Norman Whitley had a breakout game with 25 carries for 162 yd, including an impressive 78 yd TD run in the 2nd quarter. In other news, ECU coaches announced that Soph QB Brad Wornick will be the new starter moving forward with a 10-19 177 yd performance in this game. He will take over for Sr Dominique Davis who was a dismal 3-12 for 14 yd.
