Florida State comes off a very successful season in which they won the ACC and beat Boise State in the BCS Orange Bowl. The 2011 Seminoles hope to have better success. We return a majority of our starters and see no reason why we cannot compete for another ACC title.

    Quarterbacks
Gone is Christian Ponder. Ponder knew how to run the offense and not turn the ball over. Taking his place is Junior EJ Manuel(91ovr). Manuel appears ready to pick up where ponder left off. EJ has a nice arm and is a threat to run with the ball(82spd). Things could get interesting if Manuel goes down. Behind him on the depth chart is Sophomore QB Will Secord(72ovr) and redshirt Freshman Clint Trickett(69ovr). Both are traditional passers. We did bring in the top rated QB from Texas. Scott Jones however did not appear ready to play in the spring practices and will be redshirted.

    Running Backs
FSU has a solid trio of running backs that should produce nice results on the ground. The starter will be Senior Jermaine Thomas. Jermaine was solid last year, running for just under 1000 yards. He got off to a slow start but found his groove late in the season. We are hoping that success continues into this year. Backing him up will be Freshman Brendan Marks. Marks is a scat back how will not run anyone over. He is a nice receiving option out of the back field and could see action on 3rd downs. Junior Chris Thompson is the speedster(95spd) of the bunch and will provide a nice change of pace from time to time.

    Wide Receivers
There is plenty of depth, size, and speed to be found in this group. We currently have 10 receivers on the squad and only 2 are seniors. I would expect to see a lot of multiple WR packages this year. Junior Willie Haulstead returns after a 1000 yard season and looks to have the same chemistry with EJ Manuel. Senior Bert Reed is probably the most talented of the bunch, but had a very disappointing 2010 season. Drops were a big problem for Bert and he lost the confidence of his QB. It would be nice to see him play up to his potential. Two other players to see extensive playing time are giants Jarmon Fortson(6’3 221lbs) and Rodney Smith(6’6 221lbs)/

    Tight Ends and Offensive Linemen
The tight ends factored little in the passing game last year and would appear to be the case again. Senior Beau Reliford and Freshman Atari Young are more run blockers than receivers. The line is an experienced bunch that will start 5 seniors, 3 of which are 90+ overall.

    Defensive Line
The line features a pair of undersized DE’s. Junior Toshmon Stevens could be poised for a break out year after totaling 7 sacks his sophomore year. Junior Brandon Jenkins will get the start at the other end. Jenkins is undersized(236 lbs) but has a quick burst(94acc) that should give opposing QB’s fits. Defensive Tackle sees the return of two starters from last year. Senior Moses McCray is a large run stopped who weighs 304 lbs. Junior Jacobbi McDaniel comes off of an outstanding sophomore season that saw him record 6 sacks and a pick-six INT. Can he make the jump and play at an All-American level?

    Linebackers
This is the core of our defense and the key to our season last year. We return all 3 starting LB’s in seniors Nigel Carr, Vince Williams, and Nigel Bradham. Carr flies all over the field while Williams and Bradham just take care of business. Jeff Luc(81ovr) is a promising freshman who can fill in if any of the big three are injured.

    Defensive Backs
Junior Greg Reid and Freshman Lamarcus Joyner will be the starters heading into the season. Reid played wonderfully as the nickleback last year and has all of the tools to be a shutdown corner. Joyner is a slower but physical corner who will harass the opposing teams WR’s. The safety’s are a pair of returning Junior starters. Nick Moody and Terrance Parks had solid sophomore seasons and we expect more of the same out of them.

Not much to say about this one. Manuel did not look like he was ready to handle to starting duties at QB. The young FSU secondary could not cover any of the Trojan WR's. If things are not corrected we could be in for a long season.

The Seminoles were beat down by USC in week 1. Week 2 saw rival Virginia invade Tallahassee. We had many questions as the Seminoles showed nothing on offense. EJ Manuel showed enough this week to give the Seminole faithful a little hope that he could lead FSU to a few wins this year. Manuel went 9/14 through the air with a TD and also added a rushing TD. Brendan Marks has a nice day, getting solid playing time in the 4th quarter after FSU had built a 21-6 lead. Marks would score his first FSU TD on a 4 yard rush. He also added 98 total yards. The D was solid against the run, allowing the Cavaliers an average of only 2.65 yards a rush. The passing game does seem suspect. Matt Barkley lit us up for over 300 yards, and Virginia's Ross Metheny threw for over 300 as well. This needs to get corrected and fast.

Next Week we travel to Boston College for an always crucial ACC matchup.

Last years game was won and lost by the kickers. Boston College kicker Freese missed 3 FG's while FSU kicker Dustin Hopkins made 3 FG's, including the game winner in overtime. This year things would play out very similar.

The Florida State offense started out sputtering. On our first 3 possessions we had an INT, lost fumble, and a 3 and out. BC would turn their first 3 possessions into 10 points. It would have been more, but Freese would miss a FG.

It would take an injury to starting HB Jermaine Thomas to get the Seminole offense moving. Freshman Brennan Marks filled in for Thomas for one series. Marks cantributed 5 rushes for 27 yards and a couple cathes. The drive ended on a 2yd TD pass from Manuel to Bert Reed. Late in the quarter we were driving hoping to take the lead before half when TE Beau Reliford fumbled the ball away in Boston College territory. 10-7 at the half.

Heading into the fourth quarter BC had a 17-10 lead. Jermaine Thomas would provide a much needed spark early in the quarter. He took a pitch and outran everyone for a 49 yard TD run to tie the game. BC would get the ball back and play ball controll offense. they ran 4 minutes off of the clock before settling on another Freese FG attempt. Once again he would miss. This gave FSU their chance. They relied on Thomas to get them into FG range. Dustin Hopkins showed Freese how its done for the 2nd year in a row and hit the 37 yard FG as time expired. I am sure the BC fans cannot wait for Freese to gradaute, it may be all it takes to finally beat the Seminoles.

FSU has a bye week. We need to continue to get EJ Manuel rolling. He has played solid at times, but I did not realize how much Christian Ponder would be missed.

Duke came to play, but they just didnt have enough to overtake FSU. Jermaine Thomas had a solid game with 94 rushing yards and a pair of TD's. The Seminole D added a pair of defensive TD's. The problem with the secondary continued despite the pair of pick 6's. Duke's QB Renfree went for 362 yards in the air. It may be time to shake up the depth chart.

Florida State had been getting burned by the passing game all year. I decided to mix up the depth chart a little and see what happens. The results were better than expected as we held Wake Forest to 7/19 78 yards and 1 INT. Granted it was Wake Forest, but Duke had put up over 300 yards through the air. So I am exicited with the progress, but we will get a true test next week against a tough Miami squad.

On offense we relied on the rushing game. EJ Manuel just doesnt seem like he can get the job done. He has the attributes, so the problem is probably myself. The running back trio of Jermaine Thomas, Brendan Marks, and Christian Thompson combined for all 5 of the Seminole TDs, 4 on the ground and 1 recieving. On defense Toshmon Stephens had a pair of Sacks and Nigel Carr added an INT.

Big conference/rivalry game next week againt the Miami Hurricanes. We have several recruits coming in so we need to make a good showing. I typically try to avoid user games for recruit visits, but I had no choice with the way my schedule was set up. This could make or break my recruiting class this year.

First time I'll ever be rooting for Miami in my life. This Georgia to FSU pipeline needs to be shut down somehow.

This was a huge rivalry matchup. Florida State had a lot on the line with all 13 of their recruiting targets in attendance. Miami was looking to regain in-state bragging rights after a close loss last year.

Miami started out quick. The made quick work of the FSU defense. Jacory Harris was shredding the secondary. Miami scored 14 opeing quarter points on a 77 yard TD pass to Benjamin and a Miller 28 yard untouched TD run right up the gut of the FSU Defense.

It was 14-7 with about 5 minutes left in the 2nd quarter when the big play of the game happened. EJ Manuel hit Jerome Fortson over the middle for what I thought was a game tieing TD. The ball was knocked loose and recovered by the Hurricanes. After watching the reply, the refs missed the called, it should have been a touchback and Miami ball at the 20. But the refs called it a safety, giving FSU 2 points and the ball back. Im not sure Miami ever really recoverd from the play.

Florida State went on to rely heavily on the run game. Jermain Thomas finished with 172 yards and 2 TD. Florida State won the turnover battle 3-1 and the time of possession 21:24 to 6:36.. EJ Manuel had a nice game completing 13/18 passes for 232 yards and a TD.

Great game Masler. Next week FSU has a bye week where we hope to announce a few signings.

Maryland came out looking for an upset, and they almost got it. It was only a minute and a half into the game and Maryland had already built a 14-0 lead. It appeared as if the Terrapins had viewed tape of our previous games and wanted to make EJ Manuel beat them. They loaded up to stop the run and it worked, limiting us to only 62 yards on the ground. Their ROLB was a beast blowing up the running plays in the backfield on many occasions.

Manuel showed that he is capable of winning games and not just managing the offense. He completed passes to 9 differant reciever. He totaled 342 yards passing and all 5 of the Seminole TD's.

This was a rivalry game with a lot on the line. The winner would earn the right to play probable ACC Coastal winner North Carolina in the ACC Championship Game. With all the hype, Clemson came out and laid an egg. FSU dominated this game from start to finish. We ran a perfectly balanced offensive attack that saw us run for 199 yards and pass for 199 yards. We won the turnover battle 3:1 and the time of possession battle by almost 11 minutes. EJ Manuel competed 70% of his passes and threw a pair of TD's. Chris Thompson lead the way on the ground with 108 yards on only 7 carries.

We have earned a spot in the ACC championship game for the 2nd straight year. We finish out the regular season with a tough stretch against the SEC. Our last 3 games are @ Georgia, home against Florida, and @ Alabama. The schedule makers were tough on us this year.

Bsta and I have been in a few recruiting battles, but this would be the first time we have met on the gridiron. This was a tough game where the defenses set the tempo. Georgia jumped out to an early 10-0 lead when the kicked a FG on their opening drive. They then abruptly EJ Manuel and turned that into a 16 yard Murray to Brown TD pass. FSU would then settle for 2 FG's in the second quarter. The last was helped by a dropped UGA into that somehow ended up in Willie Haulstead hands. We caught a break there. In the 3rd quarter FSU was finally able get into the endzone on a 1 yard TD run by Jermaine Thomas. Late in the 4th quarter, Georgia had the ball and the momentum. The drove down to the redzone and were definatly in FG range. They didnt want to settle for a FG and it backfired. Senior CB Dionte Allen jumped a slant route and intercepted the ball, perserving the win for the Seminoles.

GG Bsta, that one easily could have gone the other way.
