    2011 Maryland Terrapins Preview

This season the Terrapins come in with much higher expectations then what they did last year. With 18 starters returning from a 9-4 squad we will be looking to finish top 3 in the ACC, and hopefully earn a spot in the Conference Championship Game. The Terps will also look to improve upon their #24 ranking at the end of last season, and enter this season in much better position to do so, ranked #33 in the Preseason Polls.

    Projected Record
    9-4

    Offense

This year's offense returns 9 starters from a team that averaged 31.1 points per game last season, including All ACC wideout Torrey Smith. The focus this year will move more towards the passing game with the graduation of the ACC's leading rusher Da Rel Scott, but replacement Davin Meggett should come in and have a solid year after averaging 5.3 yards per carry in his backup role last season. The Terps will have some competition for the quarterback position next season, after Danny O'Brien had a solid season stepping in for the injured Jamarr Robinson last season, but Robinson is currently the favorite to win the job. The Terps will also be returning 4 of the 5 offensive lineman from last year, which should prove to help Meggett find some open lanes to run through.

    Defense

The defense also only graduated 2 starters from last years team, but both were key starting linebackers. Alex Wujciak is going to be the biggest loss for the Terrapins after leading the team in tackles and tackles for a loss. The Terps return their entire front 4 though, including All ACC end Derek Drummond, who finished with 11 sacks last season. The entire secondary also returns all 4 starters. The secondary was the highlight of the defense last year, causing the majority of turnovers the Terrapins forced last year. The defense will be looking to rely on the secondary and front 4 to makeup for a lack of experience at linebacker, and keep the team in games.

    Signed :3stars: MLB Shaun Alexander.

Shaun doesn't thave extraoridnary athletic ability or understanding of the game, but he is a solid tackler who can get off of blocks relatively well. He will probably be redshirting as a freshman to bulk up a little bit and figure out the defensive schemes. We are hoping he can contribute tot the team in his junior and senior years.

If he's anything like "the" Shaun Alexander, then you should be alright. GO Hawks!!!!

Stewart will be filling a need at SS for the Terrapins. He comes in at 6'6 and is solid in zone coverage. His man coverage on the other hand could use a little bit of work. Stewart should be a solid starter for the Terps before he graduates.

    Signed :3stars: TE Quintin Morris

Quintin is a sure handed tight end, but doesn't have a lot of speed. He blocks well for running plays, but is honestly quite terrible as a pass blocker. If he can develop his pass blocking skills he could turn into an everyday TE for the Terps.

Daniels may make a transition to SS, as he is a little bit slow compared to most free safeties. He excels in man coverage and can real pack a punch in his hits, especially for his smaller frame (6'1, 188). Look for Daniels to start early in his career if he can make a smooth transition.

    Signed :4stars: HB Clay Lumpkin

Clay is one of the top 150 players in the country according to ESPN U, and is the gem of the Terrapin recruiting class so far. Clay will possibly make an impact on special teams as a true freshman with his 4.3 40 speed, and shifty moves. He needs to improve on catching the ball out of the backfield, or he may need to be subbed out on 3rd downs.

    Signed :3stars: K Aaron Royal

Aaron will look to replace stud kicker Nick Ferrara in 2 years. Signing Aaron now was huge because it allows him to take a redshirt year to develop his leg more, and hopefully continue the solid kicking game the Terrapins have enjoyed the last couple of years.

    Signed :4stars: ATH Drew Nugent

Drew is the 2nd ESPN U Top 150 player the Terrapins have signed this season, and is coming in with a large skill set. He played both OLB and HB in high school, and could end up playing either position for Maryland in the next few years.

    Signed :4stars: QB Kevin Diggs

Kevin is very similar to current starter Jamarr Robinson. He likes to use his legs to create plays, and hasn't really found himself as a passer yet. He can put decent zip on the ball, but misses too many targets to be consistent. If he can develop his accuracy, look for him to be a star for the Terrapins in his junior and senior years.

Joe was signed to fill a vacancy at fullback. He is a below average player at best, but works hard and will hopefully contribute to the team.

Matt is undersized for a defensive end at 6'4 234, but he is too slow to make the transition to outside linebacker. He will probably redshirt his freshman year to add some strength before he is able to contribute.

Todd is one of the top rated guards coming out of this years class, and possesses good size and strength. He is much more developed as a pass blocker, but will improve in his run blocking. We are looking for Todd to come in and contribute as a freshman depending on how our returning players progress.

Allen comes in as a pocket passer, compared to Kevin Diggs who is more of a scrambler. Allen possesses a strong arm but lacks in athleticism. If he can get a solid line in front of him he could turn out to be a solid quarterback.

Ernest is extremely slow for a wide receiver, and lacks agility. But to make up for it he has reliable hands and is not afraid to go over the middle to make a catch. At 6'4 he should be a solid threat at receiver.
