    2011 NC St. Preview

    Returning Offensive Starters:

    QB-Russell Wilson, RB-Brandon Barnes, FB-Taylor Gentry, TE-George Bryan, T-Robert Crisp, G-R.J. Mattes, G-Andrew Wallace and C-Camden Wentz

Coming off one of the greatest offensive seasons in school history the Wolfpack return the bulk of their starters. Missing is two of the most dynamic receivers that have dawned the red and white jerseys. Jarvis Williams broke all the school records and leaves behind a legacy for the returning pass catchers to shoot for. In a breakout campaign QB Mike Glennon took over the controls for an injured Russell Wilson and exploded onto the scene. He will most likely back up Wilson to start the season but don’t expect him to stay on the bench the whole season. Wilson has the potential to be a Heisman trophy candidate if he can stay healthy. He combines great athletic ability with a strong and accurate arm. Brandon Barnes is a touchdown machine and will bring back his talents to a crowded backfield. Senior Curtis Underwood and freshman redshirt Mustufa Greene look to push Barnes for carries. While Barnes won’t flash super exciting skills, his workmanlike approach is refreshing to the NC St. staff. One of the more exciting players in the spring has been tight end George Bryan. Bryan is a very reliable target and really works the middle of the field like a pro. Look for him to have a breakout season with the losses of two starters at receiver. On a team lacking big playmakers, WR T.J. Graham is a man amongst boys. He’s fast and quick and really snatches the ball out of the air. His 64 catches and 1,380 yards were second on the team last year. The offensive line is solid and should be better given the year of experience. I expect great things from this offense if injuries don’t ravage them like they did a year ago.

    Returning Defensive Starters:

DT-J.R. Sweezy, OLB- Audie Cole, OLB- Dwayne Maddox, CB-C.J. Wilson, CB- Rashard Smith, FS- Brandan Bishop, SS- Earl Wolff

In defense of the poor performance last year, the NC St. defense was on the field a lot as they saw their explosive offense score fast and furious. This put a very mediocre talented group on their heels. They struggled to stop the run and the pass at different points in the season. The entire defensive line minus Sweezy is gone and the replacements aren’t looking like world beaters. In the absence of team captain Nate Irving due to injury, OLB Audie Cole played very well and looks to be the leader of the defense. He combines with senior backer Dwayne Maddox to give the Wolfpack some experience and leadership. The entire defensive secondary is back and are looking to redeem themselves after they were demoralized in a few late season games. All-American corner C.J. Wilson is coming off a 7 interception season and is hoping to play at the same level he did last season. Finishing 118th in the NCAA in defense is embarrassing, and there is no where to go but up. Expect the defense to improve, but not to the level that the staff is hoping for.

    Returning Special Team’s:

    P-Chris Ward, KR/PR-T.J. Graham

Chris Ward was very solid in his first season as a starter. This season he may be asked to double as the placekicker as well. This duo role will allow true freshman Nick Grigsby to get his feet wet and get accustomed to big time ACC football. The return game is highlighted by the best athlete on the team, T.J. Graham. While expectations are very high for this senior speedster, he was less than stellar a season ago in the return game. There has been talk that with Graham’s emergence as the team’s number one receiver they might pull him from special teams to avoid any chance of injury.

    Team Overview:

North Carolina St. is an offensive juggernaught that was a late field goal away from winning the ACC title last season. Defensively the Wolfpack are overmatched at times and remain the achilles heal. If the offense can outscore opponents as they did a season ago, expect them to challenge for a conference title. The talent is there for a big run, but with the bulk of this talent in their last year this could be a due or die mentality to get it done immediately. Last year I predicted 6-9 wins and the Wolfpack managed to exceed expectations with 11. This year I’m seeing 10 wins as a ceiling and 8 wins at the least.

    First commit

    1. Signed CB-Jason Oliver from North Carolina. He's a 3 star corner with good speed and acceleration. He's considered average in man and zone coverage but is a great opening week sign for a team looking to improve their coverage.

    2. Signed RB-John Roth from South Carolina. Good size and speed, Roth excels in north/south running. Not agile or electric, he is a positive yard workhorse.

    1. Signed CB-Travis Brown from Tennessee. He's a 3 star corner with good speed and acceleration. He projects better in zone coverage but has potential to be a solid all-around cover man.
    2. Signed G-Drew Amos from Montreal. Good size and is above average in most skills. Should prove to be a great find as the Wolfpack nab a French Canadian.
