    Nebraska-39 Pitt-10

The blackshirt defense was out and about for Nebraska's season opener against the Pitt Panthers. The Huskers D held the Panthers to just 81 yrds on offense while accumulating 6.5 sacks on the QB and 2 INT's, one of which was returned for a TD. Pitt came out of the gates fired up and ready but met a brick wall in the Cornhuskers defense. (HB) Rex Burkhead looked to be well on his way for 150+ yrds rushing in the first half but couldn't get his legs going in the second. Don't feel to bad for Burkhead though... he comes away as player of the game garnering over 188 all purpose yards and 2 TD's. The Nebraska offense showed promise against Pitt. For those who saw the game, it just seemed that even though they put up 39 points... the O seemed stifled and confused at times. Next week, Nebraska gears up to face off against the Florida Gators for a preseason showdown in the Sea of Red. (Game is sold out)

    Nebraska-35 Florida-24

In what might have been one of the toughest home openers in Nebraska history. The Huskers take the Victory out of Florida's hands in a 35-24 victory. This game was exciting to say the least. The final score did not indicate how close of a matchup this truely was. (CB) Ciante Evans was given player of the game for an impressive defensive performance snagging 2 int's. However had the Gaters come out with the win, all credit would've gone to their talented backup (RB) Mike Gillislee, who garnered 130 yards on the ground averaging 8.6 yrds a carry with one TD. The blackshirts looked suspect at times not comming up with many answers to the Florida ground attack. Florida however had (RB) Rex Burkhead's number all night holding him to only 10 yards on 13 carries. If not for a standout performance by Neb (QB) Taylor Martinez, 20/33 for 263 yrds and a pair of TD's, this game would have most likely gone the way of the Gators. Nebraska scored the go ahead TD with 1:42 left on the game clock putting them ahead 28-24, then put the nail in the coffin recovering a Florida fumble on the ensuing kickoff, closing the book on this instant classic. Next week the #15 Nebraska Cornhuskers will welcome the Washington Huskies to the Sea of Red. The game will be regionally broadcast. Kickoff is set for 7 PM.

    Nebraska-27 Washington-14

The Washington Huskies did all they could to invade the sea of red and sneak out with a victory. And if not for the sloppy play of (QB) Keith Price, that might have been possible. The Washington (QB) managed to go 21/35 through the air for 237 yrds and a TD... however the 6, yes 6, interceptions dug the Huskies into a hole too deep to climb out of. Give the credit to the Huskers D-Line, making life hard on the opposing QB. Price was sacked twice and ran for his life anytime the ball was in his hands. These hurries made for some bad passes... 6 that show up on paper. However the Washington coach showed either confidence or craziness in keeping soph (QB) in the game without a sub. On the Cornhuskers offensive side, it was the "Rex Burkhead show". After a lackluster game against Florida last week, Coach Kyle made his criticism of Burkhead public. Calling him out this last week in practice. Burkhead obviously responded to Kyle's agressive form of motivation, rushing for 200 yrds on 31 carries and punching into the endzone twice. The play of the game was Burkhead's 86 yrd TD run just after a big defensive stand, stopping Washington's 4th down conversion attempt with 5:40 left in the second. The success of Nebraska's ground game made (QB) Taylor Martinez's life a lot easier. Martinez only threw 15 passes completing 9 with no TD's and 1 Int that bounced off the helmet of a UW D-lineman. "Yah it doesn't seem like an OUTSTANDING game for Taylor but, anytime he completes 60% of his passes and we come out with a W... I'll take that." said Coach Kyle. "We've still got a lot of work to do to reach our goal of a Big Ten Championship... but I think we're on the right track."

Next week the Huskers travel to Champaign, Illinois to face off agains the Fighting Illini. Game will be a regional broadcast. Kickoff is set for 12:30 PM.

The get their biggest win of the season so far against the Fighting Illini. The offense hit on all cylinders and the defense didn't allow much of anything. Fans got a scare when (QB) Taylor Martinez left the game with a shoulder injury but, X-Rays were negative and he should be good to go next week. Rex Burkhead was player of the game with 195 yrds rushing and 2 TD's. Next week #12 Nebraska travels to Madison, WI to face off against the #4 Wisconsin Badgers. KIckoff is set for 1 PM.
