    Recruiting

Going into the 2011 season, an experienced Vols team has three holes to fill. Cornerback, Quarterback and Middle Linebacker.

Matt Simms, at quarterback, will leave after this year's season campaign. Although it may not be a favorable one for him. You may remember he helped the Vols reach the SEC Championship game, and reach a 10-4 record. But young upstart Tyler Bray took his place after Pre-season Training.

Although Junior Herman Lathers holds down the MILB1 position, Senior Austin Johnson will graduate this year, leaving a pretty big hole in an experienced squad. Johnson will still garner a lot of playing time, but in his last year of eligibility, he'll need to be replaced.

Art Evans, Anthony Anderson, Dave Clark and CJ Fleming are all great corners. In fact, they're all, respectively, the first through fourth best cornerbacks on the team. But all are seniors, and if the Vols hope to have a defense as stingy as last years in 2012, they'll need some great recruits to help Eric Gordon and company next year.

    Week 1

Before Tennessee would take the field against Wake Forest in Week 1, Coach Webb and company would learn that next year Middle Linebacker Jerry Long would be attending school at UT. Long, a 6'2, 232 MLB, fills one of the holes this year in recruiting already, and looks to be a long-term answer and long-term foe of opposing offenses.

Week 1 - Vols allow Wake Forest victory after costly mistakes

It didn't take long for the Tennessee offense to pick up where they last left off, a 10-4 season, led by Matt Simms. Although Senior QB Matt Simms wouldn't play this game, instead Sophomore Tyler Bray would get the start after waiting for his turn last year.

After scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter, the Vols offense looked to be on a roll. But consistency was the name of the game for Wake Forest. Running Back Brandon Pendergrass was electric, and couldn't be stopped. In the first three quarters, the Wake Forest offense accomplished a touchdown. That seemingly high-powered Vols offense, well, wouldn't score again until the final seconds of the third quarter. Good enough to be behind, 21-17.

Wake Forest's first field goal of the game would put them up 24-17 with nearly 4 minutes remaining. The Vols struggled, but eventually found the end-zone with 54 seconds remaining. 24-24 with overtime being inevitable.

    Not so fast my friend.

Deacs' Chris Givens would return the kickoff for 99 yards and a touchdown, advantage Wake Forest. With 42 seconds remaining though, the Vols offense still had a chance.

    Not so fast my friend.

Freshman return man Zachary Miller would make the first mistake of his young career when fumbling the ensuing kickoff. That would be it for the Vols, after allowing another quick touchdown, losing this one 38-24.
