    2012 Cyclone

    2012 Cyclone Preview

2011 Season in Review: The Cyclones are coming off their best year of college football losing one game while winning the Big XII Championship and a BCS Bowl (Fiesta). Losing QB Joe Tiller and WR Paul Mulcahny will hurt 2012 chances as these two players accounted for mobility and a deep threat.

    Expectations:
    1) Defend the Big XII Title
    2) Move up another prestige
    3) Projected Record 9-3

    Team Strengths:
The Cyclones strength will rely on the ground game this year and being able to open up the passing game. There is limited amount of skill and for them to be successful they will rely on Coach Knight's strategy and skill (sticks).

    Team Weaknesses:
Cyclones have a new QB to break in, who has only thrown 14 career attempts and is not very mobile. The WR corps is rated 77 and below with fastest at 86. Most of the defense is very vulnerable besides the two All-Americans in the secondary which are still rated 78.

    Key Losses:
    QB Joe Tiller
    WR Paul Mulchany

    Key Returners:
    MLB Austin Moore
    ROLB Darrick Heinz
    FS Lamar Thompson
    SS Josh Washington

    Recruiting focus for this year:
    1) Depth
    2) Diamonds in the rough

    Biggest game on your schedule:
The team that is on our schedule for the current week.
    1) Clemson- Important to make a statement and find out what kind of team we are.
    2) Miami- should be outclassed
    3) Oklahoma State- 1st Big XII Conference Game
    4) Tennessee- SEC team that is pretty loaded with talent

Iowa State began the 2012 campaign with a good start and defeat #12 Rutgers. The offense played well with a balanced attack and the defense played superb, not allowing any points and just under 130 yards of total offense.

Cyclones use late drive to win at Clemson

Wins do not come easy in Death Valley, home of the Clemson Tigers. Fast forward late in the 4th quarter, Iowa State just made a great defensive stand inside the 5 yard line turn back Clemson from taking the lead. The first play of the clock killing drive saw the Cyclone back get 10 yards and then crushed at 12 yard line and fumbles the ball, Clemson picks it up. Iowa State sending their defense back onto the field came 1 play away from turning away Clemson again but Kyle Parker would scramble into the endzone for a 24-21 lead with 1:07 remaining.

The Cyclones then put the game on the shoulders of QB James Capello who at the point threw 0 TDs and 4 INTs. He seemingly took the Clones down the field and hit Tillman for a 6 yard TD pass with 0:10 left and the game winner, 28-24.

Cyclones pull a W out of there butt, beats OK ST

Fast forward with a minute change left in the 4th quarter, Hammerschmidt ISU FB punches in the game tying TD with 1:14 left leaving plenty of time for the Cowboys. Oklahoma State gave the ball to Pratt on the first play and he scampered near midfield, second play he was stuffed for a 2 yard loss and the Cowboys elected to go 5 wide. Wade hit an open receiver and as he turned up field SS Washington laid the lumber and he coughed up the ball as the Cyclones recovered. Iowa State under control would drive to the 26 with 0:03 left the kicker came out onto the field and was iced, but knocked it through as time expired.
