2012 Penn State Nittany Lions Season Preview

    2011 Record: (13-0, 8-0)
2011 Bowl: BCS Championship vs USC (W)

Coach: Coach Hokie Effect (35-4 at PSU)

    Returning Leaders
Rushing: SR Brandon Beachum, 309 yds 5 TD
Passing: SO Jonathan Johnson, 1240 yds 9 TD
Receiving: SR AJ Price, 64 rec 1221 yds 9 TD; SR Devon Smith 62 rec 155 11 TD
Tackles: JR Gary Berry CB, 86tkls
Sacks: SR Jack Crawford DE, 10 sacks
Interceptions: JR Darrell Givens CB, 5 INT

The 2011 season was a season to remember. Penn State put together one of the most dominating seasons in OFFL-W history. The team was known for its intimidating D and balanced but deadly O. Penn State ran tore through thier schedule and when faced against user opponents outscored the opposition 131-38. Expect the Nittany Lion "Dynasty" to continue in 2012.

    SO Jonathan Johnson (85ovr, 86thp, 87tha)
    SR Matthew McGloin (87ovr, 89thp, 89tha)

The coaches favor Johnson because of his mobility, but McGloin has worked very hard in the offseason to make this a QB battle. Expect the starter to be on a short leash.

    RB- SR Brandon Beachum (94ovr, 91spd, 96acc, 96btk)
    RB- JR Curtis Dukes (90ovr, 90spd, 95acc, 94btk)
    FB- FR Raymond Smith (74ovr)

Expect the Nittany Lions to be a run first pass second team this year until the QB position proves itself. Beachum should be the workhorse, but Dukes should see some quality playing time as well.

WR- JR Justin Brown (95ovr, 96spd)
    WR- SR Devon Smith (93ovr, 98spd, 99acc)
    WR- SR AJ Price (90ovr)
    TE- SR Mark Wedderburn (89ovr)

A solid recieving corp should help provide a balance attack this year. Look for the speedster Smith to be the big playmaker this year.

    LT- JR Eric Shrive (91ovr)
    LG- SO Patrick Harris (86ovr)
    C- JR Ty Howle (92ovr)
    RG- SO Atari Harris (87ovr)
    RT- SR Matt Stankiewitch (95ovr)

Overall not the best o-line Penn State has assembled, but should provide holes big enough for the RB's to make plays.

DE- SR Jack Crawford (99ovr, 88spd)
DE- SR Pete Massaro (89ovr, 80spd)
    DT- JR Jordan Hill (97ovr)
    DT- JR Chance Raymond (91ovr)

This will be the Nittany Lions strong suit. Crawford is a super star. If the front 4 can provide pressure on its own expect big things on D.

    OLB- SR Michael Yanich (89ovr)
OLB- SR Michael Zordich (84 ovr)
    MLB- SO Justin Coleman (89ovr)

Not the studs we are used to at the LB position here at Penn State with 3 new starters. Coleman is expected to be the next great Nittany Lion LB.

    CB- JR Darrell Givens (96ovr, 93mcv, 95zcv)
CB- JR Gary Berry (91ovr, 96spd)
    FS- JR Gerald Hodges (93ovr)
    SS- FR Victor Williams (82ovr)
    SS- FR Darrell Johnson (80ovr)

Experiance and speed for the most part in this years secondary. Givens, Berry, and Hodges were all AA last year. The one question is at the SS position starting 2 FR in the 4-2-5 set.

    K- FR John Grant (76ovr)
    P- FR Damon Everett (73ovr)

Both kicker and punter are FR this year. Enough said.

KR- SR Devon Smith (99ovr, 98spd)
KR- JR Gary Berry (91ovr, 96spd)
PR- SR Devon Smith (99ovr, 98spd)

Put your fastest guys in open space and cross your fingers.

The overall outlook for the 2012 Nittany Lions looks good despite a few question marks. Expect the offense to play a safe ball control style and let their defense make their mark. If the QB position develops, Penn State will be in BCS talks at the end of the year.

    Akron- 22

Penn State was able to shake off a pesky Akron team bidding for an upset win over the defending BCS Champs. The Nittany Lions looked shaky in the first half led by Jonathan Johnson who started the game throwing the ball well and leading the Nittany Lions to 2 successful TD drives. But then Johnson got hit with the turnover bug throwing 2 picks. Taking a 17-15 lead into half, the Nittany Lions opened the second half with Matt McGloin who performed very well and might have won him the starting QB job. McGloin was 14/20 205yds 3 TD in the second half to pace Penn State. Heisman hopeful Devon Smith had 7 rec 145yds 3 TD. Brandon Beacham was carried the load with 83yds 3TD, but only avg 3yd a carry. Jack Crawford led the defense with 7tkl and 2 sacks but as a unit the play was inconsitant. Penn State will have to bring their "A" if they want to compete next week when they host the #1 Texas Longhorns.

    #1 Texas- 36
    #2 Penn State- 21

The Texas ground game and turnovers proved too much for the Nittany Lions as they lose a heartbreaker at home. The Nittany Lions outgained the Longhorns 349-222, but early turnovers and a early lead left Penn State 1 demensional in teh second half and the QB play of teh Nittany Lions was very inconsistent.

Turning point of the game: Down 10-0 in the second quarter Devon Smith scores on a 78yd rec. to cut the lead to 10-7 with a slight momentum swing.

On the ensuing kickoff the Longhorns run it back for the score to go up 17-7. On Penn State's next drive they throw a careless INT that is returned for a TD. Penn State now goes into half down 24-7 and never had a chance in the second half. The Longhorns grind out the second half on there way to victory.

    Minnesota- 35

Penn State was still hungover after losing their previous 2 games and struggled with Minnesota as the Golphers jumped out to a 35-16 halftime lead. The Nittany Lions can't find an answer at QB as the duo threw 6 picks. Penn State's running game is nonexsistent and the defense looks tired. This will be a long year if the Nittany Lions can't regroup as they enter Big 10 play.

    Wisconsin- 31

The Nittany Lions survived OT with a pick 6 by Jack Crawford to survive a Big 10 scare from the Badgers. Penn State had successful day in the air as Matt McGloin threw for 394yds 4 TD and only 1 INT. Devon Smith continued his Heisman campaign with 165tds 1 TD. The defense struggled giving up big plays, but were able to force 2 TO's and hold Wisconsin to 30% on 3rd Down.

    Purdue- 14

The Nittany Lions finally made an impressive performance on the field on both sides of the ball. Penn State outgained Purdue 493yds-203yds. They were led by Matt McGloin's breakout game with 428yds 5 TD performance. Devon Smith added to his heisman numbers with 152yds 3TD. AJ Price was the other go to WR with 120yds 1 TD. Penn State heads into their bye with with some much needed momentum.

    Iowa- 13

The Nittany Lions fought off the Hawkeyes attempt of a 4th quarter comeback to extend their win streak to 4. Penn State is still unable to establish a running game, but McGloin was able to throw for 339yds 2 TD. His 3 INT's almost cost Penn State a victory. Devon Smith played well with 181yds 2 TD receiving as he paces the Heisman race. Next up for Penn State is a very good Ohio State team. The winner of this game will more than likely win the Big 10 title.

    Ohio State- 28

I guess it is better to be lucky than good. Ohio State was the far better team today especially the first half. Ohio State moved the ball at ease going up 21-0 at half. Penn State lost their QB to injury in the 1st quarter and with their 3rd string QB, struggled with only 42yds of offense at half. The second half was a different and interesting story. Ohio State received the ball second half and went 3 and out. Penn State drove the ball with a sense of urgency to cut the lead to 21-7. Ohio State would answer back with a drive into Penn State territory, but the Nittany Lions D stepped up with a 91yd pick 6 as Rhoden tried to force a ball to the freshman sensation James Jackson (i shadowed him almost every play i think) to cut the lead 21-14 and gain some much needed momentum. The Buckeyes would answer back with a score to push the lead to 28-14, but on the ensueing kickoff Devon Smith returned it for a TD, 28-21. This was an obvious turning point in the game and Penn State never looked back. The Nittany Lions were able to put together 2 more drives to go up 35-28. The game winning TD with 33 seconds left was actually bobbled to make this game even more dramatic.

On a side note the weather was horrible rainy and with mystery wind. The flags said 1-2 mph but every kickoff was short in both directions and neither of us could make chippy FG's.

    Indiana- 38

Penn State had a huge scare as Indiana played for the the upset. Down 31-7 at half the Nittany Lions suffered from early turnovers, special team TD, and big plays by IU. Led behind the arm of McGloin who threw for a school record 597yds 3 TD, Penn State was able to claw their way back and prevail with a narrow victory. Smith put up big numbers again with 230yds 2 TD, Brown and Wedderburn also eclipsed the 100yd rec mark. This victory clinches Penn State's second consectutive Big 10 title and 3 in 4 years. Dynasty?!?!?

Penn State jumped to an early 21-3 lead with an opening KR TD by Devon Smith and a pick 6 on the next possesion. The story of the game was the Nittany Lions rushing offense led by Robert Beachem who had a career high 239yds 3 TD. Devon Smith only played 1 half due to injury but the damage was already done. Penn State heads into the Rose Bowl with a full head of steam
