This will be updated again once the actual season begins and I will add user drops once we get around that time.

I also highlighted some of the bigger name players and/or the best unknowns to make browsing the list a little easier.

Lets all agree this class is ridiculous!

    Rule 5 Preview

    Jacoby Ellsbury

    Position: Centerfielder
    Bats: Left, Throws: Left
    Height: 6' 1", Weight: 185 lb.
Born: September 11, 1983 in Madras, OR
    High School: Madras (Madras, OR)
Drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 1st round (23rd pick) of the 2005 amateur draft.
Signed July 1, 2005. (All Transactions)
    Team: RedSox 2007-2011
    2012 Contract Status: Signed thru 2011, 1 yr/$2.4M (11)
    2011 stats

    .290

    3 HR

    14 RBI

    DID's Take

Ellsbury is a force. Here is a guy that will be able to patrol center field for the next 5-6 years barring any injury. He has unlimited range and sees the ball well off the bat. He has a very good arm, but his ability to get from gap to gap is his real value defensively.

At the plate he has is a guy that will consistently hit in the .290-.300 range. He gives you a lead off hitter and is a constant threat steal. he has had seasons where he has swiped 50 and 70 bases. He has never hit more than 10 HR's in a season. So power is not his virtue. He can score a ton of runs if you have a line up to bring him around behind him.

Look for Ellsbury to be a top 5 selection in the rule 5 draft.

    John Lester

    Position: Pitcher
    Bats: Left, Throws: Left
    Height: 6' 4", Weight: 240 lb.
Born: January 7, 1984 in Tacoma, WA (Age 28)
High School: Bellarmine Prep (Tacoma, WA)
Drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 2nd round of the 2002 amateur draft.
Signed August 13, 2002. (All Transactions)
    Team: RedSox 2006-2011

    2011 Stats
    3-1
    2 CG
    2 SHO
    11.95 K/9
    4.54 ERA

    Did's Take
Lester very well may be the first selection of the rule 5 draft. Lester is a top flight pitcher. He currently has an ERA under 1 in the 2012 season. He has overcome a lot and is truly a remarkable human being. At 28 years old he has 4-5 years of top shelf pitching left. Lester has a live arm and has developed a great change up and cutter. If he doesn't go with the first pick, don't expect him to get past the third.

    Michael Saunders

    Position: Outfield

    Bats: Left, Throws: Right

    Height: 6' 4", Weight: 225 lb.

Born: November 19, 1986 in Victoria, BC, Canada (Age 25)

    College: Tallahassee Community College

Drafted: by the Seattle Mariners in the 11th round of the 2004 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.

    Major League Debut:July 25, 2009

    Team: Mariners 2009-2012

    2011 Stats:
Spent ALL OF 2011 in Triple-A Tacoma for the Mariners

    MG's Take:

Saunders is one of the many players in this years draft with a very high ceiling. One thing that will hurt his draft stock is he did not get any major league at-bats last season, and right now he is sitting in Triple-A all of this season as well. So, despite having a high ceiling, he is not getting a chance to progress in a major league setting and it is stunting his growth a bit. He also needs to get in the weight room and work on his power, as right now he does not possess the pop you would want in a corner outfielder. One thing going for Saunders is that he bats left-handed, and that makes him very interesting for scouts. I expect him to go somwhere in the mid-to-late second round or very early in the third.

    Chris V. Carter

    Position: 1B/Outfield

    Bats: Right Throws: Right

    Height: 6' 5" Weight: 230 lb

Born: December 18, 1986 in Redwood City, California (Age 25)

    High School: Sierra Vista High

Drafted: by the Chicago White Sox in the 15th round of the 2005 Major League Amateur Draft

Major League Debut: August 9, 2010

    Team: Oakland Athletics 2007-2012

    2011 Stats:
Carter only had 1 at-bat last season and spent the rest of the time in Triple-A Stockton.

    MG's Take:

Carter is undoubtedly the best 1B prospect in this draft. With his power and size, he can easily be one of the top home run hitters in the league if he continues to progress, and should immediately contribute to a team. His glove is decent enough and he also brings versatility with the ability to play outfield as well. Carter will go in the 1st round, and I would be shocked if it wasn't in the first half of the first round. This guy is the real deal Holyfield.

    Scott Kazmir
    [IMG]

    Position: Pitcher

    Bats:Left Throws:Left

    Height: 6' 0", Weight: 190lb.

Born: January 24, 1984 in Houston, Texas (Age 28)

    High School: Cypress Falls High

Drafted: by the New York Mets in the 1st round of the 2002 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.

Major League Debut: August 23, 2004

    Team: Angels 2009-2012

    2011 Stats:
    3 Wins 1 Loss
    4.50 ERA
    28 Innings Pitched

    MG's Take:

Perhaps the best left hander in the draft, Kazmir has all the potential to be a great #2 pitcher in any rotation. Although he does not quite have the stuff to be a true ace, this guy can jump into any rotation in baseball and make an impact. Kazmir has had injury problems in the past, so buyer be ware. He gained 50 progression points last season, and is projected to have 50 more this year. The fact that Kazmir is still improving is a very good sign for the would-be team that drafts him. He will be a first round selection, look for him to be drafted somewhere in the 12-25 pick range depending on team needs.

    Colby Rasmus

    Position: Centerfielder
    Bats: Left, Throws: Left
    Height: 6' 2", Weight: 200 lb.
Born: August 11, 1986 in Columbus, GA (Age 25)
High School: Russell County (Seale, AL)
Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1st round (28th pick) of the 2005 amateur draft.
Signed June 10, 2005. (All Transactions)

    Did's Take

The Cards are going to hate losing Rasmus to the Rule 5 Draft. His range and glove in CF is top 5 in the MLB. At age 25 he has plenty of time to become more consistent at the dish. He has the speed to be a top 10 guy is Stolen bases. A team that needs a lead off guy and a defensive superstar in their OF should look no further than Rasmus.
