2012 Virginia Tech Hokies Season Preview

    2011 Record: (7-6, 4-4)
2011 Bowl: Music City vs Arkansas (W)
Coach: Coach Hokie Effect (30-11 at VT)

    Returning Leaders
Rushing: SR Sweetness, 762 yds 10 TD
Passing: SR Ju Ju Clayton, 4003 yds 24 TD
Receiving: SR Xavier Boyce, 46 rec 838 yds 2 TD
Tackles: SR Lorenzo Williams FS, 78tkls
Sacks: SO Jim Young DT, 8 sacks
Interceptions: JR Jayron Hosley CB, 3 INT

2011 was definately a season to forget. The Hokies who dominated the ACC their first 2 years struggled against both user and cpu teams. With a pass happy offense the team seemed very one dementional and had struggled playing consistantly on the offensive side of the ball. Hampered with injuries and the inability to protect the ball made for a heartfelt season. After a strong recruiting class and returning several key players on both sides of the ball, the Hokies looked to get back to their winning ways in 2012.

    STARTING QB
    SR Ju Ju Clayton (91ovr, 86thp, 89thp)
    JR Antone Exum (91ovr, 90spd, 86tha, 90thp)

After getting some quality playing time last season due to injuries to Clayton and a hard working offseason, Exum will compete for the starting postion despite Claytons prroduction the past 2 seasons.

    STARTING BACKFIELD
    RB- SR Sweetness (99ovr, 96spd, 99acc)
    RB- JR David Wilson (94ovr, 94spd, 99acc)
    FB- JR Everett Crowell (79ovr)

This will be the Hokies strong suit this year. Expect alot of carries from Sweetness and Wilson. With an opposite approach this year focusing on the running game, QB Exum will likely get some carries as well running the option offense.

    STARTING RECEIVERS
WR- SR Dyrell Roberts (97ovr, 96spd)
    WR- SR Xavier Boyce (94ovr)
    WR- JR DJ Coles (92ovr)
    TE- JR Logan Thomas (92ovr)

A solid recieving corp should help provide a balance attack this year. TE Logan Thomas might emerge as a star this year.

    STARTING O-LINE
    LT- JR Andrew Miller (85ovr)
    LG- SR Vinston Painter (96ovr)
    C- SR Michael Via (97ovr)
    RG- SO Kevin Drew (83ovr)
    RT- SR Nick Becton (95ovr)

Overall not the best o-line the Hokies have assembled, but should provide holes big enough for the RB's to make plays.

    STARTING D-LINE
DE- JR James Gayle (85ovr, 85spd)
DE- SR Joe Jones (89ovr, 82spd)
    DT- SO Jim Young (91ovr)
    DT- SR Antoine Hopkins (89ovr)

Very inexperianced d-line, a healthy dose of blitzing may be needed if the front 3/4 can not provide pressure on its own.

    STARTING LB
    OLB- SR Jake Johnson (93ovr)
OLB- JR Tariq Edwards (89 ovr)
    MLB- SR Bruce Taylor (96ovr)

SR Bruce Taylor finally will get his chance to shine as 3 year starter Barquell rivers moves on. This years LB will provide the working man's attitude.

    STARTING DB
    CB- SR Eddie Whitley (92ovr)
    CB- JR Jayron Hosley (89ovr)
    FS- SR Lorenzo Williams (90ovr)
    SS- SO Zach Horn (84ovr)
    SS- SO Aaron Melton (82ovr)

This years DB will have to grow up quickly, as the pass defense has always been a weak point in years past. Inexperiance at the SS position may cause problems under VT's defensive scheme.

    SPECIAL TEAMS
    K- JR Gerard Gunn (84ovr)
    P- JR Rico Gunn (83ovr)

The Gunn twins were both under some heat last year with lack of leg strength. Lets hop all those squats paid off during the offseason.

    KR- SR Sweetness (99ovr, 96spd)
KR- SR Dyrell Roberts (99ovr, 96spd)
PR- SR Dyrell Roberts (99ovr, 96spd)

Put your fastest guys in open space and cross your fingers. Lets hope the move to KR will not provide more opportunities for injury for Sweetness.

The overall outlook for the 2012 is unexpected. There has been some shake up on the coaching staff after last years dissapointing season. Expect some new Offensive and Defensive schemes this year. So with the inexperiance at many of the positions on both sides of the ball and a new style of play, this year could go in either direction. Coach Hokie is hoping his gamble pays off and VT will be sitting atop of the college polls in 2012.

    VT vs LSU
    W38-35

Va Tech was not the better team today, but the saying is its better to be lucky than good. VT's new option offense caused problems for LSU all day and were able to rack up 324yds on the ground led by Sweetness 188yds 1 TD and David Wilson 122yds 2 TD. QB Antone Exum who runs the new offense was injured early and will be out 2 weeks. Ju Ju Clayton stepped in and led the Hokies to victory.

LSU's offense was unstoppable and Russel Sheppard commanded a balance attack that moved the chains throughout the game. LSU led most of the game and was attempting a late FG to go up by 7, but fell short. Ju Ju Clayton drove the Hokies and hit Logan Thomas with 15 seconds left for the final score.

The Hokies have a long way to go Defensively if they want to compete for the ACC title again, or lets hope that luck is on their side the rest of the year. Great Game ShortBus, you deserved it.

That was a sick run by sweetness. You should definitely send that in for plays of the month.

    VT vs GT
    W21-14

The Hokies did not play very well today, but won an ugly game vs GT. The Yellowjackets stimied the option offense for most of the day and Tech couldn't get the passing game going. The QB's combined for 3-15 60yds 2 INT. The Hokies ground game was lead again by Sweetness 219yds 2 TD, Wilson chipped in with 50yds. The coaching staff decided to let Marcus Davis run the option offense today, but was ineffective with only 20yds 1 TD on 15 car. If Exum isn't healthy for next weeks game expect Clayton to agian take the majority of the snaps. The defense again looked vulnerable, but only gave up 284yds and holding the Yellowjackets to 2-13 on 3rd down. The Hokies face a tough Michigan team next and will have to play better if they want to continue their winning streak.

With Antone Exum healthy the Hokies ran their potent option offense to perfection, accumulating 430yds on the ground. Exum had 190yds 2 TD, Sweetness 182yds 5 TD, and Wilson 45yds. Exum also threw the ball effeciently completing all 5 off his passes. The Hokies did have trouble holding onto the ball fumbling 4 times and Clayton threw a INT trying to run the 2 minute offense before half. If Exum stays healthy and the offense can hold on to the ball expect Virginia Tech to challenge for the ACC crown.

Virginia Tech broke away from what was a close game in the first half to outrun the Blue Devils. The new option offense is picking up stride as the Hokies gained 486yds on the ground. Sweetness led the way with 258yds 3 TD, Exum 148yds 2 TD, and Wilson 72yds 2 TD. The Hokies defense is still giving up big yards, especially in the air. Of Duke's 351 total yards, 298 was from the passing game. Virginia Tech faces 3 pivital ACC user games in a row, starting with UNC. This will be a true test to see how competitive the Hokies really can be.

The Hokies D finally showed up holding the Tarheels to 197yds, 3-8 on 3rd down, and causing 3 turnovers. Virginia Tech's dominant ground game continued churning out 345yds. David Wilson led the way with 134yds 2 TD, Sweetness added 107yds, and Antone Exum chipped in with 95yds 2 TD. Exum showed off his arm early completing a 56yd TD pass to Dyrell Roberts on the Hokies opening drive to set the tone. Virginia Tech's D was a bend but don't break this afternoon, not giving up the big play and stopping the Heels on 3rd down. The Hokies take the early lead in the Coastal division. The Hokies face an underated Florida State team next.

Maybe there were too many distractions this week. The Hokies offense has been scrutinized in the media this week and this was a trap game with many already talking about the matchup with #2 Clemson next week. This is why you play the game.

Virginia Tech looked good scoring on its first 2 drives, the second being a 74yd strike from Antone Exum to Dyrell Roberts. But Virginia Tech's option offense was non-exsistent after the opening drive. Florida State picked off a pitch and returned it for 6. That would set the tone against the usually potent option offense. After being tied after the 1st, Virginia Tech was helped out with a short field from 3 turnovers but had to settle for 3 FG's which would undoubtably be the difference.

The Hokies carried a slim 23-21 lead going into the 4th, but could not stop the Seminoles ground game and giving up 2 big TD runs by Lonnie Pryor of 59yd and 61yd. Florida State scored 17 unanswered points in the 4th to pull off the upset.

I will let Beazus do the honors. But play of the game had to be early in 3rd, I just stopped Clemson for the 2nd time in a row and was down 28-14 with the ball on my 15yd line. I throw a fade to Dyrell Roberts who has his man beat by 5yds, but drops the sure TD. The next play I throw a pick 6. Game went from 28-21 with momentum in Techs favor to 35-14 and game over.

I am calling it now and hopefully I don't jinx Beazus, but he will win the BCS title this year.

    My one highlight:

Fade to Roberts in double coverage.

At least the option offense works against the cpu. After 2 consecutive weeks of offensive struggles against user opponents, the Hokies option offense was once again dominant and put up impressive numbers. Virginia Tech totaled 683yds with 520yds of it on the ground. Backup RB David Wilson proved there will be life after Sweetness with 230yds 5 TD. Anotne Exum added 115yds 1 TD and Jeff Bell 89yds 1 TD. Exum also threw for a season high 129yds 1 TD. The Tech defense played well only allowing 1 redzone drive but still gave up some big plays. The Hokies confidence is high as they must win out and hope for some help as their ACCCG birth is still alive.

First who put the injury code in. Just lost Wilson for 4 weeks. had to take a redshirt off my 4th string runningback and put a WR in the backfield to run my offense. Oh well still managed to put up 334yds on the ground and 243yds in the air. Antone Exum led the attack with 165yds 4 TD on theground and another 99yds in the air. Clayton threw for 144yds 1 TD establishing himself as the most prolific passer in VT history. The defense again is prone to giving up the big play, but they were able to pressure the QB a record 5 sacks. Up next for the Hokies is a tune up game with Tulsa before they play their instate rival UVA. Sweetness is expected to be healthy next week, but will he be reinstated by the coaches???

Good game for Sweetness to return from injury to as he put up 209yds 6 TD rushing and another 68yds rec. Virginia Tech outgained Tulsa 666yds to 209yds with 537yds of it on the ground. Anotne Exum had a good day with 168yd 1 TD. Ju Ju Clayton ran the option offense in the second half with 83yds 2 TD on the ground. The defense finally showed up today with 6 sacks and 6 INT's. Not much of a game, my punter actually had to punt it 4 times on Tulsa's goaline in the 4th to stay under the 70 point cap, so his -2.8avg is a little misleading. This was a good warm up as the Hokies host their in state rival UVA next week.

Unfortunately the Hokies had to play a UVA team without their head coach and that may have well been the difference. VT outgained UVA 554yds to 287yds. The Hokies played a balance game with 281yds on the ground, Sweetness with 116yds 3 TD and Exum with 112yds 1 TD, and Clayton and Exum combined for 273yds 2 TD in the air. This win puts VT back in the ACCCG, featuring a rematch with #1 Clemson. The Hokies will play Kansas State next week as they look to keep momentum into the ACCCG.

Virginia Tech finishes the regular season on a high note as they punish Kansas State. The Hokies again had a much more balanced attack as they threw for 288yds and ran for 226yds. Sweetness ran for 110yds 4TD on only 14 carries as he and the rest of the 1st team offense sat the entire second half as they try to stay healthy for the ACCCG.
