Welcome fellow TSO-ers and Second to None crew to Season Two! Some late season drama and story lines carry over from the first season, the LSU-ND-FSU saga, Illinois--Coach Trev and UNC-- Coach KRT downplaying their skills and teams hoping to lull us to sleep, Miss State-- Coach Broth thinking he is up with the SEC Power teams, he is very close though! While South Carolina-- Chance and Michigan-- Redwings fly under the radar along with a very talented Georgia team with Coach III. Then we have an unknown with first year coach at Miami-- MarkyMark.

Let us look at our week 1 match ups:

    National Game of the Week
    Saturday August 31, 2013 3:30 PM
    [IMG][IMG]
    #1 @ #4
Tallahassee, FL-- The Seminoles have all the pressure riding on them as they try to right the ship from last years embarrassing showing in South Bend, while Notre Dame comes off a National Championship and squeezing FSU out of the Title birth. Notre Dame has A+ across the board while FSU is an A+ overall but A offense/defense.

Defensive Battle leads to Cornhuskers 4th quarter rally
    [IMG]
Aaron Green punches in the winning TD.

We thought we had saw the end of this rivalry in the 2010 Big XII title game when Oklahoma came away with a 3-point victory. When head coach Justin White came to Lincoln though, his first request is that they get this game back on the schedule. Today was that day, and under pouring conditions at Memorial Stadium, the two teams played a classic that led to a 23-19 Nebraska victory.
Defense was the name of the game, with 5 turnovers between the teams. The rain caused security problems for both teams, as they fumbled 6 times total. The rain didn't stop the Nebraska passing game, as Taylor Martinez (who stepped in for an injured Brion Carnes) threw for 286 yards and 2 TDs. Martinez almost blew the game though, as his 2nd INT led to a Oklahoma TD to put them up 19-10 midway through the 4th.
Nebraska didn't let that hurt them, as they came back 3 plays later and Martinez found freshman Brandon Jones deep for a 59 yd TD to make it 19-17. Nebraska's defense stepped up, and a great punt return by Ameer Abdullah (who rushed for 76 yds on 14 carries) set the Huskers up with good field position. Calm as they could be, Nebraska drove the rest of the way and Aaron Green punched it in to make it 23-19. The Blackshirts came out and held Oklahoma to a turnover on downs and that was the game.
Everything didn't turn out well for Nebraska, as WR Kenny Bell (who had 147 yds receiving and a TD) tore his shoulder and will be out for at least 6 weeks.

Chapel Hill, NC- Opening weekend was a good time for all Tarheel fans around North Carolina! The player of the game was Giovani Bernard who had a receiving and a rushing touchdown. He had 152 yards on 28 rushing attempts along with 2 catches for 39 yards. Renner had an okay game but had two interception. He also had 2 touchdowns and 255 yares on 14/21 passing. Aaron baker was the other wide out with the touchdown from a 48 yard bomb! TJ Thorpe had three catches for 65 yards. The defensive star of the game was cornerback Tim Scott with two interceptions and a touchdown from a recovered fumble, but it got overturned. Next week the Fighting Illini come to town and take on Chapel Hill!

Illini Start New Era With Upset Victory
    [IMG][IMG]
    Illinois 49 -- Washington 30
The new era of Illinois football began with a bang this week. The Fighting Illini upset the #15 Washington Huskies by a score of 49-30 in a wild, offensive showdown.
QB Nathan Scheelhaase's first pass attempt was picked off and returned for a touchdown, leading to many groans from the crowd. After that point the senior went on to play very well, going 12-17 for 204 yards 1 td 1 int.
The real star of the offense was true freshman Cory Wood. Both of the top-two running backs on Illinois's depth chart (Young and Ferguson) went down with injuries so the youngster had to step up in his first collegiate game. He was able to gain 94 yards on 12 carries while scoring 3 touchdowns and picking up large chucks of yardage after contact.
Defensively the Illini were led by star senior MLB Jonathan Brown who recorded 13 tackles, 4 tfl, and 2 sacks. Prized recruit Adam Grimes landed the first two sacks of his career as well.

Although sloppy, the Wolverines got the win in their first of two trips to Pasadena this season. A new offense relied solely on the run game and two defense touchdowns were the difference.

This one was too close for comfort. The offense was executing well, but the passing precision was erratic for Connor Shaw, who was rattled under pressure constantly from an aggressive linebacking corps. Marcus Lattimore was the brightest star, earning player of the game honors with a 200 yd, 2 TD performance. The game was almost lost to turnovers, as the Gamecocks look eerily similar to last year with a TO margin of -2. The defense was not able to slow down the aggressive no-huddle offense used by ASU and the game became a shootout. South Carolina forced some punts in the 4th and drove the ball down the field with a number of ball carriers on the last possession to get in position for a 27 yd field goal. Landon Ard, the sophomore who was a semifinalist for the Groza last season, remains perfect for his career in both field goals and extra points after clinching the game in the closing seconds. The Gamecocks look forward to their first home game of the season against East Carolina next week.

I can play later in the evening. I'm moving into my new place tomorrow after work which will probably be around 6:00. I can unpack the TV and PS3 before everything else, then unpack the rest after we play.

    Solid Win for Coach Cast

The dangerous Ford leads LSU to a victory over Texas Tech.
LSU you came out like a house on fire scoring early and often jumping to a 42-10 halftime lead, from there they would put it in cruise control to pick up the easy victory. Mike Ford would steal the thunder away from last year's Heisman winner Spencer Ware as Ford would rush for 115 yds and have 2 punt returns for TD's, an 83 yarder and a 56 yarder. Ware would still get his even tho he sat out the 2nd half as he would rush for 88 yards on 10 carries and get 2 TD's. QB Zach Mettenberger was efficient threw 2 TD passes and had 0 INT's. The defense despite giving up almost 400 yards through the air had 11 sacks and 1 INT that they returned for a TD. Next up LSU has a bye week.
Spencer Ware HB #11 58 yard rush for a TD
Craig Loston SS #6 23 yard INT return for a TD
Michael Ford HB #42 56 yard Punt Return for a TD

    They'll Take It!
Florida State starts off the 2013 season with a close win over Notre Dame
    [IMG][IMG]

Telvin Smith stopped and started the comeback rally with this interception in the redzone.

Tallahassee, FL-- In a rain soak late August, early September afternoon it was expected. A game where Notre Dame had complete control except for thier quarterback's inability to throw a good pass a few times. A stalemate first quarter then turned into a 14-3 lead in the second quarter for the Irish as they were able to convert two turnovers by the Noles into touchdowns.

A third quarter drive was the difference in this game, in which Notre Dame marched right down the field until Golson tried to force a throw to the flats which Telvin Smith intercepted the ball a few inches from the ground. The play didn't turn into points and the FSU drive didn't result in points but it kept ND from making it a three score game. After a punt, Golson tried to throw another ball to the flats this time Karlos Williams did convert it into six, cutting the lead to 4. Florida State was able to get the ball inside the 20 again and Devonta Freeman put them up by three with 6:12 remaining in the ball game. After a few more ND interceptions, Christain Jones would settle the game with a sack on fourth down giving the ball back to the Seminoles in which they ran out the clock.

    #9 @ #18

Lincoln, NE-- Coach brings in his new spread style offense and it didn't let him down in week 1, totaling 723 yards of offense! Nebraska's blackshirts will try to contain that, I don't believe they will be able to shut the Dawgs down. Nebraska must keep the time of possession and momentum in their favor at home, they can't settle into the pace of Georgia.

    [IMG][IMG]
    NR @ NR

Chapel Hill, NC-- Coach Trev in his second game as the Illini head coach, coming in at 1-0. We believe he is a year or two behind everyone else while Coach KRT has a pretty talented squad in the Carolina blue. Giovani Bernard leads the offense, a Heisman contender. Contender that needs to be fed the ball early and often. Only way Illinois stands a chance is with Bernard under 100.

    [IMG][IMG]
    #7 @ #17

Ann Arbor, MI-- A wounded defeated #1 National Champion coming off a loss in Tallahassee, in which they are left scratching the heads only allowing 96 total yards, and into their biggest rivalry game. Notre Dame sports the toughest defense in the nation but can be hampered by the ability of the offense to turn the ball over. If Notre Dame plays a close to perfect game on offense, this game will not be close and they can pretty much be unbeatable.

Connor Shaw had the performance of his career today. 11/16 for 237 yards through the air with 2 TDs and 0 INTs with another 65 yds on the ground and 2 rushing TDs. The ground game was not the focal point this game, as Coach Chance unleashed a more wide open passing attack in the 2nd quarter to the tune of 21 points. With the lead being 3 scores half-way through the third, a bevy of ball carriers and a freshman quarterback all made appearances (all 9 ball carriers average 5 or more yds/carry). The Gamecocks held the ball throughout the second half and the T.O.P battle was won 27:15 to 10:07.

For video highlights from these games, check out the team page when it is updated.

" We had a great showing on both sides of the ball today. Our running game was off the charts with K. Malcom, K Hogan, and K. Marshall all rushing for 100+ yards on the ground. The ground attack opened up the passing as well. Our spread offense worked to perfection. Defense was so stale in the first week and we wanted to make sure we had a better showing this week. B. Sailors played a solid game, it seemed that the game plan for Nebraska was to go after him and Sailors handled to pressure well with a total of 3 picks n the day. Also to note that true freshman B.Smith came up with 2 INTS, giving the defense 5 turnovers on the day. We were able to win the POSS battle and TURNOVER battle. Good showing today from the Dawgs."
