    2013 Hawkeye Report

    Iowa 44
    Wisc 21

Iowa dominated the Badgers early and often. Wisconsin decided to sell out against the run all game and they paid for it. Iowa QB Vandenburg's numbers weren't exceptional, but when the Hawkeye's needed a 1st down all they had to do was go to the air and it was easy pickings. Starting HB Brandon Wehger couldn't get anything going against the Wisconsin front 7, only managing 37 yards on 18 carries. He left in the 3rd quarter with an injury. His backup, Adam Robinson, picked up the slack and rumbled for 114 yards on 12 carries and 2 TDs. Coach JC has decided to go with the hot hand and Robinson will reclaim his starting spot that he lost two season's ago.

Iowa wins a defensive battle against a talented Penn State squad. PSU methodically drove down the field on the first possession of the game but, as has been the theme all season for the hawkeye's, PSU's drive was stalled in the redzone and they were forced to kick a field goal. Iowa would score a TD in quick fashion on their next drive, set up by a long run from Adam Robinson. Penn State would answer and then some, passing all over the Hawkeye defense on route to a 17-7 lead midway through the 2nd quarter. Typical of coach JC's career, Iowa would come storming back before the half ended. QB James Vandenburg orchestrated two long drives to tie the score and Iowa's defense finally got some pressure on PSU QB Kevin Newsome. Iowa managed to go into halftime at 17-17.

In the second half, Iowa was forced to punt on their first possession. PSU again drove all the way down the field but was again held to only a FG. Iowa did not score throughout the entire 3rd quarter as PSU took a 20-17 lead into the 4th. PSU would add another FG as their redzone woes continued with less than 3 minutes remaining in the game to go up 23-17. Iowa figured a long long TD drive as it's best chance at victory. They succeeded. Vandenburg connected on a number of clutch throws to keep the drive alive and Robinson tacked on the TD to finish the drive with about 45 seconds left in the game. PSU would try to get in FG range but Newsome was sacked on 2nd down and on third down a glitch caused him to toss the ball directly after the snap right to an Iowa defender. Tough luck.

    GG as always Bravejaf.

Yeah it was a good game but a frustrating way to lose, especially since that likely decided Big 10 title. Hopefully I rebound against Va. Tech and Georgia, can't afford another 4-loss season.

Tough way to lose. This has been a good game every year.
