The Crimson Tide open the season ranked #1 against #21 Penn State Nitnay Lions. The Tide look to take the lead in this matchup and open the season with a win. Coach Magoo and Saban hope to learn a little about what this years team has in the tank from this opening game. The game was neck and neck and both offenses were sputtering and then the defense for Bama steps up and forces an interception that was hyper speed into the endzone. The Lions came back and came close to the Tide but after the half Bama came out pumped and pulled away to an easy victory 35-10. The Bama coaches learned that the secondary for the Tide is full of ball hawks who have the speed and awareness to make moves to the ball. The offense is solid and McCarron has really growed and become a pin point passer and should rack up the yards in the air. The Tide look now to a bye next week to work out the bugs to take on the Buckeyes at home.

In the marquee match-up of week 1, the #2 Oregon Ducks traveled to Tallahassee to take on the #5 Seminoles. After a back and forth first half, the Seminole offense and defense exploded for several big plays until they made way the the backups in the fourth quarter. Clint Trickett had an excellent game throwing for over 300 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Seminole defense gave up some big plays early, but eventually settled down and punished Oregon QB Bryan Bennett every time he chose to run. Bennett threw the ball well but eventually was knocked out for a crucial series.

Stats for several of the new offensive starters:

QB Clint Trickett 13-20 345 yard 3 td 0 int
HB James Wilder 12 for 108 yards 1 TD
HB Devonta Freeman 9 rushes for 69 yards, 3 receptions 23 yards
FB Chris Newby 4 carries 11 yards 1 TD, 2 receptions 5 yards
WR Christian Green 2 receptions 96 yards, 1 TD
WR Greg Dent 3 receptions 86 yards, 1 TD

The Seminoles will now turn their attention to the USC Trojans in week 2.

    Miami-0

The last time the Buckeyes were in South Beach, they were celebrating National Title number 8. The return trip saw the Buckeyes start their defense with offense as they blank the Canes 41-0. Braxton Miller wasn't really needed as he only threw 9 passes, completing 7 for 221 yards passing and 3 TD's. HB Jamal Berry had 97 yards on 12 carries and 2 TD's. The Buckeyes D showed why defense wins championships, only allowing 123 yards of total offense, and sacking Miami's QB 5 times and forcing two interceptions. They also held the Canes to -1 yards rushing on 23 carries.

The Buckeyes have the week off before #1 Alabama comes to town.

The USC Trojans made their way to Doak Campbell Stadium for a week 2 showdown with the Seminoles in a Florida monsoon. The Seminoles struggled running the ball all day and had to resort to throwing the ball often. Late in the first half with FSU driving to increase their lead, Trickett throw a pick six putting the Trojans right back in the game. In the second half the Seminole Defense really came to play and ended up breaking Trojan receiver George Farmer's back. For the day, the defense forced three picks, the final one by Sophomore Mark Bryant could be a candidate for play of the year.

The offensive star of the game for FSU was Clint Trickett, who threw for over 400 yards and 3 tds and ran for another.

The Seminoles now have a bye week as they prepare for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. In other news, the Seminoles have received their first commitment of the year in Sterling Davis, the number one rated recruit in the nation who is often compared to Calvin Johnson.

The Oregon Ducks traveled into Death Valley and were able to come away victorious thanks to a huge second half. The Clemson Tigers stormed out of the gate, taking a 21-3 first quarter lead before DeAnthony Thomas took a kickoff back 107 yards up the gut to make it 21-10 and the end of 1. After that the Duck defense caught steam, intercepting Clemson QB Tahj Boyd four times in the last three quarters and causing a fumble on a sack. The Ducks ended up outscoring the Tigers 35-7 to finish the game.

The star of the game was DeAnthony Thomas, who had 293 all-purpose yards(18 rushing, 90 receiving, and 185 return).

#18 Michigan outlasts #8 Notre Dame in see-saw battle 42-38 for their first win under their new head coach. Neither defense was able to stop the pass as both Devin Gardner (Michigan) and Tommy Rees (ND) each threw for over 400 yards. Rees was able to squeeze off a whopping 56 passes, however, it was Gardner's 2 rushing touchdowns that gave the Wolverines the edge. Michigan scored on their first drive of the second half to increase their lead to 35-17, but had trouble converting on 3rd downs and allowed the Irish to score three straight touchdowns to actually take the lead 38-35. Gardner got lucky as receiver Matt Williams turned a short pass into a long 64 yard touchdown with just 47 seconds left to play. Finally the Wolverine defense was able to keep the Irish out of the end zone as Tommy Rees's 4th down pass fell harmlessly to the ground.

The Oregon D was outstanding today, only allowing 3 points(the TD came on a pick 6) the entire game while holding the Hurricanes to only 168 yards of total offense. The secondary was all over passes, snagging 3 picks and deflecting numerous Stephen Morris passes. DT Taylor Hart was a menace, racking up 3 sacks out of the Ducks 5 total sacks. The win marks an impressive bounce back for the Duck defense after a rough first 5 quarters and gives them momentum heading into Pac-12 play.

The LSU Tigers hosted the USC Trojans today and boy was it a game. It started off with big plays and ended with big plays. This game was like a tennis match going back and forth trading leads almost on every possession after the 2nd quarter. It finally came to a halt when the time ran out but overtime did not disappoint. It went in to double overtime by the time the Tigers defense got a stop and forced the Trojans to kick a field goal and when the change of possession came the LSU Tigers scored a touchdown with a quick line of scrimmage change and audibled to run through the right gap between the tackles. It was a great game. A nail bitter and the football fans got their monies worth. gg cyoung

Another nasty and rainy day in Florida, turned into an easy FSU win. The Seminole offense at times looked ugly, however the game was never in doubt. Clint Trickett, who is off to an excellent start this season, was knocked from the game with a concussion so FSU ran the ball often. The Seminole defense was in control all game. Halfback Devonta Freeman went over the 100 yard mark for the first time this season. Both Christian Green and Kris Newby scored a pair of touchdowns. At times it appeared like the Seminoles were just going through the motions looking forward towards their eventual showdown with Ohio State in the National Championship game. Premature?? Maybe, but the Seminoles are a confident bunch. Florida State now looks towards NC State where they are already installed as a 24 point favorite.

After the terrible playbook joke in week one, and a fourth quarter meltdown in week two, the hurricanes clawed thier way back to respect in week four with a dominant win over ACC Atlantic opponent Wake Forrest. Fumbles, safties , interseptions you name it the Miami defense did it; it's still it too early to tell if The U is for real. With a new scheme in place the coach is ready to prove what the polls don't say; Miami is ready for who ever, when ever, and what ever. Here are the game stats........

Take 2, Early on it appeared that the Seminoles were disinterested in this game going down 16-0 in the first half. The offense looked sluggish and the defense dropped interception after interception. Halfway through the second quarter Clint Trickett went to work and put 21 points on the board to take a halftime lead of 21-19. The second half was all Seminoles as they dominated both sides of the ball. Trickett ended up throwing for over 300 yards and 3 scores. James Wilder ran for 132 yards and a score, while freshman Chris Newby accounted for 3 scores. The Seminoles will now travel to play the struggling Clemson Tigers.

After a crushing loss at LSU, the Trojans returned to the sunny confines of the LA Coliseum to take on the 23rd ranked Utah Utes. The Trojans continued the onslaught, going into halftime up 31-10. Utah came out in the 2nd half ready to do some damage, and they almost turned it into a one-score game.....but the Trojans were able to hold on for the dominant victory.

HB Will Bradford 7 car, 103 yds, 1 td

The Trojans coming off a win against ranked conference foe Utah, look to string together another victory for its first winning streak of the season against the California Golden Bears. On the road for the 3rd time in 4 weeks, USC started off slow in the first 10 minutes of the game, going down 14-7 looking shell-shocked. Coach Kiffin held an impromptu huddle on the sidelines to try to knock some sense into his guys....and boy did it work! USC scored 17 unanswered points, and dominated the rest of the game behind record setting days from QB Jesse Scroggins and HB Will Bradford. Next on the docket for the Trojans, the 2-1 upstart Arizona Wildcats.

    Offense

QB Jesse Scroggins 421 yds, 2 td, 1 rushing td
HB Will Bradford 30 car, 201 yds, 3 td

    Defense
    CB Anthony Brown 2 int
    DE T. J. Henderson 3 tak, 1 sack, 1 FF

The Seminoles traveled to their rival Clemson Tigers looking to get one step closer to another ACC Championship. The Seminoles were dominant on both sides of ball. Offensively Clint Trickett threw for 4 more touchdowns, while both of the Noles running backs went over 100 yards. The offensive player of the game was wideout Christian Green who had 149 reception yards and 3 scores. On defense, the Seminoles forced starter Tajh Boyd into 4 interceptions and sacked him five times. The Seminoles will now prepare to coast through the rest of their schedule and ultimately defeat Ohio State to become National Champions.

Ohio State travels down to Death Valley and comes away with a victory. After the game, OSU's coach was very irate with his defense. "I'm pissed. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy we won but we very well could've lost. I don't know what happened. We were lights out in the 1st half and in control and then we totally shut down. 400 yards passing is unacceptable. I refuse to allow that to happen again." As bad as the OSU D was, the OSU O was lights out. QB Braxton Miller had the game of his career to date throwing for 328 yards and 3 TDs on 14-20 passing. He also added 91 yards rushing and a TD on 9 carries. Jamaal Berry continued his Heisman Campaign with 13 carries for 159 yards rushing and 3 TDs.

Michigan falls to highly ranked Wisconsin 35-21.

The story of today was missed opportunities for the Wolverines. Devin Gardner continued to miss open receivers deep down-field and the Michigan defensive backs could not tackle or catch the many interception opportunities that they had. James White ran all over the defense to the tune of 197 yards and 4 TDs as well as making a brilliant jumping/spinning 12yd TD catch over a defenders outstretched hands. Highly touted Wolverine RB Stephen Hopkins was quite the opposite rushing for just 52 yards on 16 carries. This loss drops the Wolverines to 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in the Big 10 as their new coach tries to find a way to capitalize on the talented team.

Alabama travels to the underated Miami Hurricanes to keep the winning up and their hopes alive for the national championship. They slip in the rankings from 5 to 8 even though they pounded their opponents. But anyway the Tide went to Miami to hopefully win and leave the week behind them with some recruits signing letters of intent. This past week they have signed some nice recruits to fill some much needed holes. The game was a tight game much of the game but eventually the ground and pound of the Tide took their toll on the Hurricanes. The game ended with a score of 45-21 but was much closer than the score until a key fumble and recovery and touchdown lead to a massive flip of points. The flip let the Tide put it on cruise control for a while but the pesky Canes went into hurry up mode and came to within 10 points only to have the Tide turn the offense back on and win the game.

Texas gets the first win for the new coaching staff downing Iowa State 49-10.

Coming off of an embarrassing loss to Oklahoma last week, the Longhorns offense showed considerable improvement behind new starter Connor Woods. Malcolm Brown pounded the ball at the defense to the tune of 152 yards and 4 TDs on just 16 carries before the starters were pulled half way through the 3rd quarter. Woods balanced the attack by completing 15 of 18 pass attempts for 251 yards and 2 TDs. Mike Davis hauled in 5 of those completions for 122 yards and 1 TD while 9 different Longhorns caught passes on the day.

Iowa State tried to keep it close in the 1st half as a wide receiver reverse pulled them to within 4 points with 3:02 left in the half. Texas was able to drive the ball down the field and punch in a score with just :40 seconds left on the clock. On Iowa States 1st play following the ensuing kickoff, Carrington Byndom intercepted a pass at the Iowa State 25 yard line which allowed Woods to hook up with TE Dominique Jones to go up 28-10. The second half was all Longhorns as they scored 2 more TDs in the 3rd quarter before bringing in the reserves to finish out the day.

Bama took on the Volunteers of Tenn, and completely destroy the rival and look forward to LSU after a bye week. This game was over by half time and some second stringers got some playing time to help develop the future talent. Really nothing to report as you can see the Tide completely dominated the #12 Volunteers.

The Longhorns down another conference foe as the offense continues it's balanced attack. The QB switch to Connor Wood has paid big dividends for the Texas coaching staff. Wood has the arm strength to fit the ball into tighter windows and has gone 2 straight games without throwing a pick. Today he through for 222 yards and 3 TDs while spreading the ball out to 7 different receivers. Malcolm Brown had a great day on the ground as he ran for 216 yards on 24 carries including a 75 yard TD scamper in the 3rd quarter.

The first quarter saw long drives by both teams eat up much of the clock and trade touchdowns. After holding the Cowboys to FG in the 2nd quarter, the Longhorns were able to tack on 2 more TDs to take a 21-10 lead into the half. Oklahoma State had an opportunity to make it close after stopping the Longhorns on their first possession of the 2nd half, but CB Robert Fisher made a spectacular one-handed interception in the flat and took it all the way to the house. Even though OK State was able to score a few more times, their defense could not come up with the stops they needed to close the gap.
