Starting in 2013 Coach QBKILLAR will be taking over the helm at Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles are described by most as average at best. Looking down the barrel of a tough schedule that is front loaded with #2 USC and Baylor, they then travel to SEC country to end the tough stretch with ACC coach rival Abom.

There are a couple of bright spots for the Eagles though. QB's C. Weeks and A. Favors both boast great tallent and look to be a huge bright spot. Both are gonna be tough to contain with better than average speed and lots of time to mature as they are only RS Soph's. Taking the hand off from this QB duo will be D. Johnson. Johnson is a back who only needs a small hole to rip off a big gain and is hard for a defense to get a hand on. Catching the passes will be the responsibility of Sr T. Lampley and 6'5" Jr D. Sullivan. A seasoned O line will be protecting and blocking for this group.

Now on the defense. The bright spot and anchor of this team is OLB J. Collins. Collins tallied 58 solo tackles for the Golden Eagles last year and hopes to build on those number's this year. He has been voted team captain. Now at the DB spot there isnt much fall all. With this young and speedy group putting up points could be hard for even the most seasoned group of receivers. The defensive line can hold their own even without the talented backfield. They are anchored by R. Henderson, DT K. Thorton and DT Rakeem Nunez Roches. These three alone tip the scales at 912 LBS. Thats a lot of beef for anyone to try to plow their way through and a QB dismantling machine. Southern Miss fans will except nothing less than a winning record and bowl apperance from this group as expectations are high Hattiesburg. Only time will tell but Coach QBKILLAR is looking to end the season in the top 25.

    Southern Miss Shocks the Nation
Trojans wake up with huge hangover.

In what was suppose to be a warm up game for USC turned to tragedy as they saw USM come in and sneak out with a win. Some speculate that fans are still in the colosseum today thinking it was all just a bad dream.

As the game opened it was 2 things were clear. One was the Golden Eagle D was better than anticipated and two was there was no way that USM could pass the ball with the USC secondary picking off QB A. Favor twice in just 9 attempts. Both came in the 1st half as their offense struggled to move the ball. But the ground game was a different story. On 23 attempts senior D. Johnson tallied 167 yards but never got into the endzone to really reward his efforts though things were clear that he carried this whole offense on his back. In the passing game A Favors went or 4 for 9, 61 yards total with 1 TD and 2 int's. Q. Pierce led the way with receiving catching 2 of the 4 passes with one being a 40 yard TD reception. Coach QB has a decision to make before the Baylor game as to which QB to start. A off week should give him time to evaluate all his options.

Defense is where USM won the game though. The Golden Eagles soared all over the field and smothered any running game that the Trojans had hoped for. The biggest of the plays coming in the second quarter when FS J Cotton intercepted a Matt Barkley pass and returned it 70 yards to the house to give Southern Miss a glimmer of hope that this game could be won. D. Reda led the way in tackles with 4 followed closely by T. Kennedy who had 3 tackles, one of them being a sack.

Nothing to report in recruiting news in Hattiesburg this week. [IMG]

Southern Miss Survives Scare at Baylor

Southern Miss learns a valuable lesson while visiting Baylor. After leading 34-7 with just a little under 5 minutes left in the 3rd coach QB decides to call off the dogs thinking that all the fight had been taken out of Baylor. He couldnt have been more wrong. In what ended up being a 37-35 final Coach QB had forgotten the competitive nature of this league and nobody gives up.

The game started out fast for the Golden Eagles while on the first drive they go straight now the field and open up with 3 points. Then they hold on defense and force Baylor to punt on which they answer with a TD drive with just 7 seconds left on the clock. After the punt the USM defense comes up big on a 6 point pic 6 that leads to a 17-0 lead at the end of the 1st.

To start the 2nd Baylor starts to hit is stride and puts together a nice drive themselves that capped off with a 37 yard TD pass to Norwood. Then the Golden Eagles went back to work with a nice drive that ended with a 13 yard TD run from RB D Johnson for a 24-7 lead. After another giveaway by Baylors QB USM kicks a field goal to end the half with a 27-7 lead.

To open the 3rd quarter USM's defense once again holds strong and forces a punt. First pay from scrimage after the punt see's D Johnson knock out a 72 yard TD run to go up 34-7. After the kickoff the struggling Baylor QB throws another pic deep inside his own territory. This is where coach QB decided enough was enough. Running 3 run plays and missing a field goal the Baylor offense took over.

QB N Florence must have hit the smelling salt because it was at this point that he came alive. Putting together a barage of passes and leading his Golden Bears all the way back to a 2 point miracle come back. But after not being able to recover a on side kick the Golden Eagles sneak out with a win.

Coach QB was just too stubborn to change his ways and just kept trying to run the ball and abandoning what was a very effective passing game in the first half. But a win is a win and USM will take them any way they can get them at this point in the season.

    Stats
    USM
QB A Favors spread the ball out to 6 receivers going 10-14 115 yards with 1 TD and 0 pics.
RB D Johnson carried the ball 23 time for 220 yards 2 TDs. Another outstanding game for him.

    Baylor
    QB N Florence went 15-33 with 5 TD's and 4 Pics.
WR L Norwood caught 5 passes for 201 yards and 3 TD's. Outstanding game for this young WR.

ECU tries to be the first.

ECU gave a valiant effort at trying to knock off rival USM but just fell just short as the Golden Eagles proved to be to much.

ECU threw the first fury of punches in while playing their rivalry game with Southern Miss. They came out firing on all cylinders putting Coach QBKILLARS squad in a early hole that they had to crawl their way out of. On the opening drive ECU drove quickly down the field to take a 3-0 lead. On the pursuing USM drive tragedy struck QB A Favor as he threw his first pick of the game deep in his territory that ended up with the Pirates pushing their lead to 10-0. As QB Favor's tried to shake off the early misfortune and put together a drive to make up for the mistake lightning struck again as he was once again picked off by ECU FS Magazu but his time Magazu finished up what he started taking this one to the house and a stunned M M Roberts stadium saw their crew go down 17-0 and thinking this is the day their luck runs out.

But a scrappy Eagles team refused to lay down. Putting together a couple of drives and starting to find their stride on defense they trailed at half time 24-14.

The second half was all Southern Miss though. QB Favors went to work. Before going down with a bruised sternum in the fourth he had racked up 337 yards passing on 16-24 passing. While WR D Sullivan was his favorite target of the night catching 6 passes for 187 yards with a td he did spread the ball around nicely 8 different receivers to keep the ECU defense guessing.

Coach QB didnt abandoned the running game as this might suggest he used a deal HB system to rack up 133 yards rushing on the day. K Hardy had 15 touches for 70 yards while D Johnson carried the ball 14 times for 63 yards. Each running back had 1 touchdown respectively.

On the ECU side of the ball QB R Johnson went 13-20 for 236 yards and 1 TD. The Pirates struggled to move the ball on the ground seeing RB T Hunt go for 21 yards on 8 touches.

The Golden Eagles stay in Mississippi this week as they host in state opponent Ole Miss. This gurantees to be a great game so stay tuned to your only source of information on the Eagles..... W.O.U.8.1.2 Eagle Football.
