This year we will have an Experience Offensive & Defensive Freshman of the Year. Now that we are six weeks into the season we have an opportunity to see which Freshmen are making an impact on the defensive side of the ball.

SS Willie Taylor -- The true freshman was a 4-star recruit for the Tide. Taylor comes into the season rated 74 overall with very good acceleration and hitting power to go along with his coverage skills. He is making good use of those skills and has made an impact for the Tide.

    SEASON STATS: 23 Tackles | 1 TFL | 3 INT | 1 FR

CB Phillip Cummings -- Cummings has been as advertised on Signing Day, as Coach Dakota proclaimed his a "shutdown" corner from Day One. The 4-star recruit from ID tremendous speed and acceleration to make up for any inexperience and developing coverage skills.
    SEASON STATS: 32 Tackles | 2 INT | 2 FF

FS Jason Scott -- The Jackets have struggled early on in '14 but a bright spot for first year HC Gowazzucougs has been the play of Scott who is third on the team in tackles. His skills are developing as he will need to continue to grow into a leadership role for the rebuilding efforts in Atlanta. 19th in the ACC in total tackles.

    SEASON STATS: 41 Tackles | 3 TFL | 1 INT | 1 SAFETY
    [IMG]
SS Anthony Simon -- At 6' 202 Simon is a big safety that has the size, tackling and explosiveness to be a difference maker in the box for GT. But his ability to drop back and play man or zone coverage is what makes him a difficult player to gameplan against, especially with Scott in the same defensive backfield.
    SEASON STATS: 30 Tackles | 1 INT | 2 PD | 1 FF

LB Fred Merritt -- The 4-star recruit from Maryland also has 4 tackles for a loss this year. With his explosive acceleration and ability to shed blocking he will be a handful for Big Ten offenses the rest of his career. Sixth in the Big Ten in sacks and tied for seventh in forced fumbles.

    SEASON STATS: 30 tackles | 9 TFL | 7 Sacks | 2 Forced Fumble
    [IMG]
LB Randall Bonds -- Not as highly regarded as Merritt on signing day Bonds almost as productive as his classmate. His ability to flow to the ball and bring a load when he gets will be even more important once he becomes a more consistent tackler.

    SEASON STATS: 28 Tackles | 4 TFL | 1 Sack

FS Jonathan Ward -- The Nittany Lions have a huge vistory under their belt this season over the Buckeyes and Ward recorded four in that contest. When he was pegged as a Day One starter by recruiting analysts, everyone agreed he has was a hitter with solid tackling ability but the questions came up about his coverage skills.
    SEASON STATS: 32 Tackles | 4 TFL | 2 INT | 3 PD | 1 FF | 1 FR
    [IMG]
SS Joe Kennedy -- Not to be outdone by his first year defensive backfield mate, Ward, Joe Kennedy has been equally impressive despite his youth.

    SEASON STATS: 30 Tackles | 2 INT | 1 PD | 1 FF | 1 FR

LB Chase Coleman -- With a 6'5 187 lbs frame Coleman may have been mistaken for a slashing wingman for the 'Vols hoops squad instead of a sure tackling explosive linebacker. But he has made his mark on the defense and is currently third on the team in tackles. Tied for 18th in total tackles.

    SEASON STATS: 49 Tackles | 11 TFL | 1 Sack | 1 FR | 2 PD

It is good to know that a Georgia Tech player is getting recognized for his play, I hope Mr. Scott can continue his excellent play this week against Duke.

This one is going to be interesting in my opinion between Ward from PSU and Scott from Ga Tech. Based on impact Scott may get the nod but Ward and the Nittany Lions are fighting for a Big Ten title. Let's see who goes out and takes this one.

Yes, folks I have two freshman starting at strong and free safety. By the time they are seniors no one will be getting by these studs.

I thought about your two stud running backs before making the posts. What I probably meant to say that no one is going to past them by air or by land.
