    2014 Nebraska Cornhuskers Game Recaps

    Week 1

The Cornhuskers traveled to LA, California to face off against the highly touted USC Trojans for their season opener. Coming into the game, coach Fuzzy knew his defense would be the weak point of his team this year. It is still a rebuilding process. His fears were realized in this game, as the Trojans could do wrong offensively, firing at will on the Cornhusker defense. Despite all of this, Braylon Heard apparently didn't get the memo that Nebraska was supposed to lose today. He unleashed his fury on the USC defense, whizzing by defenders for 237 yards and 4 TDs on just 19 attempts. If he can stay healthy this year, he will carry his team to a lot of wins this season.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers' schedule would not get any easier in week 2, as they traveled to face the #4 ranked team in the nation, the Ohio State Buckeyes. Nebraska was determined not to let this game slip away from them as they did against USC, and once again Braylon Heard carried the offense on his back with 32 carries for 190 yards and 2 TDs. Brion Carnes had an efficient day passing, going 16/28 223 yards, 2 TDs, and 0 INTs. The score was the same as last week (41-38), but this time Nebraska found themselves the victors. It is going to be a long season if the offense has to hang 40+ points every game to win, this defensive unit has to step it up.

Nebraska manages to hang on in week 4 and come out with a win, despite the offense going on vacation in the second half. It was a relatively quiet day for Heisman hopeful Braylon Heard, as he rushed 110 yards on 27 attempts for 2 TDs. Carnes threw ~300 yards, but had no TDs and 1 INT. The defense did just enough to give the Cornhuskers their third win on the season.

The defense finally stepped it up for Nebraska in their conference opener against Kansas, holding them to 6 total points. Braylon Heard had a break out game with 181 yards on 32 attempts and 2 TDs. If the senior can stay healthy, everyone on campus believes he will be in the running for the Heisman this year. Carnes was 9/16 and threw for 177 yds and 2 TDs.

This game already has the NFL scouts buzzing about talented Braylon Heard, as he totally dismantled the Iowa State defense and ran for 237 yards on 26 attempts and 3 TDs. He would surely have had more if not benched in the second half. The defense gave up a few big plays, but had an easy day as the offense chewed most of the clock in this one. Nebraska improves to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.

The #6 Nebraska Cornhuskers traveled to Kansas State and came away with another big conference win. Braylon Heard was once again the highlight reel of the game, rushing for a career high of 270 yards on 26 attempts and 3 TDs. He was benched in the second half. This kid has put up amazing numbers this season, nearing a 10 ypc average with every game and has 25 broken tackles recorded. He has rushed for over 1,200 yards, and if he stays healthy, the sky is the limit. Nebraska improves to 5-1 and will prepare for the game of the year for them in week 8 against the powerhouse that is Texas.

The smell of an upset was in the air on a cold day in Lincoln
#7 Nebraska hosted #3 Texas in what was set to be the biggest matchup of the Cornhusker's regular season. Before the kick off, there was a sense of excitement and bitter upset stirring among the home crowd. Nebraska would get the ball first and get off to a fast start, as Heisman candidate Braylon Heard busted a 73 yard run off a counter play to the right. No long after this big burst of momentum, Heard tried to do too much and coughed up the pigskin. The Cornhuskers would get the ball right back on a 3rd scramble by Hall that resulted in a fumble. They got a FG out of the turnover and never looked back. Braylon Heard continued to tear up the Texas defense as he went 223 yards on 30 attempts. The Texas offensive plan is a lot like that used at Nebraska, with most of their offense funneling through their premier HBs. This was the key to a Nerbaska victory as the Big Red defense held Traylon Shead to 68 yards on 14 carries and 0 TDs. The defensive coordinator says that is mission accomplished. The celebration can't last long as Nebraska as to prepare for Oklahoma State in week 9. Nebraska fans everywhere are crossing their fingers that Heard can stay healthy the rest of the year, as he is set to break every Nebraska rushing record in a single season there is.

It was a low scoring affair on the field today for the Cornhuskers, as their defense did just enough to get them the 2 point victory. Two Braylon Heard TDs and 1 safety on Missouri's QB James Franklin were all the points put on the board by Nebraska, and all in the second quarter. The offense seemed to sleep walk through this one, simply going through the motions. Coach Fuzzy had to remind his team after the game that they still have 3 more games this season, and if anyone is not seen giving it 110% they will be quickly benched. The Coach added that this is not the time to be lazy and complacent, as Texas will be waiting eagerly to strike revenge on Nebraska in the Conference Championship game for the embarrassing regular season upset.
