2014 Nebraska: The Power of Corn

Nebraska wins first game under Coach JerzeyReign

Poor Fresno State. Whoever scheduled you against the mighty Cornhuskers should be tried and hung. This one folks was never close as Nebraska had a dominating 28-0 lead. It left Coach JerzeyReign with alot of questions as he only saw his first string in limited action.

"Well I know one thing, that running game better get better." Jerzey said afterwards.

A run first coach was shocked that his starting RB was only able to put up 99 yards rushing on a inferior Fresno State team. M.Smith picked it up late but Coach Reign was already knee deep, checking for rectal tone!

"We just have to play better, that was very sloppy."

Doesn't sound like a man who just watched his team win 45-14, does it? I guess Husker fans should be proud and excited as Coach Jerzey only expects perfection from his football team.

Next week the #10 Cornhuskers take on #1 Alabama in a great out of conference clash.

Legacy Restored?

Lincoln, NE- On a rainy Saturday two top ten powers took the field. Biggest game your going to get this time of the year. In one corner you have the upstart Cornhuskers led by arrogant newcomer JerzeyReign. In the other corner you have poised Coach RyTy and his two time defending National Champs, Alabama. Lot of red on the field. Before his team took the field Coach Jerzey simply told his team "Their will be blood, we'll both be covered in it. Difference being? They'll be the only ones bleeding." Helluva pep talk, right?

The Cornhuskers would come out on fire. Methodically taking their first possession in for 6.

"Our first play of the game really setup that whole drive." Coach JerzeyReign said referring to a game opening PA pass for 19 yards. "They got kind of hestitant allowing us to run the ball at will."

Nebraska would actually jump out to a 10-0 lead at the end of one and a 13-7 halftime lead. Alabama was plagued by turnovers as they had 4 total in the game. A defensive battle throughout neither team managed to put points up in the third as both teams traded punts.

"A couple of those I really wanted to go for. But common sense took over and told me to trust our defense, so I did." Coach JerzeyReign said.

After a Alabama drive would settle for a 24 yard field goal early in the fourth after a beautiful drive led them inside the Cornhusker ten yard line. With the score 13-10 both teams once again traded punts and Nebraska's offense finally managed to get something going. Behind a strong running game (M.Smith 19att 86yds 2TD) the Cornhuskers managed to stick a dagger into Alabama's 3 peat hopes as M.Smith would score from 14 yards out to push the Nebraska lead up to 10, 20-10. Alabama would make one more last gasp and would score a touchdown with 46 seconds left. After a failed onside kick and only two Alabama timeouts to worry about Nebraska ran the clock to about 10 seconds before being forced to punt. Alabama took one more last heave but the pass was severely off target.

Nebraska Follows Bama Win With Thrashing Of Cincy

Lincoln, NE- After a huge win over two time defending national champs Alabama, many in the country thought the Huskers would fall victim to the upset bug. Nebraska remained focused on their goals and dominated the Cincinnati Bearcats on Saturday, 45-17.

It didn't start off well for the Cornhuskers as starting HB M.Smith was knocked out of the game on his first carry. Needing someone to step up, A.Williams the backup tailback, did just that. He had 23 carries and rushed for 94 yards including 2 scores. He also led the team in receptions as he caught 4 balls for 42 yards.

"He played well today. We really needed that." Coach Jerzey said about Williams' performance.

Huskers' QB J.Richardson kept up his hot start as he finished 17/25 225 yards with 3TDs and no picks.

After Cincy would strike first with a FG, Nebraska would rattle off 38 straight points to take complete control of this one. Cincy did manage to put up to late TDs against the defensive second unit to make the score respectable.

Next Week the Cornhuskers open up their Big 12 schedule at home when they take on Kansas.

66 Points Finally KOs Kansas

Lincoln, NE- Wow, what a game!! Nebraska came into this one huge favorites but Kansas gave 'em all they could handle in this one. After it looked like Nebraska put this one away, Kansas came back but finally lost 66-45.

"I'm not happy at all with our team's performance. Effort on the offensive side was outstanding. Our defense will be walking with three shoes this entire week." an irate Nebraska Coach JerzeyReign said.

Kansas would strike first but Nebraska would have none of that and would quickly knot the score at 7. Kansas wouldn't be shellshocked and march right back down the field to take a 14-7 lead. Again the Cornhuskers would respond as QB J.Richardson would throw his 2nd touchdown of the quarter.

The second quarter would belong to the Huskers. The Huskers would open the frame on a 69 yard TD rush by M.Smith to take a 7 point lead. Kansas would respond with a FG but J.Richardson marched the Nebraska offense right back down the field capping it off with his 3rd TD pass of the game.

"He was on fire. That's the reason he's the captain." Coach JerzeyReign said.

The last 1:02 of the first half would keep the fireworks flowing. After W.Moore of Kansas threw his 3rd TD pass of the half it became the N.Davis show. The Nebraska returner would return the kick 93 yards for the score. Davis would return back three kickoff returns in the game, all after Kansas touchdowns.

"Those were huge. Everytime Kansas tried to gain some momentum, Davis snatched their breath away." Coach Jerzey said of his returner.

Nebraska would get the ball back quickly as P.Peterson (9tackles 7TFL 3Sacks 1FF 1FR) would intercept a HB toss.

"That was amazing. I never seen that before.... EVER!" Coach Jerzey said shaking his head.

That would lead to a Nebraska FG to make the halftime score 38-24 at the half. Game over right? Kansas couldn't sustain this type of showing all game against the mighty Huskers, could they? Yes they could.

Kansas would come out swinging in the second half as their offense would come out rocking. Nebraska's offense would struggle but N.Davis had their back. N.Davis kept the Huskers in front after returning two KO after Kansas touchdown back for scores of his own. Heading into the final frame the Huskers were still hanging on, 52-38.

After a quick Nebraska touchdown to make it a 59-38 game Coach JerzeyReign would call the dogs off. Kansas would not give up but on another impressive drive C.Overstreet would step in front of a Moore pass and return it 54 yards for a score to finally close out the Jayhawks. The Jayhawks would score again and recover the onside kick but four straight incompletions would end this one.

Passing:

Kansas: W.Moore 33/46 451yds 5TD 1INT
Nebraska: J.Richardson 16/23 209yds 3TD 1INT

Rushing:

Kansas: D.McBride 15att 42yds 0TD
Nebraska: M.Smith 14att 154yds 1TD

Recieveing:

Kansas: R.Harrison 7rec 121yds 2TD (Alot of their guys put up stats though)
Nebraska: L.Medlock 3rec 70yds 1TD

Defense:

Why bother people put up stats but they both sucked, lol.

Nebraska Wins But Lose Big In The End

Cornfield in Iowa- The Nebraska Cornhuskers did everything they set out to do Saturday. The defense was flying to the ball. The ground game was punishing. The passing game was cruising. After all this the Cornhuskers still recieved a shot to their championship title hopes.

A 46-7 win over a conference opponent never hurt worse. That's because Nebraska lost starting senior quarterback Jason Richardson on a dirty hit during the game. A late hit penalty early in the second quarter left the promising quaterback with a broken elbow, which could end his football career.

"I'm disgusted. A 15 yard penalty is not enough for a hit like that. The ball was well out of his hands and for a player to do something like that." an angry JerzeyReign said trying to watch his language.

To make matters worse, the Cornhuskers also lost their backup quarterback on another late hit later in the game. Sophmore Melvin Johnson will be out 4 weeks with a bruised shoulder.

"I don't like calling anyone dirty but the Big 12 has to look at the tape." Coach Jerzey said, now obviously trying to hold back emotion.

That led to sophmore Rob Dodds taking over the huddle. The sophmore finished the game nicely, 7-8 92yds 1TD, but the overall feeling around campus was mum.

Nebraska's M.Smith touched the century mark (105yds 2TD) as Nebraska never let the Iowa State defense get a rest on the sideline. The Nebraska defense forced two turnovers and also opened up the scoring with a safety as this game was never in doubt.

Without their top two quarterbacks, Nebraska is forced to recall true Freshman Alex Coker's redshirt status and rumors have it that he may start next week.

Hopefully the frosh catches on fast as Nebraska faces its' toughest stretch in its schedule with games against #7 Kansas State, #15 Texas, #6 Oklahoma State, and #23 Missouri. With Texas A&M also looking strong (and could be possibly ranked about time they meet) the 6 out of the Huskers' final 7 games could be against ranked opponents without their star quarterback calling the signals.

#2 Nebraska Passes By #4 Colorado, Win Big 12 North

Lincoln, NE- What an ugly game for the Nebrask Cornhusker defense. A defense that normally shuts the door on teams early barely hung on Saturday.

"They didn't play their best but they played good enough." Coach JerzeyReign said obviously frustrated.

Colorado's option attack wore down the Cornhusker defense as they compiled 189 yards on the ground. Their consistency on the ground gave them an early 7-0 lead entering the second quarter. Nebraska's strong rushing attack was held to only 36 yards.

"It wasn't the players it was the playcalling. I ran when they expected to see and they shut it down. Plain and simple." Coach Jerz said afterwards.

With the running game held in check, true freshman A.Coker stepped up in a huge way with the best outing of his short collegiate career. The Nebraska QB finished the day 16-17 262 yards 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions.

"Yeah, their is a reason this kid is our starter. He's really special." Coach Jerzey acknowledged.

Behind Coker's leadership the Cornhuskers stormed back in the second quarter to take a 14-10 lead heading into the break. Coker connected on a touchdown to star reciever L.Medlock from 29 yards out with 3 seconds left in the half to give 'em the lead.

"That was a beautiful throw. I had to catch that." L.Medlock said of his freshman QB's pass.

Nebraska's defense continued their bend but don't break philosophy as they held the Buffs scoreless in the 3rd quarter. Coker would connect with TE J.Shelton to give the Huskers a 21-10 lead heading into the final frame.

The Buffs weren't out of this one just yet as an early 4th quarter score cut their deficit to 4, 21-17 with 4 minutes to go. A calm Husker offense marched (and ate up precious time) right down the field and HB M.Smith would punch it in from four yards out to seal the game. The Buffs wouldn't give up as they scored a meaningless touchdown with 4 seconds to go to make the final score a little closer. The final in this one, 28-23.

Good Game B, see you next season hopefully for the same reason: The Big 12 North at stake.

NEVADA PUSHES #2 NEBRASKA TO THE EDGE

Side of a casino, Nevada- The second ranked team in the country certainly didn't see this coming. Nebraska came into this game looking tired and Nevada almost put their title hopes to sleep. This game was supposed to be a sleeper but the Wolfpack gave Nebraska the entire game before a missed FG with 2 seconds left let Nebraska escape with their dignity (and title hopes) in check.

"I kept tellin' the boys all week to stay prepared. Stay sharp. It looks like they didn't take it seriously and you see what almost happen." a frustrated coach Jerz said afterwards.

Nebraska's offense looked sluggish all game. Luckily their defense stood tall as the Huskers limped into the locker room with a 10-6 lead.

That slim halftime lead gave the unranked Wolfpack all the swag they would need as they outscored the Huskers 14-0 in the 3rd quarter to take a 20-10 lead.

"I can't explain it. Our offense just didn't play like themselves. Our defense kept us in the national title hunt."

After a timeout and a heated Coach Jerzey yelling at his entire team for an entire timeout, the Nebraska O finally woke up. Nebraska would move the ball well and score 14 points in the 4th to take a 24-23 lead with 2 minutes to go.

Nevada had this game in the bag as their recievers made spectacular catches and big plays to get into their kickers FG range. The young kicker couldn't contain himself as he pushed a 38 yarder (with plenty of leg) wide right.

A big sigh of relief for the Nebraska faithful. With a bye week next week, the Cornhuskers have one more test vs. Texas in the Big 12 title game.

Big 12 Championship Game: #2 Nebraska vs. #9 Texas

There Can Only Be One
[IMG]
Big 12 Championship Goes To Wire

Arrowhead Stadium- The experts went back and forth with this one all week. No matter what team they chose they all were agreed on one thing: this would go down to the wire. When the smoke cleared, the #2 ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers came out on top, 24-17.
The first quarter played out like expected with both teams trying to make the other tip there hand.

"I wasn't worried at all. Don't mind when the offense puts points on the board but I rest my hat on my defense. They played great today." Coach JerzeyReign stated.

Texas would eventually but 3 on the board after the Cornhuskers stood tall with the Longhorns deep in their territory. Both teams would force punts on their next two drives before the scoreboard would light up again. The Longhorns' M.Smith (3rec 26yds 1TD) we catch a 9 yard touchdown pass from QB J.Sanders (13/27 259yds 2TD 1INT) to give the Longhorns' a 10-0 lead late in the first half.
The Cornhuskers would abandon their run first mentality as they would answer with their own drive. Nebraska's M.Smith (25car 110yds 2TD) would score from 2 yards out to cut the Texas lead to 10-7 heading into the locker rooms.
Both teams came out cold after the break as Nebraska would manage a field goal in the 3rd quarter. That FG was the only points of the quarter as Groza winner, D.Blakenship would knock it in from 26 yards out.
The fourth quarter would open up with 14 points in the first minute. Nebraska continuing a drive started in the 3rd quarter used a fake FG to take the lead, 17-10. Sophmore QB R.Dodds found C.Broussard all alone for the 4 yard touchdown pass.

"We had to try something. After the offense stalled I knew 3 points wouldn't be enough. Players sold the FG well and we caught Texas off guard. That was my play of the game." Coach Jerzey stated smiling.

The Longhorns' wouldn't remain in awe for long. On their second play of their next drive QB J.Sanders found L.Crosby downfield for a 71 yard touchdown pass to quickly knot the game at 17.

After both teams were forced to punt on their onsuing drives Nebraska finally got the ball back. With true freshman QB Coker led a magnificent drive, including converting a huge 3rd and 20. With 42 seconds left in the game, HB M.Smith would score his second TD of the game as he sealed the victory from 7 yards out.

This was coach JerzeyReign's first conference championship with the Huskers, second of his TF career, and the victory now pushes him into his first TF BCS championship game where he'll face coach JCA and the #1 ranked Miami Hurricanes.
