Virginia Tech 2014 Team Preview Offense The Hokies bring back their top two quarterbacks from last year, with RS Sophomore Eric Clemons likely holding on to his role as starter that he earned when RS Senior Ricardo Young went down with an injury against Marshall last season. Young will likely be used in different option sets to try to keep defenses off guard, but the team will rest their hopes on the throwing arm of Clemons. At running back RS Junior Kurt Sutherland will take over, Sutherland is a big strong back that also shows unique speed at his size and will look to follow in the footsteps of Tony Gregory and reach 100 yards rushing this season. He will be followed on the depth chart by Sophomore Will Wilson as prized recruit Erik Salyer will take a redshirt. Receiver E.L. Smiling will head the receiving core, and looks to continue his success from last year, leading a thin receiving core onto the field. Defense The line returns almost all of its starters and will be key factor in the play of the Hokie defense tis year, with 6 players all boasting large amounts of experience. RS Senior LOLB Brian Laiti will lead a young linebacking core and has a unique combination of speed and quickness that makes him a force against both the running and passing game. True Freshman Joey Smith will take over ROLB duties this year, and RS Sophomore Cornelius Thompson will start at MLB Corner will be a key spot will RS Senior Kyle Fuller finally getting his chance to shine in the secondary, but largely unproven backups could be the Hokies undoing. Two experienced players will take over the safety positions, but with two stud freshman lying in wait, they will have to play tough to keep their starting jobs.
