Vikings Hold Off Pats Late, Open Season 2-0

Minneapolis, MN - The Vikings & Patriots both came into their week 2 match-up undefeated, a game that pitted the top two offenses from week 1 of the 2014 season. While the Vikings lead this game from wire-to-wire, it was still a back-and-forth battle that could've gone either way in the end.

The Vikings dominated the first quarter. They marched down the field on their opening drive, settling for a Blair Walsh FG. A New England 3 and out was followed by another long drive by the Vikings, this time AP punched it in from 8 yards out to give the Vikings a 10-0 lead after a quarter of play.

The Pats would respond on their next drive behind a 41-yard run by Stevan Ridley, but had to settle for 3. Just three plays later, rookie QB Teddy Bridgewater would hit Cordarrelle Patterson on a curl, who would break a tackle and take it 69 yards to paydirt! With 4:20 left in the half, the Patriots would respond again with a time-consuming drive and convert a 4th & 1 from the 1 yard line on a FB dive by Develin for 6 with just 38 seconds left in the half. Halftime score: 17-10 in favor of MN.

Not much action in the 3rd quarter - a FG by the Vikings made it 20-10 going into the 4th Q.

Lots of action in the 4th quarter. The Vikings decided to go for it on 4th & 1 from the Patriots 40 but were stuffed on a FB dive. The Pats would take advantage (converting a 4th down of their own), and scored on a 6-yd TD pass to Gronk with 3:18 to play. The Pats tried to catch Minny off-guard with an onsides kick, to no avail. The crucial play in the game - 3rd & 12 from the NE 26, Jennings was tackled short of the first down, but a roughing the passer call gave the Vikings a first down. Next play - 8 yrd TD run by AP to put the Vikes up 10. However, the Pats would respond yet again on a bad play on the ball by SS Robert Blanton allowed Brandon LaFell to score on a 65-yd TD pass. But the onside kick was recovered by Minnesota again, and a couple of first downs later, ball game.

    Final Score:

    Minnesota: 27
    New England: 24
