    2014 Wolverine Preview

CHECK BACK HERE LATER TODAY FOR UPDATES THROUGHOUT SPRING PRACTICE

This should be a very interesting season for the Wolverines. Fresh off a devastating choke job in the National Title, the Maize & Blue are back to defend their back to back conference titles. Half of last year’s starters are gone, including the entire backfield and both 99 OVR DE’s. That said, as always there is plenty of talent in Ann Arbor, just not as much experience as in season’s past.

The most important players in Coach Hood’s offensive scheme are the backs, and all four who contributed on a regular basis last year are now in the NFL. There is a battle between true freshmen Sid Kerr and senior Lawrence Holmes at the QB position, and Jason Burton, Leslie Cutler, and true freshmen Micah Richardson need to step in at the RB positions. Last year’s top WR Thad Marshall returns for his senior season, he will definitely be UM’s go to guy. The strength of this unit and the reason for hope at Michigan is definitely the o-line. All five starters have 90+ OVR’s and their skill should make for a slighter learning curve for the backfield.

The defense is the strength of this team. Gone are both 99 OVR DE’s and three of the starters from last year’s secondary, but plenty of talent returns. They have a great LB corps which returns five players with starting experience, headlined by ILB Josh Gilmore. Gilmore is simply a stud, there’s no other way to describe him. Henry Bradford and Bryan Callahan must fill in the void at DE, and Jason Jean and Jamar Wilson get their chance to play at the safety positions. If Michigan is to have any chance to contend for a title this year this unit needs to be stout.

Sure UM is ranked 2nd to start the year but that has more to do with last year’s success than anything to do with this squad. We play all 3 fellow Big 10 user teams this season, we’re undefeated in conference play over the last 2 seasons, it’ll be hard making it 3 seasons. Tennessee is our other user game, Hood-Noknee match-ups are always instant classics. 2014 should be an interesting season in Ann Arbor, plenty of new faces for the country to get used to seeing in the Maize & Blue.

Just got off the practice field, it's official, true freshmen Sid Kerr is Michigan's starting QB. He follows in the footsteps of Chad Henne and Tate Forcier as QB's who started at the beginning of their first seasons. He looks to be the real deal, just another in the long line of great UM QB's. Micah Richardson and Leslie Cutler each won roles in the backfield, and Coach Hood came away very impressed with his LB corps. Should be an intriguing season in Ann Arbor
