Miami Loses Heartbreaker to Open 2015

Hurricanes are dejected after Sean Brantley catches the game-winning touchdown on the last play of the game

The preseason #12 Miami Hurricanes opened the 2015 season hosting the #4 Michigan Wolverines. This much anticipated battle matched two reloading/rebuilding teams together in the rain in South Florida. Miami lost 9 starters on defense and Michigan's vaunted offense would provide a huge test. In an incredibly evenly matched game, 2 first downs, 10 yards of offense, :12 of time of possession, 4 points would be all that would separate these teams, and the game would come down to the last play.

Michigan drew first blood, scoring on their second possession of the game when Sid Kerr found Brandon Williams for a 25-yard touchdown pass with :17 remaining in the opening quarter. Miami couldn't make much of their first possession as they were feeling the Wolverines defense out. Miami's second possession would prove fruitful, as the Canes were able to march down into the Red Zone, but would stall at the Wolverines' 8 yard line and Adam Everett split the uprights for a 25-yard field goal. Michigan would respond 1:28 later when fullback Lawrence Spicer scored on a 6-yard run to put Michigan up 14-3 with 2:55 to play in the half. Miami took a little over two and a half minutes to respond when rising star Darrell Marquardt would find one of his big receivers, Art Felder, on a perfectly thrown 26-yard corner route to make the halftime score 14-10.

Miami would receive the second half kickoff and put together a nice drive, but once again come up short of the end zone settling for a 36-yard Everett field goal. The two red zone trips that Miami had to settle for field goals would prove costly in the end. 3:01 after Miami drew to within 1-point, on kicker/punter Darrell Wyatt's 32-yard field goal. So, with Michigan leading 17-13, we headed to the fourth quarter. On the first play of the fourth, Marquardt and Felder hooked up again, this time from 30 yards and Miami had their first lead of the game, 20-13 with 5:54 to play. 1:35 later, Spicer would score his second touchdown of the game on a 4 yard run to put Michigan back on top. The two teams would then exchange possessions with no points and the Wolverines would punt the ball back to Miami. The Canes then put together a nice drive and star running back Garrett Kirby would punch it in from the 4 yard line with 1:25 to play to put Miami up 27-24. Michigan would then show their championship mettle as they would convert third downs and call their final timeout to setup a game-tying field goal attempt with :03 left. Coach Alexander decided to ice Wyatt and called his final timeout. Fearing a fake, he sent his defense out, but Michigan came out in a formation he didn't feel they were prepared for, so Miami took an offsides penalty and that setup the final play for Michigan on Miami's 6 yard line. Michigan came out in a 4-wide formation, Sean Brantley ran a slant just in front of Miami's star linebacker, Danny Nicholson, Kerr threw a low hard pass, Brantley dove and caught it at Nicholson's feet in the end zone giving Michigan a 31-27 win.

Miami fell to 0-1 and will travel to Central Florida next week in search of their first win of 2015.
