    2015 Penn State Nittany Lions

    Penn State vs Connecticut

Penn State bounces back from a tough week one loss to Florida State to beat the Huskies 24-10. The Nittany Lions jumped out of the gate quickly by scoring 24 points in the first half, but were held scoreless the rest of they way. The offense was without Watkins for most of the game as he got hurt on the first drive. A reason for concern if you are a Nittany Lions fan is the lack of pass defense displayed against the Huskies. Penn State gave up 288 yards passing, including a 71 yarder, to a normally inept passing squad. After Connecticut scored on the first play of the game it was all Penn State as they reeled off 24 unanswered. UConn would add a second half field goal to make the final 24-10.

    Penn State vs Pittsburgh

    Penn State vs Pittsburgh

Penn State stayed in the state of Pennsylvania to take on rival Pitt this week. The Nittany Lions hadn't played their in state rival in a few years and they wanted to leave a lasting impression and did just that. Pitt would get the ball first and score on the first drive of the game and after that it was like there was only one team. Penn State would go on to hang up 44 points and amass nearly 500 yards of total offense, including no turnovers, which the Nittany Lions has struggled with so far in the season. The defense also played exceptionally well despite the opening touchdown drive. The Nittany Lions defense only gave up 144 total yards and forced 1 turnover. Jeff Watkins had an outstanding game as he averaged 17 yards per carry and led his team to victory.

    Penn State vs Northwestern

    Penn State vs Northwestern

Penn State was back at it after yet another devastating loss to Ohio State as they took on the Northwestern Wildcats. Penn State struggled once again this time on defense, and it seems each side of the ball takes turns struggling. The defense allowed a season high 31 points despite only giving up 233 yards. Part of the problem the defense had was that the offense was turning the ball over. Penn State gave the ball back to the Wildcats 3 times, a season high. The Nittany Lions were also a terrible 2-7 on third down conversions, an area they are normally very good at. Despite all that Penn State was able to come away with a victory, but they certainly had to sweat for it. After a fumble return for a touchdown put the Wildcats up by one point Penn State took the field with just over four minutes left in the game. Watkins led the team down into scoring range where they would at least kick a game winning field goal. Instead they were able to punch it in the endzone on a Cody Wilson run with 40 seconds left. After the two point conversion Penn State was up 38-31 and that would be the final.

    Penn State vs Minnesota

    Penn State vs Minnesota

Penn State took to the road to play the Golden Gophers hoping to tune into shape before the big showdown with undefeated Michigan. Penn State was certainly not looking past Minnesota as they put on an offensive clinic to the tune of 509 total yards including 38 first half points before they rested up the starters for next week. The defense however did struggle once again giving up well over 300 yards of offense to the Gophers. Penn State will need to be much better on defense down the stretch if they hope to make it into a BCS Bowl. Jeff Watkins was the story of the game as the sophomore quarterback who has had his ups and downs this season, but really played outstanding in this game today. The Penn State QB was 13-19 for 219 yards passing and had 15 carries for 148 yards and three touchdowns. Along with the defense, Watkins will need to play good if Penn State hopes to upset Michigan next week. Penn State let the backups get a lot of action in the second half as the cruised to a 45-17 win brining their season record to 4-2 (2-1) on the season.

    Penn State vs Michigan

    Penn State vs Michigan

Penn State came into the game against Michigan looking to knock off the undefeated Wolverines. Last season the Michigan offense dominated the Nittany Lions in Ann Arbor, and Penn State was looking for some revenge. Penn State had gotten off to a bad start in Big Ten play by losing to Ohio State and has started to crawl its way out of the 0-1 hole but needed a win a gainst Michigan in a bad way.

Michigan received the ball to start the game and moved the ball into the rezone. Penn State was clearly shaken early and it looked bad right from the start. After Michigan had the ball to around the ten yard line Penn State got the first big break of the game. Michigan ran an option around the end, but when Kerr was caught he had the ball punched out from behind. The Nittany Lions jumped on the loose ball and got the early momentum. This was the first of five Sid Kerr turnovers on what would prove not to be his finest outing as the Michigan quarterback.

    Early Fumble for the Lions

The two teams would exchange punts after some solid defense and then Penn State would look to draw first blood. Watkins would lead his offense down the field and would beat the Wolverines defense through the air. He would hook up with Slotback Douglas for the TD and 7-0 lead. Penn State would kick off to the Wolverines and lady luck would once again be on the side of the Nittany Lions. After breaking a tackle the Michigan returner bounced outside, he was met with a hard hit by a Nittany Lion cover man. The ball was jarred loose and Scott scooped it up and took it in for the big 14-0 Penn State lead.

    Big Game Changing Fumble

The quarter would come to an end with the score still at 14-0 Penn State. Penn State's defense would step up big yet again this time thanks to their much maligned pass defense. Sid Kerr would throw a pass but the Nittany Lions would be there to take it away. Penn State would only be able to manage a field goal following the turnover, but it would give them a three score and 17 point lead. Michigan would answer with its first score thanks to a nicely run option to Brantley from 22 yards out.

    Michigan Touchdown

Michigan's defense would come up big by stopping Penn State, but then the Penn State defense would answer right back. Bush stepped in front of an out route and took it 24 yards back for six and a 24-7 Nittany Lion lead.

    Bush Pick Six

Michigan would add another rushing touchdown before the half ended to cut the Penn State lead to 24-14. The second half would be much of the same as Penn State's defense shut out the Wolverines and the offense was efficient. Another pick six and a Watkins touchdown pass would increase the Penn State lead to 38-14 and that's how the game would finish. Penn State was far from spectacular on offense but they didn't turn the ball over which was critical. The defense was bend but don't break all game long as they forced six turnovers and only allowed 14 points as caused six turnovers, including four interceptions.

    Penn State vs Illinois

    Penn State vs Illinois

Penn State went into the game against the Illinois Fighting Illini trying to avoid a major let down following the big win against Michigan. Penn State would show no signs of overlooking Illinois in the classic sandwich game, with the game against Notre Dame next week. The Nittany Lions would really dominate the game from start to finish and Illinois never came close to giving Penn State a scare. Penn State went out and dominated early and often taking a 35-7 lead into the half and increasing it to 49-7 in the third. After the lead stretched to 42 the Nittany Lions second string got to see the field. The back ups played well but a conservative approach led to no scoring. Penn State dominated the Illini in the stats as well as on the scoreboard as they out gained Illinois 638-156. Illinois only touchdown was on a fumble recovery, so the defense was really dominant as they gave up under 100 yards passing. QB Jeff Watkins was the story for the Penn State offense as he was 14-19 252 yards and 2 TDs with a 219.8 rating through the air and had 18 carries for 197 yards and 3 TDs on the ground, good for a 10.9 ypc. Next week the Nittany Lions travel to South Bend to take on the Irish then travel to Madison to take on the Badgers.

    Penn State vs Notre Dame

    Penn State vs Notre Dame

Once again Penn State and Notre Dame play in a close offensive battle, and once again Penn State pulls off the victory. To give you an idea of the offensive output that these two teams produced, they combined for 75 points and exctly 1000 yards of offense. Not to mention the zero turnovers by both teams, to provide for an offensive slugfest. The Penn State pass defense struggled yet again as they gave up 453 yards and 5 touchdowns through the air. Jeff Watkins was spectacular for the Nittany Lions once again as he threw for 188 yards and 3 TDs and rushed for 214 yards at 9.3 yards a rush and 2 TDs. This super sophomore is turning into quite the player for the Nittany Lions. In this year's game the Irish would hold a 3 point 27-24 lead heading into the half only to be contained by the Penn State D in the second half. the Irish still amasses a good amount of yards but only managed seven points and that came with under 30 second to play. Penn State is prepared for their monster game with Wisconsin next week.

    Penn State vs Louisiana Tech

    Penn State vs Louisiana Tech

The Nittany Lions faced the clearly outmatched Louisiana tech Bulldogs in what would be a blood bath. Penn State would pour on the points and offense early and often against the inept bunch representing the WAC. Jeff Watkins and the rest of the starters would play a little over a half of football before resting the rest of the game. The Penn State offense was remarkable as they gained a stunning 652 yards of offense. Not onlt could the Bulldogs not stop the Penn State first string but they also failed to stop the second string as backup QB Cronin rushed for 119 years. Penn State ended up winning 59-7. Next week the Nittany Lions finishes the season against rival Michigan State.
