The Bruins lost a ton of talent on defense last season but look to be much better on offense, as they return the majority of their offensive starters (the one notable loss is 1,000 yard rusher Jordan James to graduation). QB-The Bruins began last season with two freshman at QB. Mark Downs held the starting job to open the season but quickly lost it after a terrible first half in a blowout loss to Oregon in which he threw two interceptions and lost a fumble on three consecutive drives. True freshman Bryan Bower came in and led the Bruins to wins over Cal, WSU, and USC. Bower will get the start to open the season. RB-UCLA lost a 1,000 yard rusher last season but has a power back in Ryan Brown and two speedy guys in Dan Jones and Jess Morton, all backs are experienced and capable so they will probably all rotate in and get touches. The Bruins will also try to get FB Rashard Wright more involved in the offense this season as well. WR/TE-The Bruins have a stellar WR corps with both starters returning this season. The only question is whether the QB will be able to get the ball downfield to them. UCLA also returns their starting TE Marco Gould from last season. OL-UCLA will start 3 seniors and 2 juniors on a veteran offensive line that looks to be much improved from last season. DL-UCLA lost both DEs from last season. The most experienced starter is a senior that only had 3 tackles last season. LB-The Bruins are young in the LB corps, as they lost all three starting LBs to graduation. DBs-UCLA lost both starting CBs and their starting SS to graduation. Filling the void are Demarcus Oliver and Matt Lewis at CB, both seniors who did not play much last season. FS Josh Evans is the lone returning starter in the defensive backfield, and Vinnie Cohen, who got a good amount of playing time last season, will start at SS. K/P-The Bruins look to have some semblance to a kicking game this year (last year's kicker graduated and had like 60 KPW). UCLA brought in JUCO JR James Johnson who actually has a decent leg. Look for him to fulfill both kicking and punting duties and the Bruins to not have to punt when faced with a 4th down at the 20-yard line. Seniors: 14 65 players total/5 under 70 14 + 5 + 3 = 22 scholarships available? Projection: 5th place finish in pac-10. If the defense comes together and their young QB clicks with the WRs they have then the Bruins could be looking at 7 or 8 wins, if they can't stop anyone, then 5 or 6 wins is likely. Goal is a win over SC and a bowl victory.
