    2015 Wolverine Preview

The Wolverines came up just short of reaching the BCS Title game for the 3rd time in 6 years last year when Ohio State behind Coach JFunk finally defeated them. That loss has stung all off-season long, Coach Hood took it to heart and has used it as inspiration for this year’s version of the Maize and Blue. Only half of last year’s starters return but this is 1 hungry group of kids.

Sid Kerr exceeded expectations as a true freshman starting every game last year, but unfortunately only slightly improved over the off-season. He will be relied on even more by Coach Hood this year, we need him to become a game changer. No other QB on the roster has ever played a down, and backup William Johnson converted from OLB so Kerr needs to stay healthy.

Leslie Cutler had a good season last year and will be relied on as UM’s main back. He will once again be in the middle of the triple option attack but will see an increase in touches. Micah Richardson needs to build on his freshmen season as he will also be carrying a bigger load. Junior Javon Bowie is likely to be the 3rd back and needs to contribute. Someone here needs to step up and be explosive, this unit is lacking that right now.

Junior Brandon Williams steps into the #1 WR role after a season in the slot and a season as the 2nd option. He should be just fine but lacks the size and leaping ability of Thad Marshall. Kyle Daniels had a good year in the slot last year and now becomes Kerr’s 2nd target. Sophomore Sean Brantley will handle slot duties but must catch the ball better and be able to hold on to it. Gordon Johnston returns at TE but will be pushed by Jason Hines. Much like the RB’s someone needs to have a breakout type season.

Only senior C Terrell Williams returns from last year’s frontline. He is 99 OVR and is the unquestioned leader of this unit. Senior Sam Dawson converted from C to LT and he will get the first shot to replace Josh Anderson. Kenny Smith steps in at left guard, the highly touted Charlie Malone is at RG, and true freshman Nick Merrill will start at RT. This unit must gel in a hurry.

Only DE Henry Bradford returns from last year. He had a solid junior season but will need to become an impact player for Caoch Hood. Fifth year senior Jermaine Thomas gets the nod at NT, and the end opposite Bradford is still up for grabs. This does not appear to be a very good unit for UM.

The LB’s should be the strength of the defense. Thomas Wesley and Ronnie Harper both return at the OLB positions. 3 year starters Josh Gilmore and Carlos Pearson are both gone but Kevin Bradley and Rob Crooks look more than ready to take over inside. Coach Hood needs the LB’s to be the real deal this year.

Reggie Rodriguez, Nick Townsend, and Jason Jean all return from last year. Townsend was a revelation in his freshman season and is the best DB Michigan has. Rodriguez must improve, and Zak Gordon has to be effective at the other corner position. There is plenty of talent at the CB depth chart, but not much experience. If the Wolverines have any shot at challenging for a National Title the pass defense MUST improve.

With a group of hungry kids and a coach who has his mind set on having his players ready. I think you may get over the Hump with OSU. I know it will be a good game. good luck this season
