Both the Wolverines and Hurricanes came into this game a little unsure of themselves but with high expectations. New players on both sides would have to quickly get adjusted. The experts predicted a tight one; and they were dead on with that prognostication.

Michigan won the toss and chose to receive. The offense sputtered on its first drive, although the Hurricanes O did the same. On their next drive the Wolverines moved the ball and Sid Kerr hit Brandon Williams for a 25 yd TD. Miami responded with a FG.

In the second quarter Leslie Cutler, UM’s top RB, went down with an injury and did not return. Kerr and Micah Richardson picked up the slack en route to taking a 14-3 lead. On the Canes’ ensuing possession the passing game came alive and Darrell Marquardt found Art Felder in the end zone to make 14-10 at the half.

The third quarter was a defensive stalemate as each team only put up a FG, 17-13 Wolverines heading into the final frame.

Miami scored quick to make it 20-17, their first lead of the game. Kerr broke loose for some long runs on Michigan’s ensuing drive which culminated in a quick TD, 24-20. Marquardt then led the Canes on a phenomenal three minute TD drive which put them up 27-24 with 1:25 remaining.

Effective passing by Kerr put the Wolverines at the 11 with three seconds left. Coach Hood was unsure of kicking since the ball was on the right hash but sent the kicking team out anyways. Miami iced the kicker. Hood then sent out the offense, catching JCA off guard. Miami was out of timeouts and had to go offsides since their FG block team was out. That moved the ball up to the 6. The Wolverines came out in a 3-wide set, speedy sophomore Sean Brantley ran a crossing route. Kerr faced heavy pressure up the middle and had to throw off his back foot. The throw was low, Brantley dove and caught it for the win, just in front of Hurricane defenders.

It’s the play of the year, truly phenomenal when considering Brantley’s recruiting came down to Michigan and Miami and after the amount of criticism he got after suffering from butter fingers and fumblitis last season.
