    Wisconsin 38, Kentucky 30

LEXINGTON- The Wisconsin Badgers opened up the 2016 season with a unconvincing 38-30 win over Kentucky. The Badgers seemingly had control going into the fourth quarter, ahead 24-17, but gave up several big plays late to let the outcome get a bit hairy. The defense, expected to be a strength going into the year, allowed 346 yards to the Wildcats' balanced attack. Freshman quarterback Eddie Everett was solid in his debut, completing 18 of 29 for 246 yards and a score.

    Wisconsin 38, Mississippi State 35

STARKVILLE- After falling behind 14-0 the Wisconsin Badgers recover to avoid an upset bid from Mississippi State with a 38-35 win. The key play of the game was a 96 yard interception return from cornerback James Hall late in the third quarter which game the Badgers their first lead of the game at 31-28. After a quick three-and-out from the Bulldogs, David Bryant went 41 yards for a score to put the game out of reach for MSU. True freshman quarterback Eddie Everett led the rally with 306 passing yards on 22 completions.

MADISON- Led by cornerback James Hall’s two pick-sixes, Wisconsin defeated Georgia 35-17. The victory moves the #7 Badgers to 3-0 into the bye and before the crucial portion of their schedule- trips to Madison from #3 Michigan and #5 Ohio State. The Bulldogs, who outgained the Badgers, fall to 1-2.

The Badgers used a 21 point outburst in a two minute time frame in the first half to push out to a 28-3 lead. Joe Hall intercepted Georgia quarterback Eric Thomas twice and took both back for scores during the run. In the last two weeks, Hall has returned three interceptions back for touchdowns. The picks were two of four that Thomas threw in the first half and dug a big hole for the visiting Bulldogs.

After Thomas found Don Patrick on a 62-yard scoring pass very early in the third quarter, Georgia closed the gap to 28-17. Wisconsin responded with a long scoring drive which was capped by Richard Anderson’s one yard touchdown run. The Bulldogs quickly marched down the field before stalling on fourth down inside the Badger ten yard line. The Badgers’ running game was then able to chew up the entire fourth quarter, helping to account for 216 total rushing yards for the day.

    Wisconsin 34, Minnesota 27

MINNEAPOLIS- Wisconsin again avoided an upset bid from rival Minnesota in a 34-27 triumph. The Badgers move to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten while the Gophers drop to 2-2 and 1-1.

After 17 all tie at halftime, Wisconsin pushed out to a lead in the third quarter after a Donta Marshall field goal and would hold it the rest of the game but not without some tension. After a Gopher field goal cut the lead to seven, Minnesota recovered the onside kick with under a minute left. Defensive end Shawn Bennett put an end to the Minnesota hopes with his sixth sack of the game on the final play. The All-American candidate resided in the Gopher backfield all day and accounted for ten total tackles.

Running back Chris Young, who again missed game time with an injury, ran for 108 yards and a touchdown.

    Wisconsin 24, Indiana 7

MADISON- After coming into the season labeled as the best defense in the Coach Tuco era, the Badger defenders finally lived up to thier billing. It took six games, but the Wisky D completely shut down an opponent by putting the clamps on Indiana in a 24-7 win.

Not including a long touchdown pass in the third quarter, the Hoosiers had under 200 total yards offense and were stopped on downs twice inside the Badger ten yard line. Defensive End Shannon Bennet again led the way for the D, registering eight tackles and three sacks in what is shaping up to be an All-American season.

Wisconsin cranked out 368 yards of offense, headed up by quarterback Eddie Everett's 249 passing yards. Everett accounted for two scores, one thru the air and an 11-yard touchdown run.

    Wisconsin 31, Michigan State 0

MADISON- You're not going to see a better defensive performance than the effort Wisconsin put forth in their 31-0 thumping of Michigan State. The offensive stat lines for the Spartans read:

    First Downs- 2
    Rushing Yards- 4
    3rd down conversions- 0-6
    Total Yards- 51

The Spartans did not cross the 50 yard line and the game was effectively over after Badger defensive end Shannon Bennett picked off a Simon Fletcher pass and rumbled 37 yards for a TD on Sparty's first series.

Bennett has been outstanding over the last three games. The Wisconsin defensive end has accumulated 17 tackles, nine tackles for loss, nine sacks, an interception, two forced fumbles and a touchdown in the three conference games for the Badgers.

    Wisconsin 31, Notre Dame 14

SOUTH BEND- Wisconsin used a dominant second half to down a reeling Notre Dame team by a 31-14 count in Notre Dame Stadium. The fifth ranked Badgers moved to 9-1 and 6-1 in the Big Ten. Wisky has conference game remaining, rival Iowa who comes to Madison next.

After the teams were knotted at 14 at halftime, the Bagders took control of the game in third quarter. Running backs Chris Young and Derrian Bryant both scored on short touchdown runs while the defense shut down the Irish offense, not allowing a point in the second half. ND was limited to just 185 total yards and seven first downs.

    Wisconsin 42, Iowa 35

MADISON- In a wild game in which the respective teams were tied six times, Wisconsin was able to outlast Iowa in a 42-35 win. With the victory, the Badgers finish Big Ten play 7-1 for second consecutive season. They sit in an excellent position for a Rose Bowl bid no matter what the outcome of the Michigan-Ohio State game.

The two teams combined for 894 yards and both moved the ball at will, a bit of a departure for the Badger defenders, who had not allowed more than 20 points since the Minnesota game five weeks ago. Wisconsin had difficulty getting pressure on Hawkeye quarterback Jake Roberts, who had a career day throwing for 377 yards and five touchdowns. He threw just four incompletions and was sacked just twice by the vaunted Wisconsin defensive line.

While not as sharp as Roberts, Wisky QB Eddie Everett was good enough, passing for 315 and four touchdowns.

    Wisconsin 45, Washington 28

PASADENA- Wisconsin closed out the Coach Tuco coaching era with a 45-28 win over Washington. The victory gives the Badgers a 12-1 record, the best under Tuco in his five years as head coach.

The Badgers were never really threatened by the Huskies, who snuck into the game with a pedestrian 6-6 mark, winners of a very mediocre Pac Ten conference. Wisconsin jumped out to an early 24-7 halftime lead and trade scores with Washington the rest of the way to account for the game's final score.

Tuco resigned shortly after the Rose Bowl only stating that he will not renew his contract with Wisconsin. He did not mention where he will coach next season but an answer would come in July.
