    2016 Amateur Draft Review - Part 2
By Bob Frapples - Senior Writer for The Sporting News

Welcome back sportsfans. Bob Frapples here with 2016 draft grades for picks 11-20. To be fair, this draft was loaded and the picks in the middle part of the 1st rd kind of went chalk. Nothing overtly seperating one guy from another, but more of a team picking a guy that best fits need for their organization as draft grades were about even on most of these dudes. That said, me saying chalk and everyone gets A's... News at 11 does not an interesting article make. So I will nitpick a little more and challenge a few of these but in all, solid picks all around. So without ado...

    1st Rd - Pick #11 - Milwaukee Brewers
    CF - Clark Francis
Overall: This Tucson AZ native is a bit older then most of this draft class who has solid power peripherals and makes solid contact. Good speed on the basepaths and solid range in the outfield. Gets a bit lost in CF but that is workable.
Outlook Based on Flimsy Evidence: Kind of quiet and blends in a bit but he was taken to be a quick mover. With his advanced age, Smooth is gambling that he will close the actual/potential gap quickly. If not he will be overaged soon and will rumble on the road to flameout. I think he will do fine but a bit of a gamble here based on advanced age and act vs. pots.
    Grade: B+

    1st Rd - Pick #12 - Minnesota Twins
    SP - Enrico Lujan
Overall: College junior draft eligible Puerto Rican pitcher that is a Gemini and likes take out deli. Solid horse of a starter with solid intangibles, top end fastball speed, and 4 plus pitches. Control needs some work but he projects well. Very projectable.
Outlook Based on Flimsy Evidence: Crap. Just what the Twins need is another top shelf pitcher. I like what they are doing here. The one thing I would work on is keeping that movement where it is or higher. He tends to overthink sometimes and not just throw and his pitches lack the late movement they need to have to be successful at the big league level. Love the pick.
    Grade: A

    1st Rd - Pick #13 - Pittsburgh Pirates
    CF - Santiago Martinez
Overall: 20 year old OF is a winner. He obsesses on it. He dreams about it. He wants it so bad that sometimes his break neck speed gets him into a few injury problems. Overall I like the guy. Solid projections across the board and he is an elite defender at all three OF positions.
Outlook Based on Flimsy Evidence: Pirates go the college path this time and are hoping for better results. The one concern to watch out for is that is he willing to put the work in that is necessary to be able to win? You don't win because you just want to. You have to work on it.
    Grade: B+

    1st Rd - Pick #14 - Miami Marlins
    SP - Nikolaj Paulson
Overall: Polished college righty that has good velocity and a nice sinker/slider repetoire. Nice movement that belies his ground ball tendancies. Needs to work on his conditioning to work deeper into the game.
Outlook Based on Flimsy Evidence: Sometimes picking substance over future flash works out well. Paulson looks like a solid future #2 SP and should move quickly . Kudos!
    Grade: A

    1st Rd - Pick #15 - Los Angeles Angels
    2B - Colin Spence
Overall: Drool, drool, drool. 4th best player in this draft. Should have went after the 2 pitchers and Scotty Clay and before Lynwood (#Oriole Raj freak out alert) Does everything above average, has clean intanglibles and will move quickly. The only knock is he doesn't hit homeruns. I will take his elite contact/eye/K/Gap and watch him lead the league in doubles and triples. Could work a little more at turning the double play.
Outlook Based on Flimsy Evidence: I love Colin Spence. I want Colin Spence to marry my daughter and to run for president. I think Colin can solve world hunger and align the heavens. I think he can front "Wyld Stallions" and fly to the moon without a spacesuit. Colin Spence is King!
    Grade: A++

    1st Rd - Pick #16 - New York Mets
    SP - Arturo Hernandez
Overall: Control specialist College lefty with above average stamina and has 4 above average pitches. Smart, loyal rah rah guy that paints the corners and paints his insides with Ho-Ho's
Outlook Based on Flimsy Evidence: Needs to be motivated to get the best out of him. I worry about his movement when you look at his stuff and overall pitch potential. Solid #3 or #4 SP. Not too bad
    Grade: B

    1st Rd - Pick #17 - Arizona Diamondbacks
    RF - Juan Chavez
Overall: Hard trying college outfielder that has the contact/power combo to hold down a corner outfield spot. Smooth on the bases and an above average defender. Loves Cheetos.
Outlook Based on Flimsy Evidence: Fast-mover as the D-backs look for ways to fill in for Upton and Morrison who are no longer in the organization. Need to make sure that the coaches keep it easy for him. Not the smartest guy in the world. I really like this pick.
    Grade: A

    1st Rd - Pick #18 - Washington Nationals
    1B - Rafael Rodriquez
Overall: Slugging high school 1st baseman that is surprising agile defending 1st base. Good power stroke with good projections. Doesn't have a lot of holes in his swing but the big question is how he will adjust as the competition level increases.
Outlook Based on Flimsy Evidence: In a draft as deep as this one, not sure why you would gamble on potential to actual gaps with a guy like this when more advanced options were still around. If he hits he will be nice. Nationals will need a lot of patience with him.
    Grade: C+

    1st Rd - Pick #19 - Cleveland Indians
    2B - Martin Camacho
Overall: Above average in most everything, ++ speed, and a solid make-up. I understand why he lasted this long as he doesn't have one sexy standout tool but he does everything really well. Nickname is Macho.
Outlook Based on Flimsy Evidence: Clean prospect what can I say. Mature for his age and Indians will look to put him on the fast track. Nice work.
    Grade: A-

    1st Rd - Pick #20 - San Francisco Giants
    SP - Sang Your-Park
Overall: Nice pitch and catch starter with ++ control. He carries himself on the mound quite well and doesn't get too rattled. The biggest thing I see he needs to work on is overall pitch quality. Right now he is good for a #4 starer. Very coachable and wants to get better which is a good thing
Outlook Based on Flimsy Evidence: Giants rotation is starting to age a bit so it makes sense to try to stock the minors with a solid starter like Park. He isn't ace material but drafting at 20, you don't expect that. Like his control and Giants hope he grows into the rest of his skills.
    Grade: B+/A-

I like that this has now became a Dugout verb. I got even more pissed when I saw that Hegwood made the All Star team this year...

The Padres owner before you didn't bother doing any work for the draft. His pick, which was right before mine, therefore became auto'd by the league members that help with the draft. The thing that irritated me and to this day still irritated me is that that lazy GM got to benefit by having the league research and select the best player for him and he didn't have to do anything..... edit edit edit edit.....

Now Hegwood'd is a verb everytime someone snakes someone else's pick right before they draft. heh :)

The problem with your logic is that inactive guys won't be around for long. So penalizing a new owner taking over by giving them bad prospects will never happen.

Hmmm... Thought Francis was the most sure thing in the draft outside of Abbott and maybe Clay, offensively speaking at least.

I like Francis and so far so good in your minors. he just has a shorter window to close the actuals to pot gaps is all, which it looks like he is doing. =-)

Yeah... Got him in AAA already... Will let him run 2-3 sims there and will probably pull him up when rosters expand.
