The Gamecocks return nearly everybody on both sides of the ball and if some players get better with a year of experience this could be a special year for Coach Petersen and his squad. Coach Petersen will get to win 64 this season with three wins which will make him the All-Time wins lead at South Carolina. Last year the biggest issue for the Gamecocks was turnovers as they turned the ball over too many times and didn't get enough turnovers so that has been the big emphasis in Spring and Summer practices. Antonio Matthews will look to step his game up this year, as he didn't do enough for his team to be successful a year ago. He should have plenty of help as he has many outstanding playmakers such as HB Jason Byrd, WR Michael Davis, and TE Anthony Ross. The defense lost a couple of key players but the players coming back should help make up for the losses. The biggest key for the defense will be the defensive line. The line hasn't produced much in the past few years and if this defense wants to be good then the line will have to make things happen by getting pressure on the QB and closing down running lanes. The linebackers should be very good led by MLB Ken Bowen who is one of the best linebackers in the country. The back half with feature three very good and athletic safeties that should create a lot of havoc for opposing teams. With three of South Carolina's biggest games coming at home the Gamecocks should have a chance to make a run at the SEC East title.
