    2017 South Carolina Gamecocks

In 2016 the South Carolina Gamecocks had the best year in their history going 12-1 winning the Sugar Bowl and finishing the season ranked #2 in the nation and claimed the top spot in the rankings for five weeks. Coach Petersen became the winningest coach in school history after beating Auburn the third week of the season. USC lost four All-Americans, including a three-year starter at QB, ANotnio Matthews and two-time Lou Groza Award winner John Holt. So how can they possibly hope to follow that season up in 2017?
On offense the Gamecocks could feature one of the best rushing attacks in the nation. The offensive line is one of the best in school history and its four seniors should help open up running lanes for whatever back is carrying the ball. Part of the success running the ball depends on the health of Senior Jason Byrd. Byrd has probably more talent and skills than any other back in the nation but his problems are two fold. One, he has terrible stamina and can barely stay on the field for three or four plays at a time before coming to the sideline, and second his season has been cut short due to shoulder injuries every season he has been on campus. If Byrd stays healthy and plays up to his potential not only could he win USC their second Heisman ever, but he could also lead them to their first National Title. The biggest question will be at QB where they will have to replace three year starter Antonio Matthews. Either senior Andre Garrett or junior BJ Taylor (who had gained some playing experience last year). Overall the offense has potential to be very good but could also fall on their faces.
Last year, South Carolina had the best defensive performance they have had under Coach Petersen only giving up 16 points per game and allowing 300 total yards rushing, along with leading the nation in turnovers. USC's key to success on defense is their defensive line, and All-American Luke Motley will return for his junior year after breaking the South Carolina school record with 11 sacks. Despite losing four-year starter, MLB Ken Bowen the Gamecocks should have a great group of linebackers that will be key in making many plays. Strong Safeties Will Townsend and Drew Parker bring a unique and explosive spark to the Gamecock defense. Those two will be give opposing offenses nightmares with their versatility and skill.
