    The Dugout

Beginning with opening day of the 2024 season we will be implementing some new rules within MLB which will hopefully increase competitiveness, facilitate trading, decrease the effectiveness of tanking, and hold MLB managers accountable for poor performance.

These rules do not apply for the NBL, only the MLB. I certainly hope everyone understands the need for these changes and embraces them. After heated discussions with the leadership team we have agreed upon the following.

Until now we had zero accountability for poor performance by GM's. Profit and participation were our only focus, but now that we have seen the effectiveness of repeated poor performances with no repercussions, rules were needed to be put into place.

In addition, the clear difference between the top few picks in the draft compared to the later rounds, have made it easy for a team to stockpile enormous talent while in essence being bad on the field. By enacting a draft lottery, tanking is not necessarily rewarded any longer.

Both of these changes should also (hopefully) increase the willingness of teams to trade. Now, if you don't get better, you get fired. Now that you aren't assured of a top pick in the draft, maybe you will trade away some talent to stock your system instead of stockpiling high draft picks.

    Rule Change #1

Effective at the end of the 2024 season: A team with 5 consecutive losing seasons (sub .500) without showing improvement in EACH of the final 3 seasons will be demoted to the NBL.

    Example: Win %- .480, .450, .435, .400, .385- This GM is fired

    Example: Win %- .480, .450, .455, .474, .480- This GM is safe

    Example: Win %- .480, .450, .440, .500, .400- This GM is safe

    Rule Change #2

Effective for the 2025 First Year Player Draft a weighted lottery will be used for the 1st round of the draft. This lottery will include non-playoff teams. Worst record is awarded 20 balls, the next team 19 balls, etc, etc.

I would have loved to have been the reason for this rule change. Unfortunately i'm just a lost soul who couldn't even get tanking right :(

I would recommend weighting the lottery a greater amount toward the worst teams. In TCBL, we did a lottery similar to this to simulate free agency. Here's the spreadsheet showing how it worked out.

As you can see, the weighting worked in the grand scheme of the average draft position(ADP tab) for the most part since we did it for every round and all positions. But looking at just the 1st round, the Red Sox and Twins both had the most numbers(or balls) but ended up with the 17th and 20th picks. The top 3 picks were the Mets, Rockies, and Cubs and they finished 11th, 14th, and 16th in the standings. This is because these guys only had 6.5% of the total numbers.

That was fine for what we were doing since we had a rookie draft separate from this, but that would be killer for what we're looking at here. These odds are slightly better at 9.5% but still gives the 11-20 normally placed teams too good of a shot at top 5 picks. You want to discourage tanking and I'm with you at that but the bad teams should have much better odds than this, imo. I would focus more on awarding teams with a percentage first and then figuring out the balls after that. Something like:

    1- 15%
    2- 12.5%
    3- 10%
    4- 8.5%
    5- 7%
    6- 6%
    7- 5%
    8- 4.5%
    9- 4%
    10- 3.75%
    11- 3.5%
    12- 3.25%
    13- 3%
    14- 2.75%
    15- 2.5%
    16- 2.25%
    17- 2%
    18- 1.75%
    19- 1.5%
    20- 1.25%

    With 400 balls:

    1- 60
    2- 50
    3- 40
    4- 34
    5- 28
    6- 24
    7- 20
    8- 18
    9- 16
    10- 15
    11- 14
    12- 13
    13- 12
    14- 11
    15- 10
    16- 9
    17- 8
    18- 7
    19- 6
    20- 5

If you compare it to the NBA lottery:

    1- 25%
    2- 19.9%
    3- 15.6%
    4- 11.9%
    5- 8.8%
    6- 6.3%
    7- 4.3%
    8- 2.8%
    9- 1.7%
    10- 1.1%
    11- 0.8%
    12- 0.7%
    13- 0.6%
    14- 0.5%

Interesting points. I'll definitely keep this in consideration before the actual system is implemented

Took me 10 but that is because I was a inept ootp owner and made every bad move in the book. Twice actually and sometimes 3 times

I wouldn't mind seeing some sort of lottery in the NBL as well. Obviously can't demote someone for sucking since there's nowhere to put them, but the lottery may make it so some teams actually try to be competitive instead of always having the same team have the top pick and being completely inept in every form of competing.

While I def agee that this is long over-due... There was must much discussion about activity, or lack-there from managers previously. It's used as a criteria for evaluating call-ups from the NBL but it is going to be seriously considered for owners who sit back, export and simply don't contribute otherwise?

It's just that participation can be somewhat difficult to define and quantify. I would agree though that there are some GMs that I never see post here at all, and I would like to see them. It's a little weird to be playing games with some of these guys I know nothing about.

We've been over this and the majority are not in favor. There is a post here from before you got here called participation point proposal or something similar. Read over it to see the discussion

I, for one, embrace Jesse becoming the new Stern figure that will rig our drafts based on what he believes is best for the league.
