On another forum I read, there was a 12 page post dedicated to answering this.

My question...are you guys smarter than those guys?

Following PEMDAS I wanna say 2 but I'm pretty sure their must be something more or maybe its a bunch of math nuts challenging the rule.

    PEMDAS

    48 / 2 (9+3)

    So 9+3 = 12

    48 / 2 (12)

    2(12) = 24

    48/24 = 2

    2

    48 / 2 = 24

    24 (12) = 288

    288

It's true, you can input the same exact equation into 2 different calculators and it will give you 2 different answers based on the way its programmed

What does that have to do with implied multiplication?

Any number next to a parenthesis is implied multiplication, meaning that you do not have to show the "x".. so technically you could rewrite the equation to look as:

    48 ÷ 2 x (9+3)

    Step 1: Parenthesis

    48 ÷ 2 x (9+3) = 48 ÷ 2 x (12)

Step 2: Division (Based on Order from Left to Right)

    48 ÷ 2 x (12) = 24 x 12

    Step 3: Multiplication

    24 x 12 = 288

Hmm, I thought the implied multiplication would come before the division. That's what happens when you haven't had a math class in 16 years.

"implied" multiplication gets preference over other multiplication/division in some calculators and teachings. Thats what I was referring to

Yes you are correct Hova. TI's older graphing calculators were coded so that implied multiplication was given priority, but it was meant to only simply typing things in such as fractions. Once they realized that this was misleading and causing incorrect answers, they changed their programming so that implied and explicit multiplication was given the same priority.
