The Denver Broncos are gearing up to make another run in 2014. After a disappointing performance in the New York City, Peyton Manning and the Broncos offense looks to do much of the same from last year. The Broncos added Aqib Talib, DeMarcus Ware, and TJ Ward to the defense. By making these acquisitions it's very apparent that Denver and GM RHIGHT are going all in this year. Stayed tuned for positional breakdowns to come in the next few days as the Broncos are battling it out in 2 -a-days as we speak.
THE 2014 OAKLAND RAIDERS
The Raiders went through another terrible season in 2013 going 4-12. They ended up fourth in a strong AFC West where three of the four teams made it to the playoffs. Darren McFadden had another injury plagued year, and the defense lost arguably their best player in Tyvon Branch during the second game of the season. Their defense started hot, and then fizzled out. Their offense showed flashes of big play making ability until Terrell Pryor’s injury sidelined him. Coach Dennis Allen blew it again for the 2nd season, and had nothing but excuses and tons of blame for everyone but himself. He miraculously kept his job but He hasn’t shown he can lead the team. This year is make or break for Coach Allen. Can he get it done?
Free Agency and Offseason Acquisitions
The Raiders had the most cap space in the NFL when free agency started but it did not assist them at all. In the early hours of free agency the Raiders botched trying to re-sign their top offensive and defensive players. DE Lamar Houston chose to go to Chicago instead of re-sign with Oakland, then Jared Valdeer was reportedly low balled during the whole process so he went to sign with the Arizona Cardinals. They didn’t sign one single big game changer, but lots of veterans who have had a lot of success in their career.
--- On Offense
- In a surprising move they re-signed Darren McFadden when most thought they would let him go. Due to his loyalty to the Raiders and Raider Nation, he came back for less money than what other teams were offering. They also added veteran RB from the Jacksonville Jaguars Maurice Jones-Drew who should help keep McFadden healthy splitting carries this season and create what Raider Nation hopes is a 3 headed monster between McFadden, Jones-Drew, and Marcel Reece.
- Proven QB Matt Schaub was added to the raiders via trade with the Houston Texans. Despite an terrible 2013, the Raiders are hopeful that Schaub can provide leadership to the Raiders Offense.
- WR James Jones from the Packers was able to be signed and looks to jump right into the #2 Role on offense. Jones' history of success should bolster a less-than-stellar Raiders Wide Receiver group.
- OT Donald Penn - Donald Penn was signed and will fill the role as LT. He was great as a Buccaneer, and will do great as a Raider. He was what the Raiders needed and though he isn’t an upgrade, he isn’t a downgrade.
-DE Justin Tuck- The two time super bowl winning defensive end is unhappy the Giants let him go and is out to prove he still has some left in the tank. Offenses will still have to look out for him and move extra blocking to. He will open up a lot of sacks for others on the team. A ten sack season is very reachable for him.
-DE LaMarr Woodley- After a couple injury plagued seasons the Steelers let Woodley go. He just like Tuck has a lot to prove and a lot left. He will be opposite Tuck and they will form one of the better DE attacks in the league.
-CB Carlos Rodgers- Rodgers has had success at corner playing on the outside and the slot. Last year the Raiders didn’t have that kind of versatility. He might start the season as the third corner, but will handle the slot great and provide depth at corner.
-FS Charles Woodson (re-signed)- The 17 year vet showed he could still make plays last year. He had a great year and re-signed for what it looks like his last season. He is a leader of men and one not just the secondary, but whole defense and team look up to. The Raiders are only better with him on the field. He will hopefully break the most TDs by a defender this year also.
The Raiders held the 5th overall pick and selected OLB Khalil Mack. Some said he is the top defender to come out of college. With the 2nd pick the Raiders feel lucky that Derek Carr fell to them in the second round. They also drafted a mountain of a man in OG Gabe Jacksonwho comes in at 6’3”, 360 lbs. He is possibly the best guard in the draft and the Raiders needed a lot of help there. He was a two time All American. They never addressed their need at wide receiver, but seemed to have had a solid draft, with a few potential starters for next season.
Be smart and turnover free on offense as much as possible. Lean on the three headed monster at RB and groom Derek Carr until he he ready to take over as starting QB. Defense has many veterans so forcing turnovers and not giving up silly plays and lots of points should be an every week goal.
WIshful Thinking Record - 10-6 (wildcard playoffs)
Realistic Record - 6-10 (Coach Allen fired)
Raiders defeat the Texans at home 6-33
The Raiders win big in Oakland's home opener. The defense once again rose to the occasion holding the Texans to 165 yards of offense. Shaub did a nice job against his old team as starter Derek Carr recovers from injury. MJD put in work on the ground to keep the offense balanced. That attack would pay dividend in the stages of the game as the opponents defense was getting tired. The Raiders defense didn't produce any sacks, but the provided enough pressure to cause Fitzpatrick to make a few errant throws. DJ Hayden would benefit from this snatching 3 picks. Branch and Woodson would chip in with 1 each. The team travels to face the Tom Brady led undefeatedPatriots next week. The secondary will need to be on point to keep Brady and company in check.
Raiders go on the road and defeat the Patriots 30-6
The Raiders went in the Gillette stadium and take down undefeated New England Patriots. The teams were just a were tops in the league in term of offense and defense. Both were in the top 10 with both being in the top 5 in one category. This game figured to be a defensive battle and it was in the first quarter. The offense finally got going and never really looked back. Carr came back into the starting lineup and didn't disappoint, putting up 270 yards with 2 TDs and no picks. James Jones had a beast of a game with 162 yards on 4 receptions with 2 TDs. The defense would carry last weeks performance into this weeks picking off Brady 4 times and sacking him twice. The DC coordinator was asked how his defense was able to coral the potent passing game of the Patriots. He said that they just looked at what they were trying to do and made the call accordingly. We asked the OC if he thought there was any concern about the running game not be able to get going, he said that there will always be game where things won't go as planned. That doesn't mean we will not keep trying. We have to stay balanced. The Raider are at home as they host the Miami Dolphins in Week 4.
Raiders Harass Rivers in Win at HomeThe defense sacked Rivers 7 times in their 24-3 win over the Chargers. Carr had a descent game throwing 212 yards and a TD. Denarius Moore caught most of the passes with 6 receptions for 70 yards. The Chandler said he like some of things they were able to do in that game, but also said the team still had some things to work on. The Raiders host the Cards next week.
Highlights from the past 3 games against the Chargers, Chiefs and Rams.
Nice to see Mack making some noise- we do have a universal game summaries thread now though
