What's the difference between buying it from a store or getting it for free off the internet?

Were the other AOE games not 'online'? I've dabbled with it and may have to check this out.

This made me jones for my RTS game growing up, Stronghold.

Stronghold 3 comes out Sept 1 - you getting it?

Stronghold 2 was better than 1 and Crusader btw.

Also - AOE:Online just looks too cartoony and childish. I've always been a HUGE RTS fan and big AOE guy (still play AOE3 from time to time) but this just looks like crap.

I may try it, but only if I have other people to play with. 1v1 doesn't interest me but 2v2 matches would be cool.

Pfft, the RTS's that are really worth their weight in stone:

    StarCraft: Brood Wars
    StarCraft 2
    Command and Conquer: Red Alert

    Then even going back some...

    WarCraft 2
and yes, I agree with Age of Empires

    Eh, makes sense.

Most games going the free route do this. Makes it available on all kinds of computers and gives it a distinctive look.

I think it's the mmo elements they were talking about.

    I loved WC2.

i'll check it out and see how it is. from what I read during their betas the game is almost a cross between the old AoE and almost an MMO type game (you do quests to get experience to level up your technology, to get better shit to do it all again).

I think I might, even though I haven't pc gamed in awhile.

I actually grew up playing Crusader. I bought Stronghold 2 and loved it but it was pretty damn glitchy and they hadn't fixed it yet so I gave up on it.

I've never played against anyone, I just dug building castles and economies.

We always just team battled against the CPU - tons of fun.

For anyone who wasn't in the beta of AoE Online, I'll tell you my thoughts.

Nothing like AoE games. It's basically a better version of most Facebook games.

Meaning, it's 100% trash. I'm not dling the real version and it's free.

But to me, it looks like what they did with Civilization:Revolution. Cartoon it up a bit, shorten the learning curve and take away the complexity, and hope little kids can play it too, because we REALLY need a Civilization on the consoles.

Except that cost $60, and AoE is free.

I think that Ryno appreciates that they dumbed the game down to his level.

*I haven't played the game, but I like small font.

once you get to level 60, it's as diverse a game in PvP mode as any Age game ever made.. but whatever...

Level 60 is going to take a long effing time to get to. I am pretty sure I won't get there.
