Alabama wins Thriller over Georgia Tech in Sugar Bowl

Alabama 41 vs. Georgia Tech 37
    Sugar Bowl----

You have to look hard at the box score to determine the winner in this one. Georgia Tech won just about every statistical category you could think of. The one they didn’t win was turnovers and it proved costly.

Tech opened the game with the ball and drove the field and settled for a FG. This would be a recurring theme for G.T. (they had 3 in the game). The Yellow Jackets made 6 trips to the red zone and settled for 2 FG’s and 2 TD’s well below their season average in the red zone. Alabama on the other hand was a perfect 3 for 3 in the red zone with 3 TD’s.

Alabama answered on their first drive and put together a grueling 15 play drive for a TD. In the second quarter the Tide would capitalize on good field position and score again to take a 14-3 lead. Alabama increased their lead when G.T. tech QB Luallen was hurried into passing into the end zone and picked off by CB B.J. Scott, Scott took the interception back 102 yards for a TD. 21-3. Tech wouldn’t take long to answer scoring a TD of their own with 0:32 seconds left in the 1st half. Instead of taking a 21-10 lead into halftime and getting the ball back in the second half the Crimson Tide tried to move the ball in the final moments of the half. QB Jackson got out of the pocket fumbled the ball and it was scooped up by Georgia Tech and the lead was down to 4 in a blink of an eye.

In the third quarter Georgia Tech’s defense settled in shutting down everything Alabama tried to do. On offense they got going and posted 13 straight points. 2 FG’s and a TD. They had a two score lead 30-21. Alabama had made up their mind to after stalling on three straight drives to head back to the ground. The offense never got a shot to take the field though. Back up half back Shuler returned the kickoff, as the 3rd quarter expired, 104 yards for a TD. The lead was cut to 2 (30-28).

On Georgia Tech next drive B.J. Scott was at again picking off a Luallen pass and returning it for his second TD of the game and putting Bama back on top 34-30 after the 2pt conversion failed. Moving the ball was not a problem for Yellow Jackets, they put a drive together immediately and had the lead 37-34 with 5:43 left in the game.

On Alabama’s final drive they knew if they scored if any time was left on the clock there was a chance they could lose. The Tide drove the field with runs and short passes. Inside the Georgia Tech 10 yard line it was 3rd down and short. The play called sent one of the TE’s to the flat and one on a short curl with the opposite receiver running a slant. From the line it looked like the slant would be open but the G.T. DE dropped back in zone covering the slant route, the TE was covered also, and All-American Dunn was hovering in the middle. Jackson was forced to spin around to the far side of the field and head toward the sideline and dash towards the first. Dunn read the scramble and met Jackson at the 1st down line but was too late. Alabama scored on the next play leaving 1:03 seconds on the clock.

The stage was set for a thrilling finish to the Sugar Bowl. Luallen lead his team down the field as cool as ever hitting the middle when it was there and throwing outside to stop the clock. Inside the 15 yard line Luallen hit his receiver motoring towards the goal line but he was stopped at the 1. He called hurry up and everybody raced to the line 8.7.6.5.4.3.2 the ball was snapped in time. Luallen dropped back and did not take long to survey the field (Bama thought he might try and run it in and was trying to spy with an OLB) and fired to his right but the pass was tipped by the CB up into the air. The GT WR showed great concentration and went immediately for the ball. It looked like he came down with the ball just inside the goal line but his momentum carried him forward and was tackled at the 4. The ref’s felt he was juggling the ball so they did not rule it a TD. Game over!!

    GG MO!!

Nice win Josh, I saw that last play and it looked like a TD live, after review it was the right call. The WR didnt have the ball in the endzone he caught it outside.

You look at the stats and wonder how the heck Bama won this game! Crazy.

Kick of Return and 2 pick 6's. Alabama loves to play in those ugly games.....That last play was a heart stopper.

Mo is real hard to stop, real hard. You just have to hope that when he makes the 4 or 5 bad plays a game you can get a couple to go your way.

Bama's defense is superhuman. Speed everywhere...we were lucky to overcome the disadvantage there somewhat but again, luallen's turnovers were prevalent. That's what happens when you get a bit pass happy like I tend to do and in this game, I did much better giving the rock to orwin smith. Boy did I seemingly under utilized this heisman winner at key moments.
