Badger Bulletin 2014

Wisconsin rediscovers their running game in a 35-25 win over Colorado in Madison. Plagued by combined nine interceptions in their first two contests of the season, Wisconsin found their running game in the tune of over 160 rushing yards in the non-conference win. Ahead 28-19 near the end of the third quarter, the Badgers went on a 16 play drive which ate up over five minutes of clock and kept the Buffaloes at distance. Next up for Wisky is a visit from second ranked Michigan, their fourth straight ranked opponent.

The Wisconsin Badgers recovered from defensive disaster in the first half in which they allowed 28 points. The Badger D buckled down in the second half, giving up a single TD and enabling Wisconsin to get the conference win with a field goal as time expired. The Badgers improved to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten.

Wisconsin used a 2-1 margin in time of possession to aid their effort in defeating rival Minnesota 31-16 to take home the Paul Bunyon Axe for the third consecutive year. The Badgers fell behind early when Gopher running back James Clark scored on a 54-yard jaunt on Minnesota’s first drive but recovered with a 31 of the game’s next 34 points to improve to 4-3 and 3-1 in the Big Ten. Wisky was 8-12 on third down conversions and their control of the clock never allowed the Gophers to gain any offensive momentum. Backup RB Chris Young scored twice while starter Joey Richard had one tally. QB Dan Thomas was efficient, completing 12 of 18 for 161 yards and one touchdown pass. Next up for Wisconsin is sixth ranked and undefeated Notre Dame.

A dominant second half enables Notre Dame to remain undefeated with a 31-28 victory over Wisconsin in Madison. Trailing 14-7 at halftime, the Irish controlled the second half, cranking out over 250 total yards in the last two quarters. The Badgers drop to 4-4 and 2-2 in the Big Ten. Next up for Wisconsin is a visit from Illinois.

    Wisconsin 24, Illinois 3

After a very slow start offensively, Wisconsin found their rhythm late in the second quarter and carried it through the rest of the contest in a 24-3 win over Illinois in Champaign. The Badgers improve to 5-4 and 4-2 in the Big Ten and now head to Happy Valley to face #9 Penn State. Badger running back Joey Richard had his best game of the year, gaining 128 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. New starting quarterback Charles Williams was steady, connecting on 16 of 29 passes for 174 yards and no picks.

Later in the same quarter, Badgers tie the game again on this Williams short TD run

On Penn State’s next drive, Jacobs takes this interception off a deflection back to the PSU three. Wisky scored one play later to pull ahead 35-28.

With seconds left in the third and down a touchdown, Penn State faced with third and nine at its own 34. Seeing no one open backup, QB Brandon Williams takes off and picks up a huge first down with a 15 yard run.

The Badgers get a sack on PSU’s last drive with just 37 seconds left. Coach Tuco then questionably calls a timeout, giving PSU time to get into field goal range and win the game.

After trading scores for the first two and half quarters, the Wisconsin defense buckled down and helped the Hawkeyes knock off rival Iowa 31-21 in Madison. The victory puts Wisky at 6-5 and closes their Big Ten season at 5-3 with a trip to #21 Hawaii still remaining. After a wild first half in which the two teams combined for 35 points, the Badger D put the clamps on Iowa, limiting the Hawkeyes to just seven second half points. Charles Williams threw for over 250 yards despite going down with an injury in the second quarter. Starting RB Joey Richard was knocked out of the game in the first half, hindering the running game, which mustered just 62 total yards.

Joey Richard scored four touchdowns as the Wisconsin Badgers end their season on a winning note by beating Hawaii 42-20. The Badgers finish the season 7-5 and now wait on a bowl invite, likely the Capital One Bowl. Wisconsin move the ball primarily through the air and on the arm of quarterback Charles Williams, who was 13 of 17 for 231 yards and two touchdowns.

    Maryland 38, Wisconsin 24

As with nearly every loss the Wisconsin Badgers endured in 2014, the turnover bug was too much to overcome in a 38-24 loss to Maryland in the Capital One Bowl. The Badgers turned the ball over six times, three on fumbles and three on interceptions to close the 2014 campaign at a disappointing 7-6.

After falling behind 21-3, the Badgers notted the score at 24 before a bizarre play changed the outcome of the game in the fourth quarter.

Tied at 24 in the fourth quater when cornerback John Moore steals an option pitch and is off to the races before ...

Maryland would score on the next drive, due in most part to some back who went for 230 and was the reincarnation of Earl Cambell.

The play was a reminder of how the Miami dynasty symbolically came to end in the 1992 Sugar Bowl and national championship game against Bama. Most of you are probably too young to remember. Bama would end up routing the Canes.
