DT Curtis Finley sacks Courtney Stanley on the game's final play

RALEIGH- Despite being bitten again by the turnover bug that has plagued the Wisconsin program for the last three seasons, the Badgers withstood a furious rally by NC State to eke out a 21-14 win. Only after a Curtis Finley sack of Wolfpack Courtney Stanley on the Wisconsin 39 with eight seconds left did the Badgers secure the road victory to even their season record at 1-1. NC State shares the same record.

After a disastrous first half in which quarterback Charles Williams would toss three picks, the Badgers went to the running game in the second half. Wisconsin built a 21-7 lead after a short John Anderson touchdown run mid-way thru the fourth quarter. NC State quarterback Courtney Stanley, who was 17 of 23 for 177 yards, led a quick scoring drive to pull NC State within seven with under two minutes left. After a failed onside kick attempt, the Wolfpack prevented the Badgers from a first down and Badger kicker Monte Washington trotted out onto the field with a chance to seal the game. Washington was short on the 42 yard attempt, his second miss of the day from that distance, and the door was left open for NC State. Stanley got the Wolfpack as close as the Bagder 39 before time ran out after the Finley sack.

Williams finished 15 of 23 for 185 yards and threw two td passes. The Wiksy defense played very well, with the exception of the last half of the fourth quarter, limiting NC State to just eight rushing yards and recording five sacks.

Joey Richard on his 66-yard run (shitty crowd for a game between two ranked teams)

CINCINNATI- Behind another stellar defensive effort from their defense, Wisconsin beat #20 Cincinnati 23-17 to improve to 2-1. The Bearcats came into the game as the nation’s top ranked offense and averaged 746 yards a game. The Badger defenders allowed the Cincy offense just ten points, 172 total yards and eight first downs. After three games, Wisconsin’s run defense has allowed just 95 total yards on the ground.

Running back Joey Richard carried most of the load offensively, gaining 130 yards on 21 carries. He also tallied two touchdowns, one of which was his career-long- a 66 scoring jaunt in the third quarter.

Special teams problems persist for the Badgers. Last week it was kicker
Monte Washington missing two crucial kicks. This week it was kick coverage. Cincinnati had 244 kickoff return yards, including a 92 yard return for a score that pulled the Bearcats within six in the fourth quarter.

    Shannon Bennett celebrates a sack

BLOOMINGTON- The Wisconsin Badgers recovered quickly from last week's heartbreaking overtime loss to Michigan with a 34-21 road win over Indiana. The victory improves the 22nd ranked Badgers to 3-2 and 1-0 in the Big Ten. Indiana is 1-4.

The Badgers jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead which held into halftime, due in most part to the efforts of tailback Joey Richard, who gained 136 and scored three touchdowns.

Next up for the Badgers is 4-1 Northwestern.

MADISON- Behind Joey Richard’s 131 rushing yards, Wisconsin laid the wood to Northwestern by a 42-17 count. The Badgers jumped out to an 21-3 halftime lead and quickly put the game out of reach in the third quarter after Teddy Tate took back the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown. MADISON- After surviving a wild first half in which 49 points were scored, the Wisconsin Bagders buckled down in the second half to deliver a 35-28 conference vicotry over Illinois, 35-28. After allowing Illini quarterback Brian Davis to throw three touchdowns in the first half. The Badger defense did not allow the Illinois offense any points in the second half. The lone Illinois score came when Illini corner Mark Bryant scooped up a fumble and returned it 27 yards for a score with just 1:36 remaining. Clinging to a seven point lead, Wisconsin did what worked most of the day- give the ball to Joey Richard. Richard made some crucial runs, as he did all day, to pick up first downs and run out the remaining clock. Richard, who has eclipsed the 100 yard mark in five straight games, had 142 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The win puts Wisky at 5-2 approaching a key three game stretch- #11 Notre Dame, #9 Penn State and #10 Iowa.

    Wisconsin 31, Notre Dame 28

SOUTH BEND- Only after Notre Dame kicker Ronnie Frazier's game-tying 43-yard field goal attempt went wide left did the Wisconsin Badgers get a chance to breathe easy in a 31-28 win over the Domers. Donte Marshall of Wisconsin had just kicked thru three with 20 seconds left before the Irish quickly moved down the field. But an icing timeout and steady crosswind prevented the Irish from victory in this matchup of ranked teams.

Wisconsin, although outgained by nearly 100 yards, used a heavy advantage in time of possession and a 83 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Teddy Tate to eke out the W. It was the second kickoff return for a touchdown by Tate in as many weeks.

The Badger offense struggled, due in most part to just 53 yards on the ground. Joey Richard came into the game with five straight 100 yard games but mustered just 21 on 16 carries against the stout Irish defense. Quarterback Charles Williams picked up the slack, throwing for 219 yards and two scores.

The Badgers have the next week off before Penn State, fresh off their big win over Michigan, comes to Madison.

    Wisconsin 28, Penn State 16

MADISON- Thanks to a staunch defensive effort, Wisconsin recovered from an early 13-0 hole to beat #5 Penn State 28-16. The victory moves the Badgers to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the Big Ten, good for a second place tie in the conference.

The Nittany Lions began the game with some fireworks as Michael Wade took back the opening kickoff 89 yards for the touchdown. After a defensive stop, PSU scored again on a 16 yard Jeff Watkins run. The deficit woke up Wisconsin, who dominated the rest of the contest, outscoring PSU 28-3 the rest of the way.

Penn State was limited to just 166 total yards and mustered just seven first downs. Wisky chewed up the clock most of the second half and were able to crank out first downs to keep the ball away from the vaunted Penn State offense.

Quarterback Charles Williams completed 14 of 23 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown while backup running back Chris Young scored twice, filling in for the injured-again Joey Richard.

    Wisconsin 31, Minnesota 24

MADISON- In dramatic fashion, the Wisconsin Badgers keep hold of Paul Bunyon's Axe with a 31-24 victory over rival Minnesota. With the win, Wisconsin improves to 9-2 and 7-1 in the Big Ten, the best record for the Badgers in the Coach Tuco era. The Golden Gophers kept the game close and seemingly were headed into overtime after a field goal with three seconds left tied the game at 24. But Eric Mitchell came up with a big play on the ensuing kickoff that prevented the extra stanza.
