BADGER'S 17 POINT 3RD QTR DOWNS UTAH

Wisconsin opened its 2010 season with #23 Utah Utes coming to Madison. The perenial "BCS Busters" are not the typical patsy Wiscoonsin is used to in its openers, and it showed. Wisconsin received the ball first and quickly attempted to establish Clay on the ground. He delivers the Badgers a couple 1st downs to get WIsc to their own 46 yd line. Tolzien goes to the air and finds TE Lance Kendricks behind the Utah linebackers. Kendricks races the rest of the way to the endzone carrying Utah defenders along the way.

Up 7-0 its was now the Badger defense's turn to take the field for the first time. Things didnt go quite as well. Utah is able to spread the field and complete short to medium passes all the way down the field. The Badger D finally makes a couple nice plays and forces a Utah FG.

The Utah D really played a nice stretch of football for the remainder of the half allowing only a FG to put Wisconsion up 7 halfway through the second. On the very next play, however, Utah RB Lucky Radley takes a handoff and gets to the outside thanks to some poor Badger tackling. No one can catch him and he ties the game 10-10 with a 68yd TD run. The rest of the half is a stalemate and we go to halftime tied.

Wisconsin stops the Utes quickly and gets the ball back. After a few 1st downs, Wisc settles on a 28yd FG. The Badger D steps up and gets itsoffense back on the field after a couple minutes. After a few more pounding runs by Clay, Tolzien again finds Kendricks for a TD, this time from 24 yds out. After a Utah turnover, Wisconsin really starts to ride Clay, sensing this could be the Utah killer. Clay eventually reaches the endzone on a 3 yd plunge to give Wisconsin a 27-10 lead going into the fourth.

At the start of the fourth, Coach Onaradio34 pulls Clay as he's already logged 27 carries. It wasn't the most popular decision but Coach felt Clay is too vital to the team to risk an injury ahead by 17.

The teams trade possessions with neither having much success. Wisconsin pins Utah inside the 5 with just under 3 minutesto go and all looked lost for Utah. WR Martavious Lee had other ideas as he broke free from the Badger secondary and raced to the endzone for an 86 yd TD reception. Utah elects not to go with an onsides kick and instead kicks it deep. Wisconsin needed to chew some clock or eat up a few Utah timeouts to seal the win. Ball takes a counter and breaks a huge run down to the Utah 4.

3rd string RB Zach Brown would punch in the TD to cement the victory. Utah added a TD late but was unable to recover the onside kick. Wisconsin closes the game out and takes the win 34-24.

Player of the Game: John Clay 27car, 144yds, 1TD

Wisconsin starts of the year 1-0 (0-0).

ANOTHER BIG QUARTER LIFTS WISCONSIN TO WIN

Arizona State came into Badger Stadium with a 2-0 record and plans of an upset. What they got was a steady dose of John Clay and nearly shutout. One meager FG was all the Arizona State offense could muster late in the 3rd qtr.

Wisconsin again used an explosion of points to break open a close game. This time it was the 2nd qtr where the Badgers began to show their dominance. 17 unanswered points in the qtr gave Wisconsin a 17-0 halftime lead and the luxury of resting their horse Clay. For the day, Clay ended with 31 car, 161 yds, 1TD. The Arizona State secondary was forced to make tackle after tackle as Clay continuously popped runs to the second level. Its a credit to the secondaries' tackling that his longest run was of 18 yards.

Wisconsin did show some flashes of an air attack, also. WR I. Anderson caught 2 bombs, 1 for a 42yd TD (highlight), while N. Toon snagged 3 catches for 70 total yards.

Glancing at a a couple stats tells the rest of the story. ASU Total Offense: 168, ASU Time of Possession: 9:28.

Wisconsin moves to 2-0 on the year and must now travel to Stanford next week for a big non-con showdown.

    BADGER D COMES UP BIG

The Wisconsin Badgers used a proven formula Saturday, run the ball and play good defense. The Badger D held Stanford to 281 total yards and 3 points. Cardinal Sophmore sensation Andrew Luck was knocked out of part of the game and finished with 173 yds on 13-26 passing. His backup faired alittle better at 6-9 for 105 but threw a costly INT in the red zone. Both were sacked 4 times.

The Wisconsin passing game didnt do much better than its counterpart, much to the chagrin of their coach. Fortunatley they have John Clay. The All-American turned in his best performance to date with a 211 yard 2TD performance on 20 carries. It was Clay that busted a 3-0 game wide open in the 2nd half. A TD run of 60 yards in the 3rd and one of 49 yards in the 4th gave Wisconsin a 17-0 lead.

Wisconsin moves to 3-0 on the year moving into Big 10 play next week vs 4-0 Michigan State.

    3 STRAIGHT 3'S

For the 3rd straight week, a Wisconsin opponent fails to reach the endzone. This time it was Michigan State who could only manage a FG in a 35-3 blowout. The Wisconsin D dominated all but a couple drives and was able to come up with 3 turnovers. Wisconsin outgained Mich St 366-158 and held on to the ball 18:13 compared to 9:47 for the Spartans.

The dormant Wisconsin passing game was very efficient as Badger QB's combined to go 12-17 for 191 yards, 1TD, 0INT's (Tolzien was knocked out of the game and will miss Week 6). That lone TD came on a 21 yard pass to Nick Toon as backup QB Phillips stared down a all-out blitz and threw a strike.

Mich St did an admirable job of slowing down John Clay (25 car, 97 yards), but the JR HB did manage a pair of 5 yard TD runs.

Wisconsin improves to 4-0 (1-0) on the year and must now face rival Minnesota in Madison. Key game for the Badgers in both Big 10 play and on the recruiting trail as a number of Badger prospects will be on campus.

    BADGERS STORM BACK, REMAIN UNBEATEN

Wisconsin hosted the #8 Ohio State Buckeyes in Madison, Wisc. Ohio State dominated the early part of the game through half on the 2nd qtr opening up a 17-0 lead. The Wisconsin D that had been so good all season was getting torched, while the offense continuously gave OSU good field position. It sure didn't help that sensational RB John Clay went down on Wisconsin's second play from scrimmage and never returned (He'll be back next week). Sophmore RB M. Ball stepped up and had a very respectable game against a stout D. For the game Ball totaled 80 yards on 22 carries with a TD. IT was his 11 yd TD scamper that gave Wisconsin its first points and turned the tide of the game.

Wisconsin would get the ball back right before the half and manage to get into field goal range. P. Welch would drive home the 44yd FG as time expired to get the Badgers within a TD at 17-10 going into the lockeroom.

Late in the 3rd, Ohio State had a 1st and goal inside the Badger 5 yard line. After 2 stops, RB B. Saine coughed up the ball and Wisconnsin recovers. Sensing their opportunity, the Badgers drive down the field. At the Buckeye 34, Wisconsin caught a hellacious break. WR Nick Toon catches a tipped pass that caromed behind the defense and races for the TD. 17-17.

After another big stop, the Wisconsin offense comes back on the field with a chance to take the lead. It's Toon again who comes up big. Toone finds a soft spot in a Buckeye zone and sits on a curl route. Tolzien finds him for 15 yd TD.

Ohio State isn't done yet as Pryor leads them back downfield and into the red zone. With under 30 seconds left, Pryor throws a lame duck into the endzone that SS J. Valai picks off to seal the win. Valai was covering a TE and was beat bad but Pryor stares down another reciever and Valai is so out of position against his man, he breaks on the pass and makes the pick.

Wisconsin escapes with a 24-17 win and moves to 6-0 (3-0) on the year.
