Cornerback Wes Baker just continues to display the heroics when we need it most and it got us a much-needed come-from-behind win against the Stanford Cardinal, 35-27. The Cardinal put their stamp on the first half by taking a 10-0 lead in the first quarter on the strength of a field goal and a 78-yard interception return by D. Turner. "We came out with the yips in this one," said Coach Hellisan. "We were like Mackey Sasser just yanking a ball past the pitcher or something. We couldn't get out of our own way and it was embarrassing. They blocked well and made the right plays especially on defense, but we felt we had something to do with that. That's why we believed we had a chance at a comeback even down big early." Stanford added to the early misery with a 57-yard run where it just seemed like each UW defender, to a man, squatted and took a shit while watching him fly by. The blocking was perfect for a 10-15 yard run, but then the safety just took a dump on the field which was ugly, and Sledge was off to the races. Down 17-0, what Washington needed was a drive - any kind of points would give us hope. THat drive ended in a 1-yard touchdown run by Stephen Wilson which made it 17-7 Wilson, our only hope for a running game on paper, of course went down for the rest of our important Pac-10 games in this one. I love NCAA 2011! We haven't had a single season where I haven't lost the one guy I couldn't afford to lose. Stanford re-asserted their first half dominance as they threw a quick out route and cornerback Wes Baker got caught going for a ball he shouldn't have tried to go for. THe result was Baker got nothing and C. Robinson took off down the sideline for a 61-yard score making it 24-7. Looking to get a field goal with very little time left in the first half, Greg Baker dropped back and found George Allen in the flat against an all-out blitz. Allen shook the safety badly and then rumbled the rest of the way, just barely pulling three defenders into the end zone with 35 seconds to go in the half. It was 24-14. This play seemed to flip a switch for the Huskies. The blitzing and constant pressure which gave us so many problems against Stanford in the past melted away with Allen's awesome play. From that point on the Stanford D was seemingly at our mercy, and they scored only three points in the second half. stanford looked to get some momentum back with a nice couple of plays that set up a 54-yard field goal. I have to give BBJ credit for knowing his team, I would have had no idea if my guy could hit that long of a FG... It just crept over the crossbar for a 27-14 lead. We knew we had a lot of time left in the game so we embarked upon a 3+ minute drive that resulted in a 2-yard touchdown run by Brian Wright, the JUCO SOPH who is suddenly our starting running back (yuck). That made it 27-21. The Stanford offense still had something in the tank and they were making us work for each tackle, each inch of grass was a war zone. But when it came right down to it, Wes Baker, who had been picked on all day, jumped in front of a pass and intercepted it which gave us a huge boost. With about 5:00 to go in the 4th QTR and down by 6 points I wanted to score quickly, thinking we would probably need another possession to steal a win. I planned on passing just about every play but true freshman E.J. Webster was all alone against another heavy blitz. After he caught the ball, he made a quick move to avoid one guy, broke an arm tackle, and rumbled 81 yards for a 28-27 Husky lead. Back Stanford came, and back Wes Baker came to stick a knife in their chances. Baker stabbed another pass making it his 19th and 20th interceptions of his career, and 7 this season. At this point the team was riding high. Stanford was trying to confuse us with some defensive adjustments and we got perfect blocks as seldom-used Anthony Daniel went untouched up the interior of the left side and ran way for a 35-27 lead. Baker again stepped in front of a pass on Stanford's last-gasp attempt to come back when down 8 points but the ball glanced harmlessly off his hands. The Cardinal made inroads to a good chance, but threw a floater into the end zone that safety Kenton Smith skied to catch at the apex and end the game. GG BBJ. OH! If you would like to discuss that game the thread for that is right HERE On a serious note, Baker taxed you that game for a pick. If we had more guys playing like Baker on D that day and didn't play like pussies on offense we would have beat you.
