2015 Season Review
The 49ers finished better than expected in their first season under HC Jim Tomsula, going 7-9, and rumors are that they will keep the coach headed in to the next season. Finishing 2nd in their division and splitting with every division opponent was solid but the 49ers went 0-4 against the AFC North.
Finishing 29th in the league in passing yards, and tied for 32nd in passing TD's is not where the 49ers want to be. Owners are not sure whether the blame lies with QB Colin Kaepernick or the offense the team was running. The bright spot on the season was the emergence of 2nd year HB Carlos Hyde, who ran for 1,216 yards and 7 TD's in his first season seeing full time duty. WR Anquan Boldin, TE Vernon Davis and LG Alex Boone all have expiring contracts this season. While owners have been said to have been in contact with Boone, they are being tight lipped about other negotiations.
The pass defense was atrocious all season, finishing as the 4th worst defense in the NFL through the air. The rush defense was middle of the pack but nothing that struck fear in opponents. This defense has potential with studs like Lynch (8.5 Sacks), Bowman (126 Tackles), and Lemonier (5.5 Sacks) but they most improve their secondary immediately. NT's Ian Williams and Phil Taylor will both be potential FA's this offseason.
This will be a key off-season for San Francisco as they have many holes to fill to get to where they want to be moving forward.
2016 OffseasonThe Niners made some major moves this offseason. Lets take a look at what positions will be undergoing changes this season.
Kaepernick is gone, being sent to Jacksonville for a 3rd and 4th round pick. In comes west coast golden boy Brett Hundley. He spent a year in the frozen tundra but SF believes in him enough to have sent the Packers a 2nd round pick to get him in a Niners jersey
Lots of changes this season at WR. Anquan Boldin couldn't comes to terms with the team and now plays his football in San Diego. After only one season in the Bay, Torrey Smith was sent to New Orleans in exchange for WR Marques Colston and a 2nd round pick. Veteran James Jones was added in FA but so far has shown little sign of being able to contribute anywhere but Green Bay.
Longtime 49er Vernon Davis was allowed to walk in FA. San Francisco added a capable player in the draft in SS development Kris Brewster.
Much of the OL returns intact but the 49ers did look to shore up the right side of the line. G Ryan Wendell was added in FA and RT Ferrell Duncan was the teams first draft pick, at 12 overall. Both players are expected to start.
All players return from last year but DE Mike Neal was added in FA to shore up the rotation.
DeMarcus Ware was brought in to be a situational player alongside Lynch and Lemonier.
Rookie Derwin Griffin has look phenomenal during camp and is said to be the favorite to start next to Bowman.
The team acquired veteran Tim Jennings in FA and then added former Seminole Kian Scott late in the 1st round to shore up the corner crew.
