Week 1 Summaries

Illinois vs Missouri

Missouri was able to pull away from rival Illinois in a knock down, dragout brawl. The two teams meet in th annual State Farm Showdown. The win give Missouri a 14-7 advantage in the series.

Due to Missouri offensive style and Coach Forever's more balanced attack, The Old Ball Coach had to "air it out" more than he is used to. "I like throwing the ball all over the field, but I also like to run it just as many times. Thats just the way I am. I believe that if you can establish a running game against your opponent, you have an advantage and can basicaly dictate the outcome of the game. There are other deciding factors as well, but the key is having a sound ground game."

Because Missouri was built as a spread team, Gabbert had to sling the ball early and often. He threw a total of 46 times, but completed only 24 of those attempts. He had 289 yds with 1 td and 1 int. The real standout; however, was SOPH WR Jerrell Jackson. Jackson caught 12 of those 24 com. for 195 yds and 1 td. He was the only one that could hold on to the ball.

Illinois battled tough in the first half, but Missouri proved to be to tough for the Fightin Illini. The win improves Missouri to 1-0(0-0) on the season. Next week, Missou travels to Cincinatti to take on the Bearcats.

Final Score:

Missou- 45

Illinois- 21

Player of The Game

Jerrell Jackson was named The Player of The Game against Illinois. He had 12 rec. for 195 yds and a td.

Pitt (31) @ #16 UNC (45)

Tar Heels game plan was simple, run the ball and protect the QB. UNC running back by committee approach was the key as S. Draughn, A. Elzy, and R. Houston combined for 33 carries 209 yards 5 TD's. T. Yates wasn't bad either completing 10-11 229 yards 1 TD.

Tar Heel defense had trouble stopping the pass all game. B. Stull completed 16-23 292 yards 3 TD, however he threw 2 timely INT's, one of which was in the redzone. Once Pitt RB D. Lewis left the game with an injury, the running game was non existent.

Va Tech @ Alabala

First play from scrimmage Soph RB M. Ingram breaks 2 tackles and hits the sideline for a long 49 yard run. The coach of Va Tech started to get alittle concerned. In response the Tech defense focused their attention on Ingram and this clip shows the result.

Soph MLB J.Johnson lays the wood on Ingram jarring the ball loose and recovered by SR FS K.Chancellor 56 yards for the TD. The defense of Va Tech would stop Alabama on their next two drives. The offense ran smoothly on the legs of FR RB R. Williams. He was the work horse driving the ball down the field and punching it in the endzone from 2 yards out. The next offense drive it was JR QB T.Taylor hitting SR TE S.Wheeler for the TD from 10 yards out.
21-0 Va Tech

2nd Qtr
Bama musters up a efficient drive and gets a long 56 yard FG. Va Tech answers back with another long time consuming drive and Williams again from 2 yards out runs it in for the TD. The next offensive play for Bama was a big one, a 73 yard pass for the score.

28-10 Va Tech

3rd Qtr
The tech defense dominates and forces another turnover causing Ingram to fumble again. Then the legs of RB Williams gets the 6 yard TD run. A FG was made by Tech to end the 3rd.

38-10 Va Tech

4th Qtr
Bama fires back with 2 long 20 yard+ passes and Ingram who scores from 2 yards out. Va Tech answers back with a 26 yard pass for the TD with 4:45 to go. Game expires as Va Tech forces a turnover on downs and runs out the remaining 3:40.

T.O.P. Va Tech 18:46 Bama 6:28
Alabama- Soph WR Julio Jones 0 catches
Va Tech Fr RB Ryan Williams 19 carries 117 yards 3 TDs

Final 45-17 Va Tech

Western Michigan @ Michigan

Coach Maximus knew heading into the season opening matchup vs. Western Michigan, that it was likely to be a victory. He planned to focus on the running game, so as not to embarrass the opponent. What he didn't count on was Freshman QB Tate Forcier sustaining a concussion, knocking him out for the game, and at least one extra week. His return for the Week 3 matchup vs. Missouri is questionable at this time.

Michigan's offense started slow, with just a single TD run by Senior HB Brandon Minor accounting for the score after the first quarter. This was followed by a 41 yard FG in the second. However, the Michigan defense had been stifling WMU. This came to a crashing halt on a 33 yard TD run by backup running back Aaron Winchester.

This turn of events led to Coach Maximus' younger brother making fun of him for only being up by a FG against a lower tier opponent. This disrespect lit a fire under the coach. He told the Michigan players about the comment and they were enraged. Sadly, Western Michigan paid the price.

By the time the bloodshed ended, Michigan won 38-7.

HB Brandon Minor earned Player of the Game honors, with 159 yards and 3 TDs on 18 carries. QB Tate Forcier finished 11 of 14 for 161 yards and 1 TD. He also added a 6 yard rushing scamper. Primary WR Greg Mathews, a senior, had 4 catches for 71 yards and the highlight of the game, a 16 yard TD over the middle of the field. A lesser receiver would have dropped the ball following the vicious hit, but Mathews is more reliable than that.

[FLASH]http://www.youtube.com/v/1PD3AJwAgzM[/FLASH]

The reception followed the commentary by the coaches brother, and ended any hope of an upset.

Following Forcier's injury, freshman Denard Robinson took the reins. His job was basically to hand the ball off. He completed his only two passes. He will have to play a much bigger role in next week's matchup with rival Notre Dame.

The Evan Royster Show; #8 Penn State defeats Akron, 44-34

University Park, PA- Though his quarterback may be on the early Heisman ballots, Evan Royster made a strong case of his own in the first game of the 2009 college football season.

In Coach Jam's first game in taking over for legendary head coach Joe Paterno, the Penn State Nittany Lions had a strong showing against Akron. Penn State ran a balanced offensive attack for much of the game, but once Senior quarterback Daryll Clark had his mistakes and issues (2 interceptions), Coach Jam shifted his offensive philosophy to a ground and pound attack, with the passing game relying heavily on play action. Evan Royster had a career game for the Nittany Lions, using 27 rushing attempts to gain 226 yards and an astonishing 5 touchdowns on the ground. He also used 2 catches to gain 71 yards receiving. Though Clark had his mistakes, he also had a respectable showing, going 12-18 for 237 yards and 1 touchdown, but throwing 2 interceptions. He also had 7 rushing attempts for 50 yards.

Though the defense gave up 34 points and 444 yards of total offense, those stats are inflated by a couple of plays made by the opportunistic Akron offense. After the 4th quarter where 3 plays had results in 14 points for Akron, the defense stepped up its game, and limited mistakes. Coach Jam is considering a switch to the 3-3-5 instead of the traditional 4-3 look being ran at Penn State at the moment. After a dramatic goal line stand at the end of the third quarter, the Akron offense was never able to find a rhythm, and Penn State dominated the forth quarter.

Up next, #8 Penn State travels to play Syracuse.

Ohio State vs Navy

The game started out much closer than the so called experts expected. The Ohio State offense started out extremely slow as Terelle Pryor struggled early with his accuracy. Navy jumped out to a 6 nothing lead on two J. Buckley field goals as they moved the ball at will but the silver bullet defense stiffened in the red zone and Navy could not punch it in for 6. And this proved to be costly.

Late in the second quarter, T.Pryor finally found his mark hitting a wide open Jake Ballard over the middle for a 46 yard TD pass, giving tOSU the lead. T.Pryor than followed that up with a 5 yard TD pass to Dane Sazenbacher, to give tOSU a 14 to 6 lead heading into halftime.

The Buckeyes came out in the second half and decided to do what they do best and run the football and wait for the other team to make a mistake. The three headed monster of B. Saine, D. (boom) Heron and T. Pryor ended up with 171 yards on 36 carries with Saine leading the way 126 yards and a TD. Navy continued to battle but tOSU broke their backs on an 86 yard D. Torrence interception return, Navy added a late TD to make the score look closer than it was. After the game the Columbus Dispatch reporters continued to ask coach Buckeye about his conservtive play calling. Coach Buckeye ruffled some feathers when he said "shut the f*** up morrons I know what i am doing", and God Bless you.

Next up for the Buckeyes are the great USC Trojans who wont let The Ohio State University get away with not passing. So Buckeye fans let hope pryor dosent play like an idiot next week.

#23 WVU holds on to upset #1 Florida at home 17-10

In a defense first game, WVU scores its first win over a #1 ranked team ever. WVU's offense came into the season highly regarded, but it was its defense that stole the show. The teams were never separated by more than 4 points until the 4th Q, and WVU needed a huge red zone stop to secure the victory.

The 1st Q was back and forth, but scoreless until Heisman winner Tim Tebow broke off a thrilling 47 yard TD run to put Florida up 7-0.

The 2nd Q was much of the same, but WVU used its special teams and defense to even the score. All-Conference punter Scott Kozlowski pinned Florida inside its own 5 w/ a 56 yard punt. WVU's defense held on 1st and 2nd and SS Sidney Glover intercepted Tebow in 3rd down and returned in 5 yards for the tying TD.

WVU drove down the field near the end of the 2nd Quarter and went up 14-7 on a play action pass from Brown to TE Tyler Urban. In return Florida drove down to the 6 w/ less than 2 mins remaining, but was held to a FG to close the gap to 14-10 at the half.

The 3rd Q provided more defense w/ neither team scoring a point while both teams kept their cards close to the vest. The 4th Q was more of the same w/ the only points being a huge 50 yard FG by Kozlowski after a 5:44 second drive. Score = 17-10.

Florida once again drove down the field as time was expiring to make it exciting. After a 4:30 second drive LB JT Thomas intercepted Tebow inside the 5 and returned it 45 yards to seal the victory.

Final Score = 17-10

Thank you! Btw...I've played a lot of user games, not on Tradition but elsewhere. I haven't seen anyone else run as well w/ the QB as you. I was scared straight after that long Tebow run. I don't believe I've allowed a QB run that long before. Great game...nail biting to the next to last play. If I didn't get those two end of half goalline stops the story would be different.

I'm looking forward to seeing how high I jump after that win. I'm hoping for #15 or so.

Too Close for Comfort; #7 Penn State Defeats Syracuse, 28-25

University Park, PA- A win is a win. That's what Coach Jam said in his post game press conference after a close win against an inferior Syracuse team. However, though a win may be a win, the defense still has issues after giving up 34 to Akron last week. For this game the defensive philosophy switched to a 3-3-5, and the linebackers were able to create more pressure, but Syracuse QB Greg Paulus was still able to complete 27 out of 36 pass attempts for 348 yards and a touchdown. As conference play opens up in a few weeks, the defense must step up and fill the gaps that lesser offenses like Syracuse and Akron are able to find. However, the run defense was good, as Syracuse RB Carter only gained 28 yards on 8 attempts. However, keep in mind that Syracuse missed a field goal in this game, so this could have easily gone to overtime.

On the bright side, the offense played well. Darryl Clark had a great game, going 15 for 20 for 225 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also had 0 interceptions. RB Evan Royster used 26 rushing attempts for 120 yards and a touchdown. Leading WR Zug had 6 receptions for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns. Also, two drives were stalled and forced to punt because of two crucial 3rd down drops by TE A. Quarless.

Up next #7 Penn State hosts Temple before conference play opens up against #21 Iowa.

The Gators and their Heisman candidate get the rebound win that they needed against Troy. The Defense was solid and the offense moved the ball, although not with ease. Next week the hated Vols will come to town. This could be the de facto SEC East title game.

Next: vs. Tennessee (SalutationsNJ)

Tim Tebow: 21/26, 256 yds, 2 TD; 13 car, 37 yds, 2TD
Aaron Hernandez: 8 rec, 89 yards
Jeff Demps: 14 car, 71 yds

Ryan Stamper & Brandon Spikes: 6 tack each

#19 WVU pulls away late to beat ECU 41-20

The Mountaineers upset over their minuscule bump in the rankings from #23 to #19 after upsetting the #1 Gators last week, overlooked a pesky ECU team. ECU came back to w/in 8 points in the 4th before a late Jarrett Brown 20 yard TD run sealed the victory. On the last play of the game future All-America FS Robert Sands intercepted ECU's last ditch effort and returned it 85 yards to cap off the 21 point victory.

Noel Deveine once again had a workmanlike, but unsensational day w/ 62 yards and 1 TD, while Jarrett Brown picked up the slack w/ 92 yards on the ground. Jarrett Brown has been the unsuspected MVP of the team early in the season after combining for 299 yards and 4 TDs.

The WVU defense did what it needed to, but can and will do better. They still haven't allowed a 100 yard rusher, but it allowed mediocre ECU QB Pinkney to complete 71% of his passes.

WVU travels into hostile SEC country next week to face Auburn, which should open up some eyes if they can escape Alabama w/ a win.

Vols Overpower Bruins

38-20

Knoxville, Tn- UCLA was supposed to win this game easily according to the experts. I guess the Vols didn't get the message.

An impressive opening drive helped the Bruins jumped to 3-0 lead. The Vols responded with a drive of their own. An eleven play 73 yard drive was capped off with a 16 yard TD pass from Jonathan Crompton to Gerald Jones.

"It was zone coverage, and Gerald (Jones) ran a great route." Crompton said after the game.

Jonathan Crompton was very impressive himself. The senior quarterback finished the day 18/27 for 230 yards. He had 4 total touchdowns (3 passing, 1rushing). His only miscues of the game were two interceptions, which were caused by blind side hits.

"We have to clean that up." Coach Hasty said, responding to those two moments.

Not to be overlooked, the Tennessee running attack made passing the ball look easy. Montario Hardesty ran for 138 yards on 22 touches. The senior halfback also had 3 receptions for 61 yards, including a 43 yard touchdown grab to open up the second half.

Crompton's second interception of the game breathed life into the Bruins. Derrick Coleman capped a 4 play 23 yard drive with 1 yard touchdown run, slimming the gap to 28-20. On the onsuing kickoff, the game was decided. Freshman kick returner David Oku took the kickoff 103 yards to put the game out of reach.

"Now I know how Moses felt when the Red Sea parted." Oku said with a smirk on his face.

In his first game Coach Hasty made all the right calls. We'll see how long he can continue to impress Vol nation once conference play starts. But for now Vol fans, it's a Rocky Top Day.
