Iowa Starts 2017 With Road Win. Chapel Hills, NC- The Iowa Hawkeyes traveled 956 miles to face the North Carolina Tar Heels. When opening warm ups went under away the skies decided it would play an effect on today's game. Iowa would win the coin toss and would decide to kick off to open the game. UNC would start there drive and pick up some yards till Sean Tyson would pick up his first pick of the game. Iowa would drive down to the 18 yard line and the drive would stall. Micheal Roberson would come in for the 1st time this season after a miserable junior year. But he would put that behind him and nail a 28 yard field goal. The Tar Heels would get the ball back and forced to punt. Iowa would get the ball back and drive down to the 1 yard line. Alex Hill would call his own number and plunge into the end zone to take a 10-0 lead. The second quarter would be slow on the score board. Iowa would score on a 47 yard pass from Hill to Leon Kent. Iowa would go into the half with a 17-0 lead. At the start of the second half Iowa would get the ball. The leading passer and receiver from last season hooked up with the first points in the 3rd quarter. Hill would connect with Aaron Sanders for a wide open 59 yard touchdown. UNC final pulled a drive together to get on the board with a 38 yard field goal from Wilson. Darrell Robinson would score on the ground from 1 yard out. Coach VanWesten was impressed on both sides the ball with this win. "I am proud of this team today," VanWesten commented,"We really came out and showed that we can play ball. Iowa Signs QB Iowa signs first player this season. Gerald Smith verbally commits to Iowa. The #43 quarterback was interested in Missouri and Northern Illinois. Only rated 43rd in the nation at quarterback, Smith will be behind impressive quarterback Matt Slater.
CyHawk Trophy Stays in Iowa City Iowa City, Iowa- The Iowa State Cyclones visited Iowa City this weekend for the annual rivalry game. Iowa has won the past 2 games. Iowa would get on the score board first with an Alex Hill would connect on with Aaron Sanders for 77 yard score. Cyclones would answer back and get a 35 yard field goal. Iowa would finish off the half with another score. Leon Kent would catch a 51 yard pass from Hill. At the start of the 2nd half Iowa State would strike first with a 70 yard touchdown pass. But Iowa would answer back with another Leon Kent touchdown for 3 yards with the help from Alex Hill. But Kent and Hill wouldnt be done there. They connected one last time with a 14 yard passing touchdown. Micheal Roberson would also do some scoring of his own, with a 36 yard field goal. Iowa State would score with the seconds remaining. Coach VanWesten was pleased with his teams play,"Yes I'm proud of these kids again this week. Iowa State was tough and we seen that in the first half. Iowa Upsets! Iowa City, IA- Southern Miss Golden Eagles #15 in the nation travel to Iowa to face the 22nd ranked Hawkeyes. The pink locker must have played a difference today. Iowa would get on the board first with a Alex Hill 2 yard rush. Southern Miss would drive back down and score on a 31 yard pass. The Hawks would answer back right away with another Hill touchdown. This time he would connect with Freddie Black for 25 yards. Iowa would be the only team to score in the 2nd quarter. J.J. Johnson and Aaron Sanders would get catches from Hill for 34 and 4 yards. Going into the 2nd half Iowa would get the ball and drive down again to score from 8 yards out. Hill to Sanders would get together again to score. S Miss would final muster a score to break the 28 point run by the Hawkeyes. But that wouldn't stop the Hawks score again. Surprise surprise Hill would connect with Sanders again, this time for 75 yards. After that score Head Coach VanWesten would pull the starters from the game. Matt Slater would come in as quarterback and would score his first touchdown as a Hawkeye. SMU would score again on a 8 yard run. Iowa Bounces Back After Lose Champlain, Illinois- The Iowa Hawkeyes come off a disapointing lose last week. This week Iowa traveled to Champlain to face the Fighting Illini. Iowa's offense would struggle right outta the gate. Illinois could score after a Alex Hill fumble. But John Everett would take the ensuing kick off back to score on a 96 yard kick off return. Illinois would score one more before the end of the first quarter. The next score would be an Illinois 4 yard run. Hill and Mark Thompson would connect for a 14 yard passing touchdown. Iowa would hold the Fighting Illini to a field goal the next drive. Leon Kent and Hill would connect towards the late seconds of the 2nd quarter for a 47 yard touchdown. At the start of the 2nd half Illinois would fumble on the kick off and Iowa would recover. A few plays later Darrell Robinson would score on a 4 yard run of his own. Then Micheal Roberson would score on a 52 yard field goal. Illinois would final muster a score. Then Illinois would score a 28 yard passing touchdown. Tony Leonard and Matt Slater (in for injured Hill, left game with bruised throwing shoulder) for 49 yards. Iowa would force Illinois in a 4th down situation and forced them to turn over on downs.
