SAINTS HELP KEEP LIONS STREAK GOING - OPEN SEASON WITH WIN.
    NewOrleans-LA
    Savage Mason Reporting

New Orleans Saints opened up the Season against a very much improved Lions team who looked to come into the SuperDome and shock the OMFL with a huge win to open up their season and break their losing streak of 20+ games.

Saints were fielding a new look defense which fielding a lot of new speed and play makers. FS Sharper (Vikings), SS Jones (Eagles), CB Greer (Bills), CB Jenkins (Ohio St), LB Casillas (Nebraska), LB Guyton (Pats), LB B. Bailey (Free Agent) and many more players even on offense. Players like J. Miller (Jets), B. Westbrook (Eagles), Ingram (Eagles), and H. Evans (Pats).

Saints have also swapped over to a new defensive scheme to a 3/4 instead of their normal 4/3. Saints plan this season is to attack, attack, and attack some more. On offense, on defense, and even on special teams look for the Saints to throw the kitchen sink at each and ever team that they face.

Lions come to town with a new qb, a new coach, and several new players on defense. Which team would jell the fastest and which team would need another few weeks to come together as a team.

Saints would put up the first points of the game after a very nice drive where Westbrook was breaking some nice runs and Brees was just being Brees. Westbrook ends up punching it in on a sweep from 8 yards out - 7-0 Saints.

Both teams would stop each other before the Lions would get a drive started. Saints gambled on a 3rd down and tried to bring heat. Standford hits Johnson for a 1st down, but Johnson would not be denied and broke a 48 yard td pass and catch to tie the game at 7-7.

Lions would take their first lead of the season off another great drive which ended up in a 41 yard fg by Hanson for a 10-7 lead for the Lions.

Saints knew they needed to come back and get something going. The saints would find themselves deep in their territory and faced with a 3rd and goal. Brees would call a screen and hit Thomas on a 6 yard screen pass and Thomas would bust threw some tackles and score to give the Saints a 14-10 lead.

The 2nd quarter would be all Saints as Standford seemed rattled and the Saints defense took control. Saints would get the ball back and score on a 35 yard fg with 48 seconds left before half, but neither team would be done before half time. Saints 17-10 lead.

Saints would get an int and Brees finds Henderson on a screen and Henderson takes it to the house for a 24-10 lead. Henderson had a huge game with 4 catches and 100+ yards and 2 tds.

Lions would get the ball back with 36 sec left before half and get a great few passes to get into field goal position and actually almost score. Lions would kick a 26 yard field goal to make the score 24-13 going into half.

After half both teams defenses would step it up and hold both offenses down. Saints would find Henderson on a post route as the Lions defender was ready for the pick and Henderson just ran in front, snatches the ball and scores on a 29 yard td catch. 31-13 Saints lead.

4th quarter would see the Lions break out a ton of wildcat which the saints did a ok job holding down. The Lions did break a few long ones and ran about 75-85% wildcat in the 4th quarter. Lions would score on a 10 yard run from Morris to make it 31-21 Saints.

Saints end up putting the game away late with a 9 yard pitch and catch from Brees to Colston to make it 38-21 Saints.

Lions would not stop and would continue to drive and pick up yards on the defense with their wildcat formations. Game would end with the Lions trying to punch it in from 3 yards out but the Saints defense would rise to the occasion and hold them out.

    Player of the game:

    Drew Brees
    17/24 288 yards and 4 tds
Brees picks up where he left off last season and throws 4 tds. If he can keep the INT's down then the Saints could be successful. Brees will need help in the running game and he got that today.

Next week the Saints travel to the Philly to face Bush and the Eagles. Should be a great game.

SAINTS DEFENSE HELPS BOUNCE TEAM BACK AGAINST BILLS
    Buffalo-NY
    Savage Mason Reporting

The New Orleans Saints (2-1) came into Buffalo (2-1) off of an embarrassing performance vs the Eagles last week. "They punched us in the face and we never responded" commented D. Brees on last weeks loss to the Eagles.

Things would get no easier or any better as the Saints came to visit the Bills with nasty weather and a nasty Bills defense.

Bills looked to be turned around this year, with a new and improved look, a fast strike offense, and a defense that was pushing people around and throwing qb's off with their blitzes. Saints QB Brees prepared himself for a long day on the ground, but he was ready. 'They are going to come after me and I am ok with that. I believe in our line and our wrs to make plays.'. Saints Coach Nate decided to start WR D. Henderson and WR Colston over other sets that they have recently tried due to Hendersons speed. 'We are going to make Henderson our #1 right now. We've tried making some moves recently and have not been able too. Henderson is a play maker and we will show that.'

The weather was horrible in Buffalo, just as the Saints had hoped that would not happen. Nasty weather + a blitzing Buffalo defense = a rough day for Saints offense.

Saints would put up the first points of the game with a 18 yard fieldgoal. The saints running game would be shut down pretty much all game long with saints rb's finding no open ground to run on. The buffalo Defense would step it up and hold NO out of the endzone on 3 straight plays. 3-0 Saints

Both teams would struggle getting their offenses going. Bills were blitzing and roughing Brees up while the Saints were mixing in blitzes and zone and some man to try and confuse Garcia. The tale of this game was Brees was able to get rolling while Garcia never found his rythm.

Garcia would throw his first int of the game late in the 2nd quarter after both teams traded punts back and forth.
    Highlight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHQRXa1-Syg

Brees and the Saints would make them pay after a great drive, Brees finds new TE Ingram on a 17 yard pass in the corner of the endzone for a td. 10-0 Saints.

NO would get the ball back with just a few mins left to play before half and again Brees would drop back and this time hit RB Westbrook on a 19 yard 3rd down completion for the td as Westbrook rumbled and ran over several Bills defenders for the score. 17-0 Saints.

After half Garcia would try and get things rolling as the Bills abandoned their running game fairly early on. Garcia would only find more saints defenders though, this time being picked off by OLB Boss Bailey.
    Highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQW2TFXzGVs

Saints would get a nice drive going but again the Bills defense was strong close to the endzone. Harley would be forced to kick, and make, a 24 yr field goal for a 20-0 Saints lead.

A few moments later Garcia again would find a Saints OLB, this time hitting Castilias for an INT.
    Highlight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fffUBXcjlfQ

Saints again would make the Bills pay, this time Brees would find WR D. Henderson on 18 yard td pass. 27-0 Saints.

Saints would get the ball back and score one last time towards the middle of the 4th quarter. With Westbrook simply trying to run the clock out, Saints K Hartley kicks a 27 yr fg for a 30-0 lead with a little over 4 mins to go in the game.

Bills would not quit though and Garcia would finally hit Owens on a 20 yr td pass to wrap up the scoring. 30-7 Saints

    Player of the game:
    Drew Brees
    21/27 266 yards and 3 tds
Brees would finally get back on track, even in the face of a driving rain and a blitzing Bills defense. Very few passes were bad and the Saints come through on Brees arm with a huge win against a very good Buffalo team.

Next week the Saints travel back home to face struggling Jets Team down home in the dome.

SAINTS SHAKE UP ROSTER WITH TRADE WITH CHIEFS
    New Orleans, LA
    Savage Mason Reporting

New Orleans Saints shook up their roster last night by making a late trade with the KC Chiefs.

    Saints send
    FS Sharper 87 ov
    WR Meacham 67 ov
    DT Clancy 69 ov

    Chiefs send
    DT Tank 67 ov
    WR Coles 86 ov
    FS Goldson 68 ov

Saints bring in an underrated DT in Tank and a faster veteran WR in Coles.
"We are excited about these changes. Of course we are saddened to see Meachem and Sharper Image leave our team, but we are excited."

Rumor has it that this move was made to make roster room for several other deals, one major blockbuster, that is in the works with the Ravens and the Browns.

More to come as it is released.

SAINTS ADD YOUNG PLAYMAKERS - TRADE WITH RAVENS
    [IMG]

    New Orleans, LA
    Savage Mason Reporting

New Orleans Saints added some young, speedy, talented lb's and cb to their roster by making a move with the Ravens today.

    Saints trade:
    Jonathon Vilma (87)
    Malcolm Jenkins (75)
    Lance Moore (81)

    Ravens Trade:
    Samari Rolle (75)
    Fabian Washington (77)
    Antwan Barnes (70)
    Tavares Gooden (66)

Coach Nate, who was an assistant with the Ravens before being hired with the Saints, has pursude a larger trade that both teams just couldn't come to terms on. 'All 4 of these guys were guys we really wanted to add to our team. By no means did we ever want to lose Vilma who at this point in the season is the OMFL Defensive MVP, but we really like what we have in Guyton and Barnes and Gooden will give us what we feel is a very very good and young lb corps. Washingtons ability to come in and use his speed to shut down one side of the field and rolles veteran playmaking ability really get us excited about our defense.'

More to come as it is released.

SAINTS ROLL OVER HAPLESS JETS FOR 2nd STRAIGHT VICTORY
    [IMG]
    New Orleans-LA
    Savage Mason Reporting

The New Orleans Saints (3-1) came back home to get ready for the NY Jets (0-4) after a shocking and dominate performance against the Buffalo Bills. "Things really went right for us last week. Just as many things that went wrong in Philly, that many things went right vs the Bills"-Coach Nate. Things looked to be getting better for the Saints with a struggling NY Jets team coming to town. This game would also mark the last game in a Saints uni for many of fan favorites, but it was also the mark of a new beginning for WR Coles who was picked up from the Chiefs this week. More on that later.

Jets are still trying to get their feet under them under new head coach Saintsdave. A young qb, some nice rbs and a defense that can really cause trouble, these Jets will be a team that contends really soon.

Saints on the other hand are finally rolling. GM Nate has had a tough time surrounding himself with the players that he needs to make a run after the OMFL Bowl. Saints would make a few more moves late this week and really are excited about their chances in the future.

Jets would win the toss and elect to defer to the 2nd half. Newly aquired Saints CB Miller has done an excellent job for head coach Nate after taking over for Reggie Bush who is now an Philly Eagle. Miller would take the opening kickoff back 96 yards for the opening td, first return for a td this season for the Saints and Miller. 7-0 Saints.
    Highlight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvbiHt6GrWY

On the very next drive the Jets would throw a pick to SS S. Jones who was acquired by the Saints from the Eagles in the Bush trade. Jones makes a great play and knows what to do with it as he returns it 74 yards for the td. Jones played an amazing game with 2 picks, a forced fumble, and 2 tds. Saints 14-0
    Highlight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJATsMP4PBI

Just 6:31 left in the 1st quarter the Jets found themselves down 14-0 to the Saints and were forced to get something going. Sanchez finds a open TE Keller for a great throw/catch to bring the score to 14-7 Saints. Keller would have a stellar day having 4 catches and 111 yards with 1 td.

That is how the 1st quarter came to an end but the 2nd quarter was all Saints as they finally started to get the game rolling on the Jets after a few great plays and retarded throws from Brees. Saints would score next in the game off a 1 yard dive from Westbrook. 21-7 Saints.

Late in the half the Jets would try to squeeze one in before halftime, but SS Jones would step in front of another one, spin move his way free and take it to the house from 104 yards out to make it 28-7 Saints and practically take all the air out of the wings of the Jets.

2nd Half was much of the same for the Saints and the Jets. Saints came out thowing the ball, wanting to put up one score from the offense and then take the starters out. Most of the starters were on the bench to begin with (players such as colston, ect) due to trades that had not been processed and Saints officals did not want to let anyone get injured. Saints Brees hits Henderson on a 54 yard pass and catch where Henderson just would not be denied. 35-7 Saints.
    Highlight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGJksFu55_U

After this play Saints coaching staff took out as many starters as possible, but still starters like Henderson had to play 3rd wr due to not enough players to fill all the slots.

NO would get the ball back after a punt and back up QB Shockley would find Henderson on a 9 yard route for another Saints TD. 42-7 Saints. Saints were trying to call off the dogs and take out as many starters as possible, but with the Jets not allowing me enough time in the pause screen I had to make due with what I had.

4th quarter would be Saints trying to run the clock out and the Jets never giving up. Big props to Saintsdave for a good attitude and never quitting on his team. Jets would punch it in on a 1 yard run from Sanchez late in the 4th to make it 42-14 and end the scoring on the game.

Jets would actually dominate in 1st downs (15/11), total offense (332/301) and TOP (19:18/12:42). Saints would get some nice breaks and get to a large lead early and then call off the dogs which messes some of these stats, but still a much closer game then the score shows.

    Player of the game:
    Sean Jones - SS
4 tackles, 1 forced fumble, and 2 ints for 2 tds.
Jones was a MONSTER today coming up with 2 ints for 2 tds, and a forced fumble which stopped another Jets drive. Because of these kinda of production the Saints feel very confident to kill a trade for Raves FS Reed and to stick with what they have.

Next week the Saints have a bye week and it comes at just the right time. Newly aquired WR Edwards, RB Peeriman, MLB Gooden, OLB Barnes, CB'S Washington and Rolle all will have time to learn the playbook and get ready for the NY G-Men in two weeks. The Saints feel they have sured up their back up rb slot, they have upgraded their wr positions, and have some of the youngest, fastest, up and coming lb's in the game. Players like Colston, Moore, Vilma, and Jenkins will be missed, but the Saints feel they can now make a run after a OMFL Bowl THIS YEAR!

Saints Break 3 game Losing streak vs Rams

SAINTS FINALLY PICK UP A WIN - BREAK 3 GAME LOSING STREAK
    [IMG]
    St. Louis
    Savage Mason Reporting

The New Orleans Saints (4-5) came to St. Louis to face a struggling St. Louis Rams (1-8) team with another new owner and a serious qb issue. Saints themselves have done nothing but struggled lately and this would be a game that was needed by both teams.

Saints would win the toss and defer to the 2nd half. Rams wouldn't do much their first drive and would be forced to punt. Saints would get things rolling with a nice mixture of a running game and passing game. Saints running game has been horrible and practically none existent this year, but they new this would be something to focus on vs the Rams. Saints would stall out on the 1/2 yard line and be forced to take the fg. Saints 3-0.

Saints would control pretty much the whole first half, but the Rams were hanging in there with some forced fumbles on the Saints. 2 nice saints drives were killed by fumbles that were lost to the Rams. Saints would kick another fg in the 2nd quarter to take a 6-0 lead.

As time would be expiring before half the Rams got a great drive going. On a 3rd down and goal call, Rams QB Quinn would be hit and Saints cb Rolle would pick it off and return it 102 yards for the game turning around td as nothing but zeros were left on the clock. Saints 13-0.
    Highlight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7c3Jd0VDSs

2nd half would be all saints from the get-go. Saints would take the opening drive and hit a huge trick play with a 54 yard flee flicker from Brees to Henderson. Henderson would make a great grab, break a tackle, dance the sideline, and a Rams Safety would take a bad angle and Henderson would find the endzone. After a 2 pt conversion Saints took a 21-0 lead.
    Highlight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjpO8L9AOV8

In comes Mark Buldger for the Rams and a nice drive developed. Rams would punch it in on a 2 yrd pass to Colston to get on the board. 21-7 Saints.

Saints would put it away though after a few nice runs by westbrook, who had a monster game of 20 plus carries and 140 plus yards, the saints would score on a 3 yard pass from brees to Edwards - his first as a saint. 28-7.

Saints would put the game away with some 4th down stops and some int's, but would elect to just kneel the ball away and punt the ball away and not score any more.

Late in the game Saints cb Washington would read a screen from Bulger and pick it off, but elect to just be tackled and call it a game.
    Highlight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw-KuL_MMMs

Saints picked up a much needed win and look to get their game back together and make a run for the OMFL Wildcard. Next week is another must win game as the Saints travel, again, to the Bucs for a divisional rival game.

    Player of the game:

    B. Westbrook- RB
    (EAWebsite is down for me)
Westbrook had a huge game with a td, a few catchs, and 20 plus runs for 140 plus yards. Westbrook has not had a good season and has also been getting hurt a ton (out of the game 3 times this game), but really had a great game today. We will need more of these to make a run for the OMFL Wildcard.

SAINTS WIN 2 IN A ROW - BEAT HOPELESS BUCS
    [IMG]
Tampa Bay - Savage Mason Reporting

The New Orleans Saints (5-5) came to St. Louis to face a struggling Tampa Bucs (1-9) team who was fighting for a win and fighting for respect.

Saints would win the toss and defer to the 2nd half. Bucs and Saints both wouldn't do too much, as the Bucs defense picked Brees off time and time again this game (a total of 5 times). Saints would strike first with a 14 yard td pass to Coles for a 7-0 lead.

Bucs would answer, but this time on defense, as Talib picks off Brees for a long pick 6 to make it 7-7.

Saints picked up where they left off on offense, as this time a great drive was ended with a 4 yard dive by westbrook. Westbrook had a amazing game for only the 2nd time this season going over 100 yards. 14-7 Saints

Saints defense would force a pick of their own on the next drive. Castillias who was benched and then brought back earlier this seasons takes it back to the house for a 21-7 lead.

Bucs would kick a fg as time expired to end the scoring for the half and make it 21-10 Saints.

In the 2nd half Saints brees would hook up with Henderson on a 47 yard flee flicker to bring the score to 28-10 saints in control.

Bucs would add a fg late in the 3rd to make it 28-13 and end the bucs scoring.

About mid-way through the 4th, J.Miller, one of the most explosive returners in the game and a great FA pick up for the saints, takes a punt back 66 yards for the score. 35-13 Saints.

Saints would tack on 10 more points with a Edwards td grab and a Harley kick. Saints owner/gm/coach Nate expressed in his post game interview that he did run up the score a little bit after being aggravated for playing the game 3 times due to owner complications.

Saints picked up a much needed win and look to get their game back together and make a run for the OMFL Wildcard. Next week is one of the toughest opponents yet for the Saints as they face the #2 Patriots at home on Monday Night Football.

    Player of the game:

    D. Henderson - WR
Henderson, one of the best wr's in the OMFL, would grab 10 catches or 124 and a td. Henderson is quietly having one of the best seasons in the OMFL, even after Saints front office tried to move him for a better wr. Henderson shows that he belongs in the talk of elite wrs in the OMFL.

SAINTS BEAT #2 RATED PATS 35 - 28 IN STUNNER
    [IMG]
New Orleans - Savage Mason Reporting

The New Orleans Saints (6-5) came back home after being on the road for the past few weeks to face a red hot New England Patriots (8-3) team who was trying to wrap up their playoff aspirations. One team was struggling while the other was rolling right along with their season. Over the past few weeks the Saints had gotten their running game going and their defense has finally started to jell. 'What i envisioned when making our moves on defense is finally coming together. We are finally starting to see the rb in westbrook that we thought we had traded for, and our wr's are some of the best in the league. We really feel good about our team, we just have struggled on all aspects and especially in close games this year.

The Saints would win the toss and elect to defer. Right away the Pats would test them and the Saints defense would answer the call early. One a 3rd down pass, Saints OLB Barnes steps in front and picks it off to set the Saints up in great field position. RB Westbrook would punch it in from 2 yards out, his first of 3 on the day. 7-0 Saints.

On the next drive the Pats looked, again, to get something going. This time Brady would throw into triple coverage and CB Washington would come down with it and return it 52 yards, putting a great move on Brady to get in the endzone and get the Saints out to an early 14-0 lead.

Brady would finally get things going though. On their next drive Welker stepped up to carry this team on his back. Welker hauled in a 76 yard td pass from brady to make it 14-7 Saints. Welker would prove to be a pain all day long for the Saints to cover.

New Orleans would answer the bell with a great drive of their own. This time capping it off with a Westbrook 3 yard dive to make it 21-7 Saints. Brees and Henderson finally got things going, but the Saints would really work hard on getting the running game going as well. This was Westbrooks 2nd of the day, and it was only the 1st quarter.

If the 1st quarter belonged to the Saints, then the 2nd and 3rd belonged to the Pats. Pats would come out on fire and blitzing the crap out of brees.

Pats would get two very deep drives in the 2nd half, while totally shutting down the Saints offense. Saints defense would answer the call though, and as a group was the difference in the game. Saints held both of the Pats long drives to just fgs to make it 21-13 at half.

Saints offense just died after the first quarter as the Pats very aggressive defense caused havoc for brees all day long. The only scoring in the 3rd quarter was from the Pats Taylor who broke a long 51 yard td romp to make it 21-21 after a 2 pt conversion. The tide had turned and the Saints were left thinking 'not again' and 'what if'. this was the game that would have ended the saints bleak playoff hopes.

towards the end of the 3rd the pats get the ball back. On a 3rd down call Saints sniff out a screen to Welker, but Welker breaks 3 tackles and takes it to the house to start the 4th quarter with a 42 yard td pass. 28-21 Pats.

Lucky for the Saints this would ignite the team, and wake the sleeping stagnant saints offense up.

saints would answer with a great drive of their own, getting westbrook and brees rolling again. This drive was capped off with a 5 yard run from westbrook to give him his 3rd and last td of the day. 28-28 ball game.

Saints defense would get another pick of brady, making it 4 on the day. This time the saints would make the pats pay as henderson takes his own screen play 19 yards for the score and leave just over 2 mins in the game to play. 35-28 Saints.

Pats would get the ball and begin their long trek to the endzone. Pass after pass, brady was just chipping away at the saints defense. On a 3rd and goal with just 15 seconds left in the game, brady would call a post out from his te in the back of the endzone. Ex-Pats MLB Guyton would sniff the play out and step in front of the pass and pick it off in the back of the endzone.

    BALL GAME!

Saints would pull off a very unexpected win of the mighty pats, 35 - 28!

    Here is the scoring recap:
    First Quarter
    (NO) B.Westbrook, 2 Yd run(G.Hartley kick), 5:44
    (NO) F.Washington, returned interception 52 Yds(G.Hartley kick), 4:14
    (NE) W.Welker 76 Yd pass from T.Brady(S.Gostkowski kick), 3:45
    (NO) B.Westbrook, 3 Yd run(G.Hartley kick), 1:03
    Second Quarter
    (NE) S.Gostkowski, 41 Yd FG, 5:53
    (NE) S.Gostkowski, 40 Yd FG, 0:52
    Third Quarter
    (NE) F.Taylor, 51 Yd run(2pt), 2:09
    Fourth Quarter
    (NE) W.Welker 42 Yd pass from T.Brady(S.Gostkowski kick), 7:49
    (NO) B.Westbrook, 5 Yd run(G.Hartley kick), 6:38
    (NO) D.Henderson 19 Yd pass from D.Brees(G.Hartley kick), 2:38

Saints picked up a HUGE win vs a extremely strong Pats team. Next week the task doesnt get any easier as the Saints travel to the Redskins for a huge matchup of two teams struggling to keep OMFLPlayoff hopes alive!

Even though all the saints defense was given a game ball, westbrook proved to be the difference maker with 3 tds. Westbrook ended the day with only 14 carries, but a huge 78 yards.

SAINTS TAKE DOWN REDSKINS TO STAY IN PLAYOFF HUNT
    [IMG]
Washington Redskins - Savage Mason Reporting

(Due to my busy schedule lately this is an abbreviated version)

Saints came into Washington rolling off of 4 straight wins and were looking to get to 2 games above .500 and stay in the OMFL Playoff hunt.

Both defenses played well but the Saints offense really controlled this game. Mainly due to the running of Westbrook. D. Henderson also had a great game with 8 catches for 134 and a td. Redskins did get a few turnovers themselves, but Washington was very stagnant on offense all game long.

    Here is the scoring recap:
    First Quarter
    (NO) B.Westbrook, 3 Yd run(G.Hartley kick), 4:21
    (WAS) J.Kasay, 24 Yd FG, 3:17
    Second Quarter
    (NO) D.Henderson 70 Yd pass from D.Brees(G.Hartley kick), 1:40
    Fourth Quarter
    (NO) G.Hartley, 30 Yd FG, 4:19

Saints picked up a good victory on the road, but their next 4 games will be the toughest all season, and will make or break their year.

25 carries 141 yards and a td. Saints didn't light up the scoreboard but that was basically because they controlled the ball all game long, and westbrook was the reason for that. Westbrook has really became a force in the past 4 games (all wins for the Saints) and he looks to keep things rolling and keep the Saints playoff hopes alive.

Tampa Offense Lacking in Saints Rout

New Orleans QB Drew Brees shrugs at coaches after a Brian Westbrook touchdown run against the Bucs this Sunday.

    by Antoine Buckman
    Blogger, Tampa Tribune

Good news for Tampa Bay fans (the three that are left): the Buccaneers defense is solid and can hold their own against any team in the OMFL. The bad news: their offense could not score against a high school defense right now. The proof is in the score of the Saints/Bucs game: 24-6.

Both teams' defenses showed up to play in this game. The Buccaneers got the first points of the game on a Mike Nugent field goal midway through the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead, a lead that would stand up thanks to stout defense on Tampa's part to keep the vaunted New Orleans offense off track.

"We targeted (New Orleans wide receiver Devery) Henderson a good bit with our zone coverage schemes, keeping 2 guys in that area at all times," Coach Winuvas said after the game. "We wanted him contained to keep New Orleans from breaking the big play. He still got his touches, though."

Devery Henderson caught six balls for 72 yards and a touchdown, that touchdown coming in the second quarter late to give the Saints a 7-3 lead going into the half.

However, like most of Coach Winuvas' games in Tampa orange, the second half brought no adjustments on offense, and a tired defense could not keep up with the Saints. An 85 yard breakout run by Saints running back Brian Westbrook on the first play from scrimmage in the second half made it 14-3, and with the Buccaneer offense showing no life, the game was over at that point for the most part. A Mike Nugent field goal late in the third quarter got it to 14-6, which is as close as Tampa would get. Two late Garrett Hartley field goals and a interception return for a touchdown by cornerback Fabian Washington sealed the deal for the Saints.

Josh Freeman was anemic and looked timid on the field, completing only 11 of 25 passes for 92 yards and one interception. Derrick Ward worked hard for his 94 yards on 20 carries against one of the best defenses in the OMFL. Jerry Porter was the lead receiver for Tampa, getting 3 catches for 35 yards. Linebacker Quincy Black led the defensive effort with 6 tackles, and defensive tackle Chris Hovan had the team's only sack of Brees on the day.

"We could not get consistent pressure on (New Orleans quarterback Drew) Brees, and he made us pay for that," Coach Winuvas said of his defensive effort.

Brees was efficient and accurate, completing 13 of 19 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. Brian Westbrook carried 15 times for 149 yards, but other than the 85 yard breakout run was contained well by Tampa Bay's defensive scheme. Other than Devery Henderson, no other receiver stood out, with only 1 other receiver catching 2 passes of 8 receivers catching a pass (Brian Westbrook had 2 catches).

"We have to go to the drawing board on offense. I'll be working hard on that during practices this week. I plan on working a scout team against the offense, and giving most of our defensive starters a breather in practice," Coach Winuvas commented after the game. "To be frank, we are playing (expletive) right now, and it shows. Hopefully we can summon up some quality offensive play against Atlanta and give him a game."

Coach Winuvas also talked about draft plans with what will almost certainly be a top ten pick.

"We have lots of needs to fill, to be honest," he said. "(General manager) Mark (Dominik) and I have some ideas on what we are looking at. We're discussing what we want to do in year 2, and I can't comment much further on it until we sit down after the season and evaluate our personnel and see where we need to get younger and more talented."

Coach Winuvas sounds like he has no answers on offense right now, and it shows. Will he figure it out in time to beat Atlanta a second time this year, or will he be content with working towards next year?

SAINTS FINISH SEASON ON 2 GAME WINING STREAK - FINISH 9-7 & OUT OF THE PLAYOFFS
    [IMG]
    Carolina - Savage Mason Reporting

New Orleans rolled into Carolina to finish off their season and try to end on a high note and end with a winning record. Carolina had already decided to sit their QB Delhomme and New Orleans was looking to let everyone finish the season on a high note.

The game was a bit of a downer with Saints defense picking off Carolina most of the 1st half and Brees jumping out to a quick 21-0 lead. Saints sat Brees and the game was ho'hum the rest of the way. Carolina didn't look to want to win or try to win and there wasn't anything exciting to speak about. NO Saints CB Brown who got a start several weeks back, played very well as the Saints are looking to keep him as a starter next year.

Here are some highlights from the game:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1cdLMSND3A (F. Washington INT #2)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZGa4nAuyrU (Brees to Ingram TD)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17VZBGzz1UAn(Brees to Cole TD)

    Here is the scoring recap:
    First Quarter
    -(NO) L.Coles 49 Yd pass from D.Brees(G.Hartley kick), 6:21
    -(NO) C.Ingram 14 Yd pass from D.Brees(G.Hartley kick), 4:41
    -(NO) D.Henderson 13 Yd pass from D.Brees(G.Hartley kick), 3:16

    Second Quarter
    -(CAR) R.Lloyd, 51 Yd FG, 4:08
    -(NO) G.Hartley, 35 Yd FG, 1:25

    Third Quarter
    -(CAR) D.Williams, 4 Yd run(R.Lloyd kick), 2:36

    Fourth Quarter
    -(NO) G.Hartley, 47 Yd FG, 2:09

Saints end the season on a 2 game winning streak and end with a 9-7 record. Off to the offseason as the saints look to make just a hand full of moves to bring in a possible 3rd wr, a lb or two, possibly some olinemen and dlinemen.

Washington has been nothing but splendid since coming over to NO. Washington ended the season with 9 picks and several pick 6's. Look for Washington to anchor down a very good defensive unit next year for NO.
