    Off-Season News
Penn State took a bit of a hit when Jr. QB Kenneth Johnson announced that he was entering the NFL Draft.
"I feel as though I have accomplished everything that I could during my time in Happy Valley. Coach Fleming called to discuss my decision, but in the end he was fully supportive of me. He just wished me luck and told me to keep in contact."
Also leaving Happy Valley is Jr CB Anthony Moore.
Not only was Moore the #1 CB for PSU, he was also a more than capable KR/PR.
"When Coach called me, he flat out told me 'Son, go to the NFL, we'll miss you but the NFL is calling your name.' How could I argue? I will always be a Nittany Lion."
Luckily though PSU received some good news from two of their draft eligble players. Jr OLB Tony Anderson and Jr DE Rodney Hamilton have announced that they will return for their Sr years.
    [IMG][IMG]
PSU fans are hopeful that Hamilton and Anderson will help to anchor a Penn State defense that really turned it around in the second half of the season.

    New Season, Lofty Expectations
    [IMG]
Fall is in the air, the leaves are turning and the air is crisp. What does that mean??? It is time for a new season of Penn State Football to overtake Happy Valley.
With the departure of All American QB Kenneth Johnson to the NFL Draft last season, the Nittany Lions will open this season with a new QB under center. During spring practice 2 quarterbacks were vying for the top spot on the depth chart.
Neither QB took control during the spring, but rumor has it that Brown will get the starting nod against Rutgers in the Season Opener. Penn State's season will largely be tied directly to how the QB situation plays itself out.
PSU WR's are set in stone lead by 2 Juniors, Darrell Johnson and Cole Bowen.
Bowen had a breakout season in 2015 setting a new school record for receiving yards in a season. The two WR's are expected to help mentor the Redshirt WR's this year.
Coming back in the backfield is starting HB Andrew Clayton
    [IMG]
Clayton stole the starting RB job in 2015 from Brad Cameron who was the favorite going into last year's camp. Even with missing 3 games due to injury, Clayton rushed for over 1,000 yards. Clayton ended 2015 and started 2016 on a high note, scoring on a 96 yard TD run in the Outback Bowl against the Crimson Tide from Alabama.

The offensive line took a few hits due to graduation. While there may not be too many All Americans on the O-Line, they are more than capable of handling the task at hand.
Keys to offensive success for PSU
    1) The play of the QB's
    2) Clayton's continued success
    3) O-Line protection/keeping healthy
    4) Continued development of the WR corps
Tomorrow we will take a look at Defense and Special Teams

    Defense Preview
The Nittany Lions know that more than likely, they will only go as far as their defense will take them. With PSU starting a QB who is wet behind the ears, the defense may have their work cut out for them.
Two Seniors anchor the defensive line in DE Rodney Hamilton and DT Anthony Wolfe. Hamilton looked as if he was headed to the NFL draft, but decided at the last minute to return to State College for his Senior season.
The Linebacker U tradition is in great hands with this corps of LBs. So much so that highly touted MLB recruit James McCoy has been redshirted for his freshman year. Leading the linebackers are Senior MLB Xavier Young and Senior OLB Tony Anderson. Both were in the Top 10 last year in tackles in the country and hope to continue that success.
The defensive backfield is lead by Senior CB Chad Johnson (no not that Chad Johnson). With Antony Moore leaving for the NFL draft in the offseason, Johnson knows that he needs to step his game up. He thrived last year as the #2 CB, and is looking forward to the starting role this season.
The specialists (K/P) is in good hands with Jr Kicker Kirk Reddick and Redshirt Sophomore Punter David Temple.
    PSU's keys to defensive success:
    1) Defensive Line pressure
    2) LB corps continued sure tackling
    3) DBs creating more turnovers.
All in all it is looking like a successful season for Penn State. Fans are clamoring for a B1G title with a trip to a BCS Bowl.

    Recruiting News
Penn State received 2 high profile commitments this week, securing the services of a :5stars: RB and a :4stars: QB, both were [IMG] top prospects.
    Coach Loaf's take:
We are very excited to have Austin wrap up his recruiting process early. Austin will come into camp next season with the opportunity to start. We have also left the door open for a possible redshirt, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.
We absolutely love his down hill running style and we feel as though he will fit in with the PSU way of life.
Welcome to Happy Valley Austin, enjoy your Senior year of high school.
    Coach Loaf's take:
John is an exciting prospect. We have discussed the fact that John will probably redshirt next year in order to learn our offense, but nothing is impossible. We are very happy that John picked us out of just about every other school in the nation.
Welcome to Happy Valley John, enjoy your Senior year

That D-line is nasty, and with 2 90+ guys as linebackers, it's going to be tough to run on Penn State.

    Hamilton celebrates a sack
    [IMG]
Penn State's defense carried them to victory as the offense could only muster one big play. It was a rainy ugly day in Washington as both teams suffered through the same environment. WSU took a 6-0 lead into halftime, but the tide would soon change.
On a 3rd and short for WSU, the Cougars attempted a short pass, but SR CB Chad Johnson stepped in front of the pass and returned to for a TD for PSU's first lead of the day 7-6.
The rest of the 3rd quarter was dominated by noth defenses shutting down the offenses.
Halfway through the 4th, PSU RB Andrew Clayton broke through the Cougar line for a 52 yd TD to close out the scoring. PSU DE Rodney Hamilton paced the defense and was named player of the game with 5 tackles, 2 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles.
Johnson steps in front of this pass on his way for a 29-yd TD

Penn State improves to 2-0 and is home next week to in state rival Temple.

Temple was no match for Penn State on Saturday. Penn State was pumped up from a huge home crowd ready for a rivalry game. The game was almost over by halftime.
Coach Loaf was pleased with all 3 facets of his team's play. "We made a lot of 'splash' plays today. When you score in all 4 phases of the game, you're doing something right." Coach was referring to his defense coming through with 2 INT returns for TDs and a Kickoff retun for a TD.
The Johnson brothers, Darrell and Chad lead the way on offense and defense/special teams, respectively.
Darrell Johnson the WR had 2 big plays, a 67 yd end around for a TD and a 46 yd TD rec.
Chad Johnson the DB/KR had a 30 yd INT TD and a 90 yd KO return TD.
MLB Xavier Young lead the team in tackles as usual, but also chipped in a spectacular INT.

Penn State snagged a major recruit this week when :5stars: WR John Jacques signed for the Nittany Lions
    [IMG]
    Coach Loaf's statement on John:
"We are extremely excited that John decided to end the recruitng process fairly early and decided to come to Happy Valley. John's speed will be his biggest assest. Depending on how he comes into fall camp, he will have a chance to compete for a starting position. We are very deep at the WR position, but he helps us immensly. Welcome to State College and have fun in the rest of your Senior Year, go out and win the Quad-A NY State Championship.
Penn State is hosting 6 potential recruits for this Saturday's Rivalry game vs Pitt. Hopefully a few of these recruits will sign also.

Penn State played host to in-state rival #11 Pittsburgh on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The Panthers had one thing on their mind.... Upset. It didn't look good for the home faithful as PSU trailed 17-7 after the 1st quarter.
The Nittany Lion defense seemed to kick into high gear and posted a shutout for the rest of the game, while the offense was able to rack up 400+ yards against the previously undefeated Panthers.
"After the 1st, Coach Loaf called the defense aside and ripped us a new one" said defensive co-captain OLB Tony Anderson. Anderson continued... "Our fans also really pumped us up. There is nothing like hearing a 100,000+ fans chanting 'We Are' and jumping up and down for Zombie Nation. They played as big a role as anyone on the team."
Starting RB Andrew Clayton was named player of the game, thanks in large part to his 53 yard TD run. "The O-Line really blocked eveything in their path, all I did was run. My grandmother could have scored on that play."
Penn State hosted close to a half of a dozen recruits this week. "Hopefully that experience and our play will convince these young men that State College is the perfect place for them to furhter their education." said Coach Loaf
Penn State will open up B1G play next week when Indiana travels to Happy Valley

The Nittany Lions made a big splash this week on the recruiting trail. 3 recruits signed on the dotted line after their visit to Happy Valley to watch the Nittany Lions beat In-State Rival Pittsburgh.
    [IMG][IMG]
Coach Loaf's take: "We feel as though we just signed our bookend Tackles for the next 4 years in these 2 :4stars: recruits. Marcus projects as a LT while we are looking at Lamar as a RT, but that could change. Both young men will have the opportunity to earn the starting OT positions"
Coach Loaf's take: "Sean is a young man that we have been following since his Jr year of high school. Not only can he play the run well, but he can also get after the QB as needed. We have discussed the possibility of a Red Shirt with Sean, but I will never deny a kid a chance to compete."
Rivals.com is also reporting that the other 3 recruits that visited State College are close to signing with PSU. The Nittany Lion class is really starting to take shape

I put five hours into Manning. I was hoping he'd just soft commit so I could steal him in week 6.

I knew that his visit in week 5 was all or nothing. I think if he went on a visit to South Bend, he wouldn't have came back. He was pretty much my number 1 target all year. When you led for a week, I was worried.

Chad Johnson with his team leading 4th INT
The defense set up the offense all game with great field position. When you give the Nittany Lions offense a short field, usually good things happen. Starting RB Andrew Clayton rushed for 3 TDs while his cack-up Reggie Thomas had one as well.
The defense was led by Red Shirt Soph DT Kenny Irvin who had 4 sacks on the day.
The defensive backfield didn't want to be out done, scoring 2 INT return TDs, 1 each by Chad Johnson and Jamie Witherspoon.
Penn State improves to 5-0 (1-0) on the season and is idle next week.

Penn State received some good news and bad news on the recruiting front this morning.
Marques Gilmore committed to the Nittany Lions while PSU lost out on a 4 star SS prospect (ND) and a 4 star Center (Nevada).
    Coach Loaf's take:
"We want kids who WANT to be here. We do not have time to worry about the small things. We are overjoyed that Marques chose us over the like of Auburn, especially since he is from Alabama. We wish the other young men well."

Penn State hosted the 6-0 Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday afternoon in a matchup of the #2 and #3 teams in the nation. The game was being hyped all week and it didn't disappoint.
After a scoreless 1st Quarter, the Badgers jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead over PSU with TD runs of 36 and 35 yards for Badger HB Chaz Hall. PSU did not lay down though and clawed back. The Nittany Lions drove on the next possession and QB Jon Brown found TE Bruce Campbell for a 9 yard TD reception to make it 14-7. After the teams exchanged 4 and outs, Wisconsin looked to be driving to put another TD in before the half, but Senior MLB Xavier Young had another idea, picking off a pass intended for the Badger TE and returning it 73 yards for the score and a tied game at 14 all.
MLB Xavier Young picks the pass off and returns it 73 yards for a TD
The teams exchanged 5 yard TD runs in the 3rd quarter to stay tied at 21 each. PSU put together a long drive to start the 4th quarter and PSU HB put the Nittany Lions on top for good with another 5 yard TD run. PSU added a key 33 yard FG to make it a 10 point game which ended up being the final score 31-21 PSU.
Penn State improves to 6-0 (2-0 B1G) and extends their winning streak to 11 games.

The #1 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions traveled to Champaign to take on the Fighting Illini in a B1G showdown. The Illini had upset on their minds and while they held a 10-7 lead in the 2nd quarter, PSU pulled away and never looked back putting up 52 points on the Illinois defense.
The tide of the game changed in a matter of 2 plays in the 2nd quarter. Mike Godfrey, the Illini starting QB was injured while scrambling trying to extend a play. On the very next play, back-up QB Billy Caldwell threw a deep pass that was picked off by PSU CB Jamie Witherspoon and returned it 63 yards for the TD and a 21-10 Nittany Lion lead at the half.

The 3rd quarter was all Penn State as they put up 4 TDs to put the game away. The back-ups were put in and received some valuable playing time.
The Nittany Lions improve to 7-0 (3-0) and will host 2 HUGE rivals in the next 2 weeks. First the #6 Wolverines of Michigan travel to Happy Valley, while the #2 Ohio State Buckeyes visit the next week

PSU looked to bounce back after losing a heartbreaker last week to Michigan. As if dropping from #1 to #5 wasn't bad enough, the Nittany Lions host the new #1 team, The Ohio State Buckeyes
    [IMG]
Penn State started the game about as well as they could have wished. The Nittany Lion running game led the way on the opening drive. Penn State took a 7-0 lead on a short TD pass to Jake Manning.
On the first OSU drive, the Buckeyes were moving the ball when PSU MLB Xavier Young stepped in front of a Buckeye and picked off the pass. The PSU offense sputtered and had to settle for a FG and a
    10-0 lead.
The two teams were mired in a defensive battle for the rest of the game. The Buckeyes got on the board with 1 minute left in the game for a 10-7 PSU lead.
The game came down to the following onisde kick, which did not travel the required 10 yards and Penn State took over with 56 seconds left. Penn State was able to pick up a 1st down and killed the clock in the victory formation.
Penn State improves to 8-1 (4-1 in B1G) and travels to Northwestern next week.

Penn State continues it's march to the B1G Title game, but that doesn't mean that it is going to be easy. Purdue had upset on it's agenda and played their hearts out.
Purdue ran a no-huddle offense all night. Their first drive of the game resulted in a TD. Penn State was held to a FG on their first drive, but after that it was all Nittany Lions until the Boilermakers added some scores on PSU's 2nd stringers.

The Nittany Lions arrived in Indianapolis with a little chip on their shoulders. Not only did the Wolverines ruin the Lions perfect season on a controversial call in their last meeting, the Media recently dropped PSU in their recent poll, which bumped the Nittany Lions to #3 in the BCS rankings. With a win, PSU is hoping for a shot to play for the BCS National Championship.
The Wolverines were playing without their coach for this huge tilt.
Penn State started out strong, building a 14-0 lead, but that was soon wiped out and Michigan tied the game at 14.
At the half, PSU led 27-21 in this back and forth game.
Penn State scored the only TD of the third quarter, but Coach Loaf made the call to go for 2pts. The pass fell incomplete and the Lions led 33-21. Michigan scored in the 4th to cut the lead to 33-28. On PSU's next possession, they were held to a 3 and out and were forced to punt to Michigan with less than 4 minutes in the game.
The Wolverine's were moving the ball, but a huge hit caused a fumble which allowed PSU to run out the clock and capture Coach Loaf's first B1G title.
