The Lions took a long look at their Salary situation and realized that if they wanted to keep their defensive line intact they needed to make a hard choice. The Rams front office has been shopping their top 5 pick for some time. After all of the negotiating was done, it shook out as follows: The Rams acquire Calvin Johnson, aka Megatron The Lions get the Rams first and third round picks this year and their first next year. For the Rams, this deal takes their receiving corps from very average to exceptional. Being able to move Kenny Britt to the #2 WR job with Tavon Austin in the slot and have Jared Cook at TE looks deadly, if the Rams can just find someone to throw these guys the ball. The loss of picks is a little curious given that the team literally has no quarterbacks on the roster at all, but apparently the coaching staff feels confident that they can pull a vet off of the scrap heap and make it work. For the Lions, they free up salary space to keep their other stars. Also, while none of the players they draft is likely to be the caliber of Johnson, two firsts and a third should add good pieces to develop and support the remaining core of players in Detroit.
