FSU Brings the BCS back to Tallahassee
It wasn't a pretty game by any but it doesn't matter to Seminole fans as FSU won a defensive battle in Miami tonight for the school's first National Championship since 1999. Florida State was led once again by its defense and its superstar running back Chris Thompson who had the go ahead touchdown in the 3rd quarter.
Georgia won the opening toss and elected to defer. Thompson who has done everything for the team this year took back the opening to the 45 yard line. After a Thompson run and a screen pass to WR Willie Haulstead, FSU was inside the Bulldog 5 yard line and looked likely to score. However the Dawgs defense had other plans and shut the Seminoles down 3 consecutive times. Dustin Hopkins came onto kick a 24 yard field goal to give Florida State a 3-0 lead. In the closing moments of the quarter Georgia had a great drive of their own and unlike the Seminoles they were able to score a touchdown in the redzone when FB Zander Ogletree scored from a yard out on 3rd down to take a 7-3 lead heading into the 2nd.
On the ensuing possession Florida State managed to get down the field once again inside the Georgia 10 but once again the tough Georgia defense held FSU to a field goal this time a 26 yarder from Hopkins to cut the lead to 7-6. The defenses of both teams held strong for the rest of the quarter until UGA struck once again in the closing seconds of the half when Thomas Barr hit a 42 field goal as time expired.
With their first offensive drive of the 2nd half, Georgia looked to add to their 10-6 lead and brought the ball to the Florida State 28. Here Aaron Murray would make his biggest mistake of the game, overthrowing his target into the waiting hands of SS Karlos Williams. Nothing came of the FSU possession and they were forced to punt once again.
The Williams interception seemed to awaken the Seminole defense and they started to smother the Bulldog offense. RE Bjoern Werner seemed to be everywhere putting pressure on Murray, stopping the Georgia running backs and even sniffing out a screen play for a loss. Werner finished with 7 total tackles including 4 tackle for losses and 2 sacks. The defense was the only thing keeping the Seminoles in the game as the offense floundered.
Then with 1:09 left in the 3rd quarter came the big play Seminole fans had been waiting for. Thompson took the handoff, bounced outside and outran the Georgia defense 66 yards for the touchdown giving FSU the 13-10 lead. It was the biggest run in Thompson's career and capped off a magical season where he had 22 touchdowns while setting the school's single season rushing record.
The rest of the game went back to being a defensive struggle with neither team giving an inch to the opponent's offense. With under 4 minutes remaining Georgia went for 4th down on their own 35 and failed to convert giving the Seminoles an excellent opportunity to extend the lead to at least 6. However a holding call on first down pushed the team out of field goal range. FSU decided to try to put the game out of reach by scoring a touchdown doing deep to Willie Haulstead twice but both times the ball was knocked down as a result of excellent plays by the Georgia secondary.
UGA QB Aaron Murray and the offense had one last gasp to either take tie or take the lead but once again the Seminole defense held with stalwart DT Everett Dawkins sacking Murray on 3rd and 4th downs to clinch the victory. Dawkins was a monster inside for the Seminoles and finished the game with 4 sacks.
Florida State road defending the national championship will be difficult next year as key players such as Thompson and Dawkins will be graduating but the coaching staff and returning players will be up to the challenge.
    FSU Key Players
RB Chris Thompson 13 Carries 110 Yards 1 TD; 1 Reception 29 Yards
DT Everett Dawkins 5 Total Tackles 4 TFL 4 Sacks
RE Bjoern Werner 7 Total Tackles 4 TFL 2 Sacks
    GG Bulldog

    #5 Kansas 34
    Ole Miss 12

Kansas overcame a slow start, and by benching QB Mike Cummings, they were able to beat Ole Miss easily. Brock Bergulnd looked good passing the ball and he is in the QB circle for next year. Kansas doesn’t have a frontrunner but it will either be Berglund, Cummings, or Webb starting. HB James Sims scored twice, and Kansas fans are praying he will come back for his senior season. Kansas was very disappointed to miss out on a BCS Bowl but the #5 record and a 13-1 record please the fans.

Brock Berglund (QB)- 10-13 for 219 yards, 2 TD, 10 rush yards
James Sims (HB)- 20 carries for 91 yards, 2 TD
DJ Beshears (WR)- 4 receptions for 106 yards
Darius Willis (MLB)- 7 tackles, 3 TFL, INT

Clemson blows opportunity in loss to Wisco

After somehow climbing to the #4 ranking, Wisco handled the Tigers in every way and won easily. Clemson was hoping a BCS bowl win might get them a 6th star, but it looks like they'll still be at 5 for next season
