BYRD IS THE WORDMarlon Byrd is the hero as his two clutch hits lead the Cubs to 6-2 W in 11 inningsRecap:The Cubs and the Tigers went at it tooth and nail in the play-in game in the 1st inaugural TBL Spring Tournament. Justin Verlander took the bump for Detroit and the Cubs countered with newly acquired Matt Garza. Both pitchers delivered, and the game was a pitching clinic from the start. Garza started off retiring the Tigers first 16 batters until surrendering a double to Jhonny Peralta with 1 out in the 6th inning. He went on to finish the game pitching 6 and 2/3rd's innings surrendering 2 runs on 2 hits. Verlander pitched into the 9th, where he found himself within 1 strike of his first shutout of 2011. With Kosuke Fukudome at 1st with 2 outs, Marlon Byrd was up to bat and down 0-2 in the count. Byrd said later he was looking for the 0-2 curve in the dirt, and while the pitch was a curve Verlander placed it high and very inside. Byrd describes the pitch;"I just adjusted while the pitch was in the air and still kept my timing. got the ball on the barrel of the bat and the ball got out pretty quick. That is a great way to start the spring." Two innings later in the 11th after the Cubs bullpen kept the Tigers potent offense at bay Byrd found himself up again, only this time in a better position to succeed. Blake DeWitt and Kosuke Fukudome were both on base and there was only 1 out. Byrd came up huge what again, hitting a 2 RBI double that ended up being the game winning hit. Aramis Ramirez would add a 2-run shot in the 11th also as the Cubs offense finally busted out. Carlos Marmol came out in the bottom of the 11th and got the Tigers out 1-2-3.Good game Smooth and good luck the rest of the year!

Big Z puts Yankees Bats to SleepCubs advance to second round with 2-0 W over New YorkRecap:Not much to say here besides it was an absolute battle. The Yankees threw Phil Hughes up against Carlos Zambrano and it was on. Hughes kept the Cubs scoreless until ARAM pulled a changeup deep to right field for a solo shot to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead, and that was all Zambrano needed. Marlon Byrd continued to hit the ball hard this spring with an RBI double as the Cubs rode Big Z to a 2-0 victory over New York. Zambrano finished with a complete game 3 hitter.

ARAMazing Aramis Ramirez goes deep twice to push Cubs to next roundRecap:Another close game against a great team, another victory for the Cubs. This might be spring training, but for the fans of the Chicago Cubs and the players this early, early season run is a confidence builder for a team many never gave a shot when breaking down the NL Central this winter. Aramis Ramirez went deep twice, including a walk-off 10th inning homerun off Scott Proctor and the Cubs advanced to the final four of the tournament.Cubs Manager Mike Quade broke down the teams Spring tournament results so far. "We are playing to show the rest of the league we won't be a doormat this season. We are going to play hard and give anyone a run for their money. We might not be the most talented or the best, but I think our desire to win will bring good things this summer."
